From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Fletcher, 15, an orphan raised by a blacksmith in the Hominum Empire's northern village of Pelt discovers he has the ability to summon demonic creatures in this exciting fantasy trilogy opener. After Fletcher and Ignatius, his ferretlike demon, attack the local bully, Fletcher is forced to flee his village. Through a chance encounter with a mage, Fletcher finds himself attending an academy for battle mages. Trained mages are needed in Hominum's ongoing war with the orcs and in the armed truce against the elves. At the Academy, Fletcher, a commoner, endures scorn from the more skilled second-year students of noble birth, especially a pair of snobbish twin siblings, who are particularly cruel to Sylva, the elf chieftain's daughter, and the dwarf Othello. Dwarves are despised and treated as second-class citizens by many humans in Hominum. Their studies culminate in a year-end tournament that determines their student rankings and the opportunity for a senior military position. Fletcher and his small group of allies also become involved in a plot that threatens all of Hominum. This debut's similarities to J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" books, Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" (Knopf), and J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" (Scholastic) (the novel even has a nasty professor with a prejudice against commoners and other races) are unmistakable, but readers won't mind. Fletcher's a sympathetic character whose impulsive behavior leads him to make understandable mistakes. VERDICT The appealing characters, fast-paced plot, focus on racial politics, and interesting demon varieties (demonology addendum included) make this an enjoyable read.—Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trenton
Review “Fletcher is an orphan who lives in the small village of Pelt, not far from the elfen border and the farthest outpost in an on-going war against the orcs. Despite being a skilled hunter and apprentice blacksmith, Fletcher has little status in the village. A chance encounter leads to Fletcher discovering that he can summon demons. This rare skill is found primarily among the nobles of the kingdom and is essential on the battlefront. When his new demon protects him against the village bullies, Fletcher flees for his life and becomes a student at the school for battlemages. . . . [This] plot-focused fantasy adventure will be a satisfying read for a wide age range of readers, especially fans of role-playing games and Christopher Paolini.” ―VOYA

By Tracy Joyce Matharu’s book has a HUGE following on Wattpad. (It had over 3 million reads in 6 months. At present it has over 6.5million reads and 181k votes – Wattpadders aren’t stupid!) It was also recommended to me by a fellow author, whose judgement I trust. However, when I began to read about orcs, elves and dwarves I did wonder what I’d let myself in for. You see, I have deliberately steered clear of epic fantasy of this nature for many years. Our young hero, Fletcher, is an orphan raised in a remote area by the village smithy. He has a hard life, is victimised by the bullying son of the town’s wealthiest and most powerful resident. (Minor Spoiler) One market day he makes friends with an old war veteran and comes into possession of the diary of a battle mage, who was researching orc summoning magic. You know what will happen next – Fletcher reads the book and summons a rare demon. Here starts our adventure. The Novice is very derivative of the classics of epic fantasy that have gone before it, yet it is also very well written. In an interview with Teen librarian Matharu talked about a love of history and mythology, but said: “I also used my favourite fantasy tropes in the creation of the Summoner world. These included the magical schools of Earthsea, Harry Potter and Discworld, the multiple races of Lord of the Rings, Skyrim and Redwall, the portals to another world in the Chronicles of Narnia and Stargate, and even the creature companions in Pokémon.”Combining all these influences in one, means Matharu has put his own twists into the genre. In the novel we also find firearms as well as bows, a variety of bladed weapons (I particularly like the use of the kopesh) and his blend of demonology has subtle differences to it from other novels I’ve read.Within the first page you realise that Matharu knows his craft. The narrative is well constructed: there is a perfect balance between scene setting / description and action so the pacing is excellent – it romps along. All the way through the story was absolutely easy to visualise – something I love.A couple of things that struck me as awkward were the fact that the orcs are said to be ruled by a large albino orc and the use of the Pinkertons as a corrupt constabulary. This obvious lack of originality was jarring. The character construction is good. Fletcher and his friends are multi-dimensional, likeable and relatable. The bad guys, at this stage, are more one dimensional but this is a series and we’re bound find out more about them as time progresses.I particularly liked the political intrigue, racial tension and class tensions that existed within Matharu’s world. These added an extra layer of realism and were a nice touch in his world building.I can see this book being loved across a wide age bracket. I would say advanced MG readers through to adults.Matharu gives you what is tried and true with some new twists in one very well constructed book. It’s a rollicking adventure for all ages, with characters you will come love.Four Stars!

Predictable and lacks complexity to engage mature readers By QueenBook I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. If you or you middle school child enjoy Pokemon, this will probably be pretty engaging. There are demons and summoners who are quite like the pairings in the Pokemon world. There is the timeless battle between good and evil. There is a clear perspective about seeing beyond prejudices to the person inside. However, more mature readers are likely to be disappointed by the limited plot and character development. We have seen this predictable plot before -- poor kid gets into magic academy and is awesome, so the privileged kids want to take him down, but he has a core set of good friends who help him overcome! It plodded on and on, and offered very few surprises. As much as this book attempted to forward a positive message about acceptance, it got in its own way by making all the high born people horrible, greedy, and remorseless and casting the poor people as kind, pure, and trustworthy. The characters are all very flat -- they are either good or bad and they don't really grow as anything but practitioners of magic. The hero is an angelic snooze-fest who came preprogrammed with morals and self control. The nuances and flaws that bring characters alive are missing entirely from this story. Again, this is a perfectly adequate high fantasy for the kid who can watch a Pokemon movie, but if you wanted something with more depth, this is a pass. The language and situations are appropriate for all ages.
