Prejudices fly and tempers fly further with bellyaching hilarity mixed with a tender poignancy as relationships ebb and flow. Even the pets get in on the act as AJ's enormous and very illegal hound Vieira and the Major's terrier, Betsy, get their teeth into the action; eagerly, hopefully and always disastrously!

About the Author Nick Brooke was born and raised in various parts of Europe. He has spent the last twenty-something years wondering why he is here, what he should do with himself and, crucially, what nationality he is. After yet another brain-dead night on the graveyard shift making Minis, he decided to become a writer and New Head on the Block is the outcome. He lives in Oxford, Dublin and Tipperary and has few vices that are printable though he supports passionately one of the teams in red and just as passionately, dislikes another.

Rowley-brooke The title says it all; Nick Brooke is a new author (to me) with that rare gift - the ability to write humour well - some of the scenes are redolent of an early Tom Sharpe. Although I'm nearly retired and the book is about 20-somethings I found it profoundly funny and moving. From the start of this laugh-a-page book right to the end Nick keeps the plot and sub-plots twisting and turning. It could be described as 'lad-lit'(as opposed to 'Chick-lit')and is the story of how Chav AJ manages (or not?) to fend off the other members of a select close as they try to prevent him moving in after winning the lottery. Much of the action is seen through the eyes of rich layabout Jack but often the plot rushes away from him. I couldn't put the book down. At first it seems longer than average but there are so many short episodes and the narrative rattles along that I finished it all too soon and can't wait for a sequel. Interspersed with the action involving AJ is the pathos of Jack and his friend Marky as they look back on their teenage fun years in the nineties. This alone presents a beautiful contrast between the still foot-loose and fancy-free Jack and Marky, the man who has responsibilities - a partner and child. Even this is deftly treated with so much humour so that, at the end, I felt completely uplifted which is a big plus in these depressing recessionary times.A fantastic first novel by someone who deserves to go far...I can't wait for his next book.
