London 1558. An orphan from a far-off land is renamed “Noah Ames,” and given every advantage the English Crown can bestow. London 1592. Now an experienced barrister, Noah witnesses what appears to be a botched robbery outside the Rose Theater, a crime he soon suspects to be part of a plot against Queen Elizabeth herself. Steadfast in his loyalty to the Queen, Noah must use every bit of his knowledge and skill to lure her most disloyal subject onto the only battlefield where Noah has the advantage ... a court of law – though in doing so he risks public exposure of his darkest secret, a secret so shocking that its revelation could cost him everything: the love of the only woman who can offer him happiness, his livelihood ... even his life.

A Spellbinding Cliffhanger By Babette The Golden Age of the English Renaissance, the “Elizabethan Era,” provides the rich historical context for Neal Roberts’ extraordinary debut novel, A Second Daniel (In the Den of the English Lion, Book I). Roberts’ protagonist Noah Ames emerges from humble beginnings to become a seasoned barrister at the Queen’s Bench in London. Though he masters the finer nuances of English criminal law, and engages in the fertile world of Elizabethan poetry, literature, music and theater, Noah’s life is always balancing on a precarious razor’s edge.Hoping to contain a closely guarded secret about his origins, Noah endeavors to maintain a low profile. However, when he witnesses a murder one evening outside of the Rose Theater, and believes that the Queen’s life may be in peril, he is drawn into a subterranean world of plots and political conspiracies, often involving the highest levels of Elizabethan society. Think William Cecil, (Lord Burghley), the Queen’s advisor, or the duplicitous Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex, or the Queen’s trusted and cunning spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham. Cliffhanger tension is built throughout the plot as we dread the possibility that Noah’s new enemies at Court may discover his true identity, or that his dark secret might undermine his burgeoning love interest.Roberts’ exhaustive research is clearly evident as we are drawn into his authentic Elizabethan world richly detailed with nuanced depictions of the era’s clothing, furniture, bubonic plague outbreaks, appalling legal protocol at the Queen’s Bench, a putative plot to poison the Queen, grim reminders of the Tower of London’s bloody history, and boisterous English tavern ditties that ring into the evening air.For anyone who delights in Shakespearean literature, be prepared for ingenious allusions to many of the Bard’s plays. Spoiler: If you enjoy Shakespeare’s use of malapropist constables, prepare to encounter a hilarious one here.Whatever your subjective reading of A Second Daniel, you are sure to discover Neal Roberts to be a highly gifted wordsmith, a wizard who spins a spellbinding cliffhanger with masterful control of historical detail.Babette October 7, 2015

Excellent By Cschwindt87 This story is about a young boy, born into Jewish decent, and orphaned during a time when England had a low tolerance for Jews. He catches the eye of the Queen and offered a life not normally given to his kind. Given a new Christian identity and a paid education, he has finally made a name for himself. He is tasked with a case that could destroy his entire life if he fails. The Author has a vast knowledge of legal affairs and politics of the era. Overall a great book to read! Expect some well known characters to appear in this story.

It is the story of a Jewish man that caught the eye Queen Elizabeth and won her favor as a child. He is now an adult, and through the favor of the queen was given an education to become a lawyer. The story follows him through the twists and turns of the Elizabethan justice system, and into the world of court intrigue and politics. Even though there is, at times, a lot of legal detail given you never get bored with the story. It keeps moving and has so many delightful twists and turns. I had a hard time putting it down. My only complaint about the novel is that it had to end. I can not wait for the squeal! A definite recommendation for anyone looking for a first rate historical fiction.
