Bear Counts (The Bear Books), by Karma Wilson

From School Library Journal PreS-K—Following on the heels of Bear Sees Colors (S. & S., 2014), this concept book introduces the numbers from one to five. As Bear and Mouse's day unfolds, the friends have various encounters that allow Bear to count. A pattern of set-up and reveal is used throughout the book. "Bear hears funny sounds coming/from an aspen tree./ It is Raven, Owl, and Wren,/and the bear counts… [next page] "three!" Wilson's easy-to-read rhyming text is enhanced by Chapman's acrylic paint illustrations which feature bright colors, apt expressions, and perfect detail. The set-up page is a full spread with many grouped items of the number to be revealed—great for close inspection. The reveal page contains four of those items (with text) and plenty of white space between to make it easy to spot and count the items. VERDICT An enjoyable choice for group or individual use; purchase where Wilson's "Bear" titles are popular or additional counting books are needed.—Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH

Review "Bear's fans may get practice counting the number of times they ask for this again." (Kirkus Reviews March 2015)

All of those young readers familiar with Bear, Mouse, Hare, Raven and Wren will be delighted by this new offering that combines a very well written text with some spot on educational elements that are sure to have your young reader counting to five with bear. Engaging counting books that stop at five are hard to find, which is just part of the reason why I was so delighted by this book.Bear Counts alternates between a two page spread that is pure story, then a two page spread featuring each number, the number word, and small pictures of items that can be easily defined and counted. The text moves seamlessly between story and counting, with nary a glitch. The repeating refrain of "Can you count along with Bear" is sure to draw in readers who are just learning their numbers. The final rhyme "Numbers, numbers everywhere. Now you can count, just like Bear!" will instill confidence in young counters and make them want to count the fish, otters, crawdads, and turtles over and over again.

Best suited for ages 2-5 By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: In this installment of the Bear series, Bear counts to five by noticing the things around him in nature.ILLUSTRATIONS: As always, these Bear pictures are colorful, soft, fun, warm and fuzzy. But because this book is tailored to the littlest ones, some of the illustrations become too busy for the young reader to find the correct number of items.THE GOOD: It is fun to count with an old friend as Bear walks through the forest. The story encourages the reader to find more things to count than what is named. The book introduces new vocabulary such as muskrats, dragonfly, aspen tree, lily pads, and crawdads. And although this book only counts to five, this makes for a shorter sitting time for the little wiggly ones. It is easier to keep their attention than if this book went all the way up to tenTHE NOT AS GOOD: The flow of the rhyming is pretty rough in this one.AGE RECOMMENDATION: Although this is advertised for grades pre-k to 2nd, I really feel like counting to five is better suited for ages 2-5. Past that age, kids are counting far beyond numbers 1-5.

What Fun By Daniel Middleton The international bestselling writing and illustrating team of Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman are back with the second entry in their new concept series of Bear picture books. In this adventure, the gang's all here: Mouse, Hare, Raven, Owl, Wren, Badger and the rest, joining in the counting fun that is sure to delight younger kids. As usual, we are taken on a brief tour of Bear's nature surroundings, and we stumble across animals and fruits, and other colorful items to count. The rhythm of the book's poems is timed to perfection and with each page turn the counting adventure heightens, until we're swimming with a bevy of woodland creatures in a shimmering pond.Chapman, who renders her artwork in acrylic paint, is in top form here. This series is certainly pushing the boundaries with its vibrant mix of colors and nature shots that are pure eye-candy. A true delight for the ears and eyes!
