Review Winner of a 2015 Novel of the Year award from the Chicago Writers AssociationOld Heart mingles a bit of suspense with precise, unsparing reflection on personal histories against a backdrop of difficult events. In this the novel might be compared to Wallace Stegner’s Crossing to Safety or Colm Tóibín’s The Master, and it is nearly as well written. It should appeal to readers of any age and might make a good gift for a friend in doubt about the possibilities for renewal late in life. The Chicago Book Review"This is a novel of love and of loss and of self-determination. Old Heart moves through time and grabs your interest on every page and will stay with you for keeps." Chicago Tribune"A life-affirming novel about love and second chances" Publishers Weekly"Old Heart manages to weave together an astonishing array of themes and layersthe perils and freedoms of old age, the complexity of family ties, the liberation of travel, and finally, Ferry presents and proves the bold and needed idea that it's never too late to re-open the past to recast the present." DAVE EGGERS"Peter Ferry’s writing is wry and beautiful, and this exuberant novel shows how a man driven by love can add a surprising extra chapter to his life." ELIZABETH MCKENZIE"An important meditation on mortality and an honest, unsentimental celebration of the power of love, Old Heart has the feel of an instant literary classic." Don De Grazia

By Sheralyn Campbell I tried to take my time reading this book because the writing itself is so beautiful. This is an honest look at life, what happens to dreams and hopes, the stories we tell ourselves....while the years unfold. This story pulls no punches; it is a square,, dead-on look look at some hard facts: despite our intentions, marriages falter, children disappoint, we lose people we cherish, and always, things do not turn out the way we thought they would. Yet, we persist: we grow older and struggle to remain relevant, independent - we want our presence to be valued. We want to be authentic. We want to love and be loved. Our protagonist Tom Johnson is committed to doing all of that - despite his age and various limitations. It is the combination of his drive, his wisdom and self examination that we fall in love with and cheer for. OLD HEART is a fabulous book club selection. And, I can't help but think what a beautiful movie it will make.

A real page turner, exploring some of the most important issues that occur in families. If you are older yourself or have an older parent, it will really make you think about your relationships and what is important to you. It is also just a great story, with lots of interwoven themes, making it completely engrossing. It is well written and a lot of fun to read. I couldn't put it down. Finished it in 24 hours.

The story, while simply told, is complex. As I read, I often remembered the stories of my parents and I wondered how my children and I will relate during my last years of life. It is a realistic portrayal of life, yet inspirational. It a truth that old people still have dreams and wish to live with dignity. I simply could not stop reading the story. Yet, when the story ended, I felt complete.
