Putting the dead in deadline To Bee or not to Bee? When the widely disliked Honeywell Stingers football coach is found murdered, 17-year-old Millie is determined to investigate. She is chasing a lead for the school newspaper – and looking to clear her father, the assistant coach, and prime suspect.
Millie's partner is gorgeous, smart—and keeping secrets Millie joins forces with her mysterious classmate Chase who seems to want to help her even while covering up secrets of his own.
She’s starting to get a reputation…without any of the benefits. Drama—and bodies—pile up around Millie and she chases clues, snuggles Baxter the so-ugly-he’s-adorable bassett hound, and storms out of the world’s most awkward school dance/memorial mash-up. At least she gets to eat a lot of pie.
Best-selling author Beth Fantaskey’s funny, fast-paced blend of Clueless and Nancy Drew is a suspenseful page-turner that is the best time a reader can have with buried weapons, chicken clocks, and a boy who only watches gloomy movies…but somehow makes Millie smile. Bee-lieve it.

From School Library Journal Gr 7–10—Millie Ostermeyer writes for her school newspaper, hangs out with her friends, worries about her widowed father, and wonders about the new guy at school. She's a lot like her literary heroine, Nancy Drew. Millie and her mother would read the mysteries together, while the latter was dying of cancer, and now the books have a special meaning as the teen tries to deal with her grief. When the head football coach at her school is found dead, Millie's detective skills kick into high gear. The list of possible suspects is long, since Coach Killdare was not everyone's favorite person. Unfortunately, the number one suspect is Millie's father, Killdare's assistant coach—who often very publicly disagreed with the victim. As Millie investigates, she uncovers some surprising facts about all of the suspects, including her own dad. As Chase helps her look for clues, they soon become friends, taking tentative steps toward a romance. The mystery climaxes with the sudden revelation of the murderer, a character no one had even considered. The narrative emulates the "Nancy Drew" series (Penguin) formula: short chapters with cliff-hangers endings. This novel is more character driven, as the heroine works through her feelings about her mother's illness and death. For readers who want a solid mystery with a dollop of romance.—Diana Pierce, formerly at Leander High School, TX
From Booklist When student reporter Millie finds the dead body of the football team’s coach, she is determined to beat rival reporter Vivienne to the story, especially since Viv keeps writing articles implicating Millie’s dad: the assistant coach, mayor, and now lead suspect. Coach Killdare wasn’t popular, though, and Millie’s suspects encompass everyone from the pushover principal to the furious former quarterback. One of these suspects, current QB and handsome enigma Chase, also seems to be investigating, despite Millie’s attempts to shake him off. Unconventional Millie is beleaguered by the impossible standards set by her idol, Nancy Drew, who did everything with class and manners. Examples: Nancy Drew wouldn’t tell off a police officer, question suspects while wearing a stained T-shirt, or eat pie with her hands while in the company of a cute boy. That Millie does—and with enthusiasm—is what makes her so delightful. Fantaskey’s funny murder mystery, with multiple red herrings and suspenseful cliff-hangers, is a breeze to read, but watching Millie steamroll those in her way as she solves the murder is the real treat. Grades 9-12. --Krista Hutley
Review "Buzz Kill is a smart chick-lit mystery with plenty of twists and turns."—VOYA "The fun comes from Millie's spunky sleuthing and Fantaskey's witty, cliffhanger chapter endings, which leave readers begging to turn the page. If only Nancy Drew had this much excitement solving her cases."—Kirkus "For readers who want a solid mystery with a dollop of romance."—School Library Journal * "A quirky cast and Millie's quasi-bumbling antics make Fantaskey's murder mystery a breezy and thoroughly entertaining read. It's easy to get swept up in the buildup to the exciting final confrontation."—Publishers Weekly, starred review "Fantaskey's funny murder mystery, with multiple red herrings and suspenseful cliff-hangers is a breeze to read, but watching Millie steamroll those in her way as she solves the murder is the real treat."—Booklist "Fans looking for a less prim and proper Nancy Drew (and a few more lustful kisses) will find her here."—Bulletin

Some of Fantaskey’s other books include JESSICA’S GUIDE TO DATING ON THE DARK SIDE, JESSICA RULES THE DARK SIDE and JEKEL LOVES HYDE. The author currently lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and her three daughters.BUZZKILL features Millie Ostermeyer, a 17-year-old who loves to write and read Nancy Drew novels. Millie hates sports, especially football, but she suspects some foul play happening at her high school. She starts to write a list of people that despise Coach Killdare and she eventually comes up with a genuine murder mystery on her hands. Once she realizes something has gone awry at school, she gets out her notebook and begins reporting.Chase Albright is the star football jock. He is almost fluent in French, a straight A student, and very close with Coach Killdare. Millie has a huge crush on Chase, but she puts her feelings aside after she sees him regularly visiting Coach Killdare’s home. She believes that he may be one of the suspects in this murder mystery she is trying to crack. But, there is a huge bump in the road for Millie --- the head cheerleader Vivienne Fitch is on to this case as well, and she isn’t backing down. The race is on; Millie and Viv go head-to-head and they will do anything to solve this gruesome murder mystery, even if that means putting their own lives on the line. This book is perfect for fans of NANCY DREW, HARRIET THE SPY, and even Poe’s tales. You can have your heroine read and admire Nancy Drew books. Heck, you can even put in a running bit about what Nancy Drew meant to your heroine and her Mom, (as happens in this book). You do not, however, want to write an actual Nancy Drew book. I've reread a few recently, and they are earnest, proper and almost stately in design and execution. Long stretches are dry and mannered. Some read as though they were attempts by Henry James to write a YA novel. That's fine as far as it goes; maybe it's even sort of noble, but it's a hard sell.So you go modern girl hero. The danger here is where do you draw the line on snark, angst and dreamy boy crushing? I've also read some teen detective books recently in which the heroine is so nasty, so self involved and such a drama queen that you secretly hope she ends up one of the murderer's victims and the book is finished by the bad guy. That's why this book shines and seems so widely well liked. Our heroine is funny, self-aware, vulnerable, feisty, stubborn, loyal, romantic, practical, and articulate. She is a thoroughly modern Nancy Drew with just the right blend of smartz, attitude, and gumption to touch all of the old-fashioned bases in a present day style. Now, you drop this perfectly winning character into a reasonably well plotted mystery and watch the sparks fly. The bonus is that the author has a pretty sly sense of humor and an engaging insight into teen behavior, which means you get some funny, cutting or just believable narrative asides and character behavior. That makes the whole high school mystery project just that much more engaging and rewarding. So, you have an appealing heroine, decent secondary characters, a couple of funny set pieces, an interesting plot, a few clever and novel angles, and some snappy writing. Works for me.Please note that I found this book while browsing my local library's Kindle ebook goodies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

A football coach everyone hates is murdered and chief suspects include our heroine's father and the star player she has a crush on. Educated by her complete set of Nancy Drew mysteries, she's out to find the killer. It's no spoiler to say that indeed she does and there's lots of fun on the way to the solution.Beth Fantaskey is in top form here with wit and a cunning style that should definitely capture YA readers. There are misleading clues and red herrings galore. Highly recommended.
