Falls Short & Apart By Ritlua Unfortunately, despite the potential of the first book (which I really did like and would recommend!!), I found this one to fall short of my expectations.The buildup was a bit slow and confusing, oftentimes the politics either making little to no sense (with the exclusion of knowing any other politicians than the ones In The Family fighting, and thus having very little awareness to how many were on each side or why), as well as the buildup to the scene I just gave up on this book for.***SPOILERS****Joel and Gib have a good thing. They still could have, as both obviously want to continue what they have. I never expected the first book to be them falling in love and the second one to be a huge misunderstanding breaking them apart. Honestly, it was foreshadowed with the author making them both have someone to fall back on (both seeming kind of contrived, and one not all-together a healthy choice in my opinion as it's just a bunch of hero worship that I suppose could one day put them on equals but that honestly just seems kind of random), but the way they're split up just doesn't work for me.Both of them obviously wanting to get back together, then just some stupid misunderstanding causing them to hurt each other?The biggest plotline in this book is: SOMEONE INTERRUPTS A POTENTIALLY GOOD MOMENT. (They literally have the mother of all bad luck in timing)It's a personal dislike, the Misunderstanding Plotline, so maybe others will be okay with it, but it felt contrived and silly and unnecessary. But, Real Life Happens type thing I suppose. It just seemed kind of weird, and that Joel kept doing things he regretted without the ability he had in the first novel to just explain himself better. Especially after a three year relationship, I imagined they'd be better at reading each other, but it honestly felt like their relationship continued from the first volume with no growth. So maybe that's why the author felt like splitting them. Which is fine, I suppose, and not the entire reason for my review.The Bad Guys and everyone putting up with them makes NO sense. Why would anyone allow someone who literally can't keep his mouth shut to go on a Very Important Mission?? I found myself more and more frustrated with everything as the novel went on. I really wanted to like it. I liked the first one well enough, but in the end I was honestly just happy I have Kindle Unlimited because I got the 86% of the book and just gave up.***END SPOILERS***I think it's just one of those instances where some books aren't for everyone. I'm sure some people will like this book, but honestly I struggled through most of it and eventually just had to call it. I can see the potential. It just wasn't for me.

By Amazon Customer I enjoyed how the story is told from the perspectives of Gib and Joel. I've read a book, that will soon be a movie, that did not successfully jump between two main characters as well as this did. Beautifully done with that!The book sucked me in from the beginning and offered tails of fantasy, mystery and romance. The author successfully mingles all 3 for an amazing story that makes you love the heroes and hate the villains and still want more! So often, I found myself wanting to hug Joel, chastise Hasain and punch Liro!What I enjoy most about the Chronicles of Arden series, is how it touches on topics we face everyday in life in the real world. ; LGBT, politics, economic status and more.

I can't think of much that goes right here. I have to hold out hope that things will turn out well in the next book, due in the fall.We are reunited with our old friends from book one. As previously, I have trouble placing the secondary characters. I cannot remember who is related to whom, and what positions they hold.Liro acts just as despicably as before, but we see glimpses of vulnerability. I feel some slight sympathy for him. This is more Joel's book than Gib's, and we hear less from some people who were more prominent in book one. There is barely any reference to the conspiracy or assassination attempt in book one. There are new problems to deal with here. Maybe it will all be tied together later.A few new characters pop up, and there is also a new secret that seems to have been just been invented.The story flows well and I read it in one sitting in about half a day. I was so eager to find out what would happen that I skimmed some parts very quickly. I wasn't much interested in descriptions of objects, and even when there was action I skimmed when it moved too slowly for me. I skipped one particularly gruesome section.There were only a few minor cases of what I considered mistakes. As with the first book, the King is called Highness instead of Majesty. The Crown Prince is called the Crowned Prince. The past tense of bid is bade, but bid was used here. Finally, pour was used twice for pore.
