Dark Justice, by Brandilyn Collins

Review "This one is a nail-biting thrill ride from start to finish. A fascinating look at the reality of what would happen if terrorists hit our electrical grid system, this is a frighteningly true-to-life scenario. Hannah, who balances caring for a mother with dementia with everything else in her life, adds another piece to a tale with which many readers will be able to relate." -- RT Book Reviews"It's clear that Collins has mastered her craft. The book is strong in its plot, its writing, and its technical details. The story kept me glued to my chair from the first page to the last." -- P.G., Goodreads  "This book grabbed my attention IMMEDIATELY, and I was finished in about 24 hours. It called for me to put my life on hold while I followed Hannah." -- J.R., Goodreads"Oh. My. Goodness. Brandilyn Collins just about did me in with this one! Dark Justice may be her most chilling book yet, probably because the scenario is far too easy to imagine in today's world of terrorism and cyber attacks. Collins is a brilliant author." -- Mocha with Linda "This is a book about how your life can spin out of control faster than you can blink an eye. The reality of the premise of the book is so real it's very scary to imagine. I read the book in two days. The house now needs cleaned." -- Barbara, Goodreads"Just finished Dark Justice. My heart beat rapidly the entire book!!! My blood pressure was surely up. Talk about Seatbelt Suspense!!! Kept me on the edge of my seat. Could NOT put the book down and afraid to turn the page for fear of what would happen." -- B.H., Facebook  "I stayed up all night, Thursday, reading Dark Justice. Once I started, I couldn't stop. Great book!" S.J., Facebook"Hold on... here we go again!" -- Susan, Goodreads "What if terrorists decided to sabotage our power grid? The ensuing story was riveting. The details and facts felt very real and plausible. The amount of thorough research that must have gone into this book shines through." -- Fitsyzmom, Amazon reviewer "I am a big Brandilyn Collins fan and this book did not disappoint. The twists and turns of the plot kept me reading and the characters were believable. In addition to the mystery, the book highlights the trials of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer Disease." -- Avid Reader, Amazon reviewer

From the Author Dark Justice carries the brand promise of my Seatbelt Suspense® novels: fast-paced, character-driven suspense with myriad twists and an interwoven thread of faith. While this story is fictional, it is based on the terrifying reality that terrorists could target America's electrical grid. In 2011, the consulting firm Pike Research issued a report stating that security for the electrical grid was in "near chaos," giving attackers the "upper hand" since many attacks could not be prevented. The problem centered on aging infrastructures with no built-in security. And the security that was present could be bypassed by a "$60 piece of software." The shutdown of just one local grid could cause a "cascade effect," said Pike, causing an entire region to lose power. I first learned this information when I saw a CNN report of an experiment conducted in 2007 by the U.S. Department of Energy. In the experiment, a replica of a power-plant control system was hacked and damaged by remote. The generator shook and released steam, and soon went out of control. The entire video lasts about a minute. In 2010, a unique and sophisticated computer worm spread through Iran, India, and Indonesia. Named Stuxnet, the worm looked for very specific settings, then injected its own code into that system. After a few years of studying this worm, security researcher Ralph Langner concluded he was 100 percent certain Stuxnet was specifically targeted to wreak havoc in Iran's uranium-enrichment facility in Natanz. "This stuff is so bizarre," Langner told a reporter in an e-mail, "that I have to make up my mind how to explain this to the public." Later Langner said that now Stuxnet was "history," the current problem was "the next generation of malware that will follow." That was more than enough to set my imagination running. ~ Brandilyn

The story line is expertly drawn and the characters are so believable they almost seem real." One of Collins' best." -- Lynn M, Amazon reviewer "Once again Brandilyn Collins has taken me on a breath-gasping read! Having dealt with a dementia patient, I can tell you the situations she includes CAN happen....and what WOULD happen if you stumbled upon secrets so dark. . . You might never find justice. Incredible scenario and a great read. Loved it." -- Eileen Key, Amazon reviewer "I love a David and Goliath story and this is a great one." -- Joan N., Amazon reviewer "I could not put this book down! The plot is so well done and draws the reader in from the get-go. The tension and suspense keep readers on a tightrope, reading furiously to find out how each situation will be resolved. The series of unfolding events began when she decided to take the scenic route home. She and her mother came upon a car accident and stopped to help just like anyone else would. Little did they know that their world, along with everyone else's, was about to be turned upside down. This book completely stressed me out! Of course when you are talking about a suspense book, being stressed out is a very good thing. The tension kept mounting with each page that was turned. With each new incident you begin to wonder just who you can trust. If you are like me you will begin to think about what you would do in the situation. Where would you go? Who are the good guys? How would you prepare for the impending doom?In the preface of the story Ms. Collins gives you the background on the idea for the story. What if terrorists decided to sabotage our power grid? What would happen? The ensuing story was riveting. The details and facts felt very real and plausible. The amount of thorough research that must have gone into this book shines through. If you are looking for a novel that will leave you anxiously pondering what if . . . pick up a copy of Dark Justice!I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. No disappointment By Paul Goble This is the first book I've read by prolific Christian "Seatbelt Suspense" author Brandilyn Collins. It's clear that Collins has mastered her craft. The book is strong in its plot, its writing, and its technical details. The plot: The story kept me glued to my chair from the first page to the last. Hannah Shire happens across an auto accident and finds herself in possession of the key to stopping a domestic terrorist plot. The terrorists frame her for murder, then come after her, knowing she can't go to the authorities. The characters: The characters immediately drew my sympathy. Hannah is smart yet vulnerable. She tries to do what is right, makes mistakes, then has to correct the mistakes. I found myself angry with her on one point: with potentially thousands of lives at stake, I felt she should have placed the good of society above the safety of her loved ones. The writing: Point of view transitions are crystal clear. A few misspellings snuck past the editor. The writing isn't what I'd call literary, but it is focused and achieves it's purpose without distraction. The issues: The story explores some serious issues, without becoming bogged down in them. What does it take to care for a parent with dementia? How does one prepare for a future that might include dementia? How vulnerable is the US electrical infrastructure to terrorists? How do cops and citizens stay alert to terrorism when they're overwhelmed by daily emergencies? How do you figure out who to trust, when you don't know who the traitors are?The technical details: Collins did a great job of not writing beyond her research. She ventured into territory I know fairly well: the embedded computer systems that control the electrical grid, and encrypted hidden (steganographic) communication. The way the digital message was hidden was quite unrealistic, but I'll forgive that because realism would have killed the plot. (Messages are best hidden in media that looks innocent, not in media that says "look at me." And the messages wouldn't be visible at all, even with really good software, unless you already knew they were present.) I applaud the attention this story brings to the vulnerability of American infrastructure.

From the beginning you are hooked and it doesn't stop until the book ends. And it's amazing; there is no bad language, there are no sex scenes, and yet, it's a nonstop adventure. You will never go wrong with any of her books. They are entertaining, and you may even learn something without realizing it until later.
