“Walking into Advent can be like walking through the wardrobe.”

With its enchanting themes of snow and cold, light and darkness, meals and gifts, temptation and sin, forgiveness and hope―and even an appearance by Father Christmas―C. S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe fits naturally into the Advent season. As the reader seeks a storied king and anticipates the glorious coming of Christmas, these twenty-eight devotions alternate between Scripture and passages from the novel to prompt meditation on Advent themes. Each devotion also includes questions for reflection. The book also provides several resources for churches, including four sessions for small group discussion and ideas for creating a “Narnia Night” for families. Readers will ultimately come to know God better while journeying through Narnia.

Review

“This excellent book makes me want to spend my next Advent in Narnia. Haverkamp’s week-by-week guide is great for families, as well as for adults of any age who are looking for a delightful way to reflect upon the Advent season.” ―Paul Jarzembowski, Coordinator of Youth and Young Adult Ministries, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

“Heidi Haverkamp writes that Advent is a borderland. Her book is a reliable map for exploring this border country. She leads us with a lively faith that moves from the world of flat practicality and cynicism to the possibility of one filled with delight and risk and enchantment, one in which Christ is ‘on the move’ in our lives.” ―The Right Rev. Jeffrey Lee, Bishop, The Episcopal Diocese of Chicago

“Heidi Haverkamp ’s Advent in Narnia is both delightful and profound: delightful because it provides a vehicle for Christians of all ages to experience the joys of C.S. Lewis’s classic fantasy; profound because it explores Advent’s themes of hope and expectation with real theological depth.”―The Very Reverend Gary R. Hall, Dean, Washington National Cathedral

By In the Bookcase "Advent in Narnia" is the perfect book for casual and fanatic Narnians alike. You're sure to discover new meaning in the story of The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe.Included are 28 short chapters to be enjoyed daily during the Advent season. The chapters encourage you to read it along with the The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe book itself, so that you can refresh your memory on everything that the devotion covers in the original story.I found the daily readings to be short, sweet and offer a new thought about C.S. Lewis's writings, or other holiday-themed meanings behind the religious symbols in the original story. I do believe it opened my eyes more to some of the hidden definitions of the characters and obscure elements. Although I have personally read several of the Narnia books, I haven't yet researched into Lewis's writings further. Heidi Haverkamp's book helped introduce me to some things I hadn't figured out yet myself, and still put a Christmas twist on it.- - - - - - -"It's easy to be cynical about the holidays, but if we can allow ourselves to feel some deep delight or let our imaginations run wild in the wonder of even the silliness of the season, we might be surprised into seeing both ourselves and God's world differently." (Heidi Haverkamp)- - - - - - -The author even includes additional material for a group study -- helpful to have if your church would be interested in reading this Advent study together, or if you just want to enjoy it with your family members or friends.{Plus, if I hadn't read this book, I wouldn't know about ALL the movie versions of The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe that I could watch!}Thanks to the author and Netgalley for the free review copy & for the opportunity to express my honest opinions.

Reflections for the Season Like so many others By Mrs Anne L Johnson Advent in Narnia.....Reflections for the SeasonLike so many others, I grew up reading and loving the adventure, mystery and excitement of the Narnia series. So a Christmas season devotional based on these books, and more particularly 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' was sure to interest and delight. Certainly, the cold winter landscape of Narnia with the people watching and looking for a king is the perfect parallel for the Christmas story. I did, however, feel a small degree of reservation before I opened the pages of this book; well, to be precise, flipped open the e-pages on my iPad. (It's not exactly the same, is it?) But I wondered if the readings would be more about the Narnia books and less about the Saviour.I was reassured by Heidi Haverkamp's comment, "My purpose in writing this book is not to help you know Narnia better but to know God better.... I hope that by spending a little time in Narnia, this Advent, you will get to know Aslan- and Jesus Christ- better, and to prepare for Jesus' birth at Christmas all the more richly for it."I particularly liked the introduction to this series. The opening reading reminds us of our need for Jesus. He alone can lead us beyond the shadows of our current lives through the doorway to love and life. It's a great starting position for this book of Christmas devotions. You'll find daily devotions with titles like, 'A Great Light', 'Turkish Delight,' 'The Lamppost,' and the 'Full Armour of God.' If you are familiar with the Narnia stories, I'm sure that these words immediately bring certain scenes from the book to mind. Heidi suggests reading along in the novel to refresh your memory of the story as Narnia sheds new light on the Christmas story. (You could also watch the movie.) Questions for reflection accompany each devotion. The book also includes resources for churches. There are Small Group questions for discussion or reflection. You'll also find instructions for presenting a church Narnia Night for Families with ideas for decorations, activity stations, costumes, crafts and more, leading into the church Christmas service and prayer. If you're looking for a more meaningful Christmas focus for your own family, you could present a simplified version that would make your Christmas truly memorable.Whether you know and love Narnia books or have just heard of them, I think you will enjoy this Advent devotional and will wonder anew, this Christmas, 'at the depth of God's love, the power of Christ's grace and totality of his sacrifice.'(Copy provided for personal review through NetGalley.)

I didn't know anything about him until I was in college and I have read the Chronicles of Narnia several times since then. So a devotional book called "Advent in Narnia" was quite appealing. I was not disappointed. This book focuses mainly on "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" and that is appropriate for those of us who have experienced Advent in the cold and snow because Narnia in this book in the series is cold and snowy.Although these devotionals for the days of Advent may be more meaningful to those who have read the books I found that enough context is given in the introduction and in each reading for the reader to understand the point being made. I can also see this book becoming a family tradition during Advent with the family reading aloud the chapter noted for the reading then reading the devotional content. The reading for each day concludes with some discussion questions that I found very trenchant.I do not write this review indiscriminately . I have tried several other devotional books this year and they were not what I wanted or what I found useful. I highly recommend this book. NetGalley.com provided me a copy with the understanding that I would write an honest review which I just did.
