About the Author Award-winning author Ginny Rorby holds an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Miami and an MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University. Engaging and thought provoking By Aud Reads I was so anxious to read this book after hearing about it from my daughter, who saw it at her school's book fair. The story is about Lily and her five year old brother, Adam, who has autism. I also have a five year old son named Adam, who also has autism. I felt like I couldn't let this book get past me without checking it out.The story is written from Lily's perspective, and it revolves around her home and school life; carrying the primary responsibility of caring for her brother, and dealing with the loneliness of having no one she can reach out to. Lily eventually makes friends with a girl her age who is blind, but who is not defined by her disability.I really like the way the characters are developed. Lily and her friend, Zoe, are witty, warmly sarcastic, and emotionally mature. It is nice to see twelve year old girls who are not presented as immature or empty headed, but as smart, conscientious girls. I also wanted to understand Lily's emotionally reserved step-father, and I enjoyed watching the layers of his personality get slowly peeled back so that the reasons for a lot of his actions made sense. Adam is portrayed compassionately, and while my son is fully verbal, unlike the Adam in the story, I still saw that they share a lot of characteristics. It's hard not to fall in love with Adam in this story because he is curious and funny. You can also see that Adam is a smart boy who is communicating very well, but on a level that is foreign to those who don't take the time to see what he is expressing in the style that works for him.I don't want to spoil the plot for others by disclosing too many details, but there were some moments I had to stop for a few minutes because of the emotions their circumstances brought out in me, and also because I purposely wanted to slow down to savor some of the wording and some of the subtle details. Grab a box of tissues before you get too comfortable. You will need to wipe your eyes a lot.Following the story, Ms. Rorby has included sources of some of her research, including books, websites, and the names of some of the people she has interviewed and studied. This is really interesting to me, because my interest in reading more about sea life, echolocation, oil spill devastation, and in a book she mentions about reaching an autistic child through Disney movies, is now piqued, and I know where to go to explore further.I really enjoyed this book, and I plan to pick up "Hurt Go Happy", also by Ginny Rorby, next. It's so much fun finding a new (new to me, that is) author to get excited about!

How to Speak Dolphin is a tale that looks at the struggles and triumphs of growing up with an autistic family member. Lily has lost her mom and is still mourning when we meet her, yet she is being expected to pretty much be her brother Adam’s caretaker. Because of this, Lily has very few friends and finds herself lonely and sad often. Her stepfather is lost in fantasy thinking that Adam is less work and less autistic than he really is. Lily is lost and tired though knows something needs to be done. She just wants her brother to be taken care of correctly, and she needs her stepfather to see it as well. It is through Lily’s guiding, and a bit of help from Adam’s new caretaker Suzanne, that Don finally seeks getting treatment for Adam through DAT, dolphin-assisted therapy, with a young dolphin named Nori recovering from cancer. During Lily’s journey through helping her brother (and herself), she becomes friends with Zoe, a young girl who lost her sight due to retinoblastoma, who also helps her realize that her life may not be what she’d expected, but it can still be good. This book, like all of Ginny’s, is quite a ride and makes the reader think about animal and human issues that are often ignored. Ginny Rorby has done it again.

Captivating and Heartwarming By Young Mensan BookParade The book, “How to Speak Dolphin” by Ginny Rorby, is a realistic fiction novel about a girl and her autistic brother. Ever since Lily lost her mother, she feels as if she is responsible for the welfare of her half-brother, Adam. Adam is autistic and needs special help. Lily’s stepfather, Don, an oncologist, does not acknowledge the fact that Adam has an issue and so Lily is a slave to her brother. Lily’s mom had recognized that Adam had autism and wanted to help him but it was too late now. All Lily has ever wanted was a life of her own, which does not always revolve around Adam; a life in which Lily can have friends and go out after school. One day, Don has an idea to use dolphin therapy to help Adam since Adam absolutely loves dolphins. Imagine Don’s luck when he is asked to help Nori, a young dolphin at the Oceanarium, who has cancer. Although Nori’s cancer goes into remission, it may return, and this allows Don to keep her in captivity. Don then uses her for Adam’s therapy and Nori and Adam become inseparable! Don thinks that Nori is the key to Adam’s problems and that she will give Adam the therapy he needs. On the other hand, Lily knows that Nori should not remain in captivity and should be free to be with her family. Meanwhile, Lily befriends a blind girl named Zoe who is very passionate about Nori and all other sea life held in captivity. Zoe believes the animals have the right to be free and helps Lily understand the importance of setting Nori free. This book shares the point of view of a girl struggling to help her autistic brother succeed while at the same time trying to help a dolphin held in captivity.Will Don finally agree to send Adam to a program that can really help him? Will Lily get the life she has been hoping for? Will Nori ever live free and in the wild again? “How to Speak Dolphin” is a magnificent story with a great plot. I would recommend this book for ages 10 and up since it contains a more challenging plot that is still captivating.
