The magical friendship of Phoebe and her best friend, unicorn Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, is back in this second adventure of a girl and her mythical creature! One year has passed since Phoebe skipped a rock across a pond, accidentally hit a unicorn in the face, and was granted a single wish—which she used to make the unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, her obligational best friend. In some ways, not much has changed. At school Phoebe still clashes with her rival--and sometimes “frenemy”--he ever-taunting and imperious Dakota. Outside of school, she still fills her free time with extra-credit homework assignments, dramatic monologues about the injustices associated with school cliques, and imaginative conspiracy theories regarding global forces like the “powerful construction paper lobby.” But unlike before, Phoebe now has a best friend to share it with—someone to make her laugh and to listen to all her extravagant ideas. In this second volume of Heavenly Nostrils, titled, Unicorn on a Roll, the reader is invited on a journey into the lives of Phoebe and Marigold as they navigate the difficulties of grade school, celebrate the winter holidays, and explore their super hero/super villain personas together. Join in the fun, as Phoebe competes against Dakota for the leading role of “Lisa Ladybug” in their fourth-grade play—or as she struggles to “manage” the PR debacle related to her nose-picking-scandal. (“I will neither confirm nor deny the events surrounding Boogergate.”) Witness a band of unicorns staging an “intervention” and learn all the details of Marigold’s secret crush on a mysterious creature she has never seen. Perhaps most important, watch as this surprising friendship between a charming, nine-year-old dreamer and a vain, mythical beast forever changes both of them for the better.

Review “The book is a perfect mix of ongoing stories…I plainly love this strip, and I love the books.” (Cory Doctorow, BoingBoing)“…charming…the comparison to Calvin and Hobbes is apt—it has a joke-a-day format with recurring themes and gentle, winning humor that often results in guffaws. Also like Calvin and Hobbes, there is a thin veneer of snarky cynicism that will keep older readers interested in the stories well beyond most children’s magical unicorn-loving phase.” (Booklist)Unicorn and snark fans rejoice…” (The Bulletin of The Center for Children's Books)Named one of “14 Notable Chapter Books for Summer Reading” list; “My kids and I adore these characters and love this new book. It’s one we’ll read over and over again.” (Melissa Taylor, Imagination Soup)“This is an excellent addition to a family-friendly home library. Adults and kids alike will love this warm and witty book. Buy it!” (Kala Kumar, Examiner.com)

About the Author Dana Claire Simpson grew up in Gig Harbor, Washington, drawing the entire time. She eventually graduated from The Evergreen State College, despite having spent all her time drawing, and not always for credit. Attempts at doing real work along the way are hardly worth mentioning; the relevant fact is that, from 1998 to 2008, she drew the internet comic strip Ozy and Millie. After winning the Amazon-sponsored Comic Strip Superstar Contest in 2009, Universal Uclick signed her to a development deal for Heavenly Nostrils, which was later renamed Phoebe and Her Unicorn. She currently lives in the Seattle area with her tech genius husband and her fairly stupid cat.

There aren't a lot of kid-safe graphic novels for girly girls. Girls can read graphic novels of any theme, of course, but my kiddo only likes to read about girl characters, and likes "pretty" graphics! But so many of the comics out there are aimed at teen and adult men, and aren't appropriate or empowering for younger female audiences.Graphic novels are a great way to promote independent reading, since they're hard to follow when read aloud by someone else. And they are great for teaching emotion recognition, with multiple facial expressions per page. And most introduce the thought versus speech concept, which is especially good for kids with social delays, who don't always realize that not everyone says what they think or means what they say.

By Splashes Into Books With a title like this and a definitely feminine heroine, you may assume this book is targeted at girls – you’re wrong! The main characters are Phoebe, a self confessed nerd who met the unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, after Phoebe accidentally threw a stone in Marigold’s face! Other characters include Max, who Phoebe really likes and another unicorn, Lord Splendid Humility, who Marigold has never fully seen but still has a crush on.This delightful comic adventure story is hilarious, beautifully illustrated, easy to relate to and great entertainment. Although not actually divided into chapters or stories, there are a variety of events related, from problems at school, jokes, getting up to mischief, auditioning for the school play, unicorn birthday party and others. The events are easy to relate to, the text generally humorous and the whole book appealing. After the end of the story there are three extras – the first shows how the illustrator draws both characters to show different expressions, complete with annotations to explain them. After that there’s a recipe for making “Sparkly, Colourful Unicorn Poop Cookies!” and finally illustrated instructions to make an origami ‘Happy Horse’ head. My congratulations to the author and publisher, too, for actually presenting the text in a format children will be able to read (for once I’ve not got to plead for the text not to be in block capitals!) I believe the author is correct when, in her introduction, she makes it clear that it is for anyone and everyone “girl, boy, child, adult – Phoebe and her Unicorn is for YOU.”Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

That alone is enough to let you know how awesome this comic strip is By Bufster3 This follow up to Dana Simpson's Phoebe and Her Unicorn is a compilation of comic strip from her nationally syndicated comic strip Phoebe and Her Unicorn. The comic follows the adventures of a little girl, and her best friend, a unicorn named Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. The comic was originally called Heavenly Nostrils. It's appropriate for, and appeals to people of all ages. It's clever, funny, at times irreverent, heartwarming, and just so darn good! The comic went into national syndication in over a hundred U.S. newspapers in early 2015. It's also available on GoComics.com. Fans, as well as people who aren't familiar with the comic strip will love this book and the first book Phoebe and Her Unicorn. Fans of the new syndicated strip will notice differences between the new strip and the originals in this book, because Ms. Simpson had to go back to the beginning of the story so new readers could catch up, and her editors asked for some small changes. Buy this book, it's delightful.
