About the Author Corrie ten Boom (1892-1983) was born in Haarlem, The Netherlands. Her family owned a watch repair shop, which housed the "hiding place" where many Jewish people and Resistance workers hid for their lives. After her arrest and release from the Ravensbrück concentration camp due to a clerical error, Corrie was invited to share her experiences in more than sixty countries. The Hiding Place was first released in 1971.Elizabeth and John Sherrill have co-authored numerous bestsellers--classics such as The Hiding Place, The Cross and the Switchblade, and God's Smuggler--and have traveled the world researching and writing articles and books. Formerly senior editors and now roving editors for Guideposts magazine, John and Elizabeth co-founded Chosen Books, along with Leonard and Catherine Marshall LeSourd. John and Elizabeth have three grown children and live in Massachusetts.

Boling The story of Corrie Ten Boom as related in her classic book The Hiding Place is one of those must read books. I was excited to receive an updated version of this book that is geared towards the young reader. Having a 13 year old daughter in our home, I am quite confident this condensed version will connect young minds with this timeless true life tale of faith, tragedy, and hope.While the regular version of The Hiding Place is not a tremendously hard read, providing a version that young people can enjoy and read through in a reasonably short amount of time is an excellent move on the part of the publisher. Quite frankly, I wish more publishers would take this same approach and condense more classic works for youth to enjoy.The story of Corrie Ten Boom is a heart-wrenching tale. Risking their lives to save Jews from the hands of the Nazi regime, the Ten Boom family is betrayed and Corrie is tossed into a concentration camp for daring to stand up against the Nazi atrocity. This is an important book even today. It speaks of the need to stand up in the face of evil, even if it means putting your own life in jeopardy. It speaks quite frankly of doing what is right even when all those around you are not.Throughout this version, there are well done black and white drawings that will provide the young mind with a bit of a picture of what was taking place. While some may not view such pictures as important to the overall story, for younger readers, it helps break up the chapters into more manageable sections, essentially giving them something to shoot for goal wise as they are reading. Kids often have shorter attention spans than adults (well sometimes) so short chapters with interspersed picture breaks is a great approach and will keep the young reader connected to the overall story.Furthermore, as a homeschool parent, this is a tool we will use when we get to this section of world history. The Hiding Place puts a needed personal connection for the reader to this period of history, making what took place more than just facts and figures in a history book. Understanding from the perspective of someone who endured the horror of the Nazi concentration camp is a vital teaching tool and we will definitely use this book as part of our teaching strategy when the time arises.I highly recommend this book for parents to read with their children, especially in relation to discussions about the Nazis or persecution in general. In the United States we are somewhat insulated from such things and The Hiding Place is a needed and sobering reminder of the horror of man’s inhumanity to their fellow man.I received this book for free from Chosen Books for this review. By Chris Gregory The Hiding Place is an enthralling autobiography of the World War II experiences of Corrie Ten Boom. Miss Ten Boom is a captivating writer and her story is truly inspirational. Her family was led by a meek, watch repairman. That patriarch was a devoted believer in the love of God and the scriptures, both old and new testaments. The book brought to my mind a tale of Harriet Tubman meets Anne Frank.After the German invasion of Holland, the Ten Booms hid Jews in their home and watch repair shop. They also became active members of the Dutch Resistance and made numerous connections between Jewish and Christian homes, an act similar to that of the Underground Railroad of the U.S. Civil War era.The activities of Corrie, her sister Betsie, and their father were eventually discovered, and they were imprisoned for their subversive actions. During captivity, they suffered great humiliation and pain, but they continued their mission to bring joy to those around them through the loving word of God. Throughout all the suffering, their belief remained strong, and Corrie's faith grew enormously. Although her sister and father died in prison, Corrie returned to their home and continued to help the less fortunate and preach the gospel. After the war, she toured Holland, Germany, all of Europe and finally the world, providing the people this message..."God's love and forgiveness is stronger than man's power ...stronger than the pain, suffering, and hardship of life!"I'm certain that some readers would find the opening chapters tedious and uninteresting, but I believe that the foundation provided in those chapters is necessary to the full understanding of the ten Boom tale.After reading this story, it is difficult to realize that people could be so hateful as were the Nazis. And too, it is incredible that people like Corrie ten Boom could forgive them for the Holocaust. However, she realized that forgiveness was not hers to offer; she was merely passing on the word that Christ was forgiveness and the redeemer. It is also difficult to comprehend that there are individuals, groups, and leaders, even now, proclaiming that Jews and Christians should die for their belief in His loving forgiveness. It is hard to understanding that there are still people who believe that the Holocaust was a fantasy.The Hiding Place is a moving and inspirational story, and I strongly recommend it! Vandenbosch Corrie Ten Boom has worked alongside her father and the rest of her family in a small watch shop on a quiet corner in a friendly city in the Netherlands her entire life. Change is fast approaching as rumors of war and eventually war itself reach her quiet life. God has big plans in store for her and her family though, as they risk their lives to hide Jews and other people on the run from the Nazis. A secret room constructed in their home serves as a hiding place for several years as they help numerous people. Until the day they are betrayed. Torn from their beloved home, the family is imprisoned, first in the Netherlands, and then in the dreaded concentration camps in Germany. Even in the darkest of hours, facing starvation, stark loneliness, illness and even death, Corrie does not give up and brings the light of Jesus Christ to the darkness, delivering hope where there was none before. This inspiring and gripping story written by Elizabeth and John Sherrill, as told to them by Corrie Ten Boom, covers Corrie's early life until the time of her death, with much of the book concentrating on the years that she and her family daringly hid Jews in their home and the time Corrie spent in German concentration camps. Corrie's, and her family's, unwavering faith in God for help and deliverance shine through every page of the story as their total reliance on the Lord led to incredible adventures, some heartbreaking and tragic. Besides being very well told, what makes this story so gripping is the knowledge that every detail happened. History unfolded before Corrie as she followed God's direction in her life and in doing so saved many people from certain death.
