These seven short stories trace the childhood memories of a young boy, humorously nicknamed General Custer. The General, optimistic by nature and battered by circumstances, moves from Corvallis, Oregon, to the coastal town of Fairhaven, California. In this patchwork tarpaper town, on the north spit of Humboldt Bay, there are no phones, no indoor toilets, and with mostly absent parents, very few rules for rugged country kids. Tracing General Custer’s intrepid spirit and ardent observations, Kids in the Wind brims with windy salt air, unimaginable adventure, embarrassing discoveries of young love, and a great deal of humor. As the stories unravel they lead you to that age-old-question—why grow up?

Kids in the Wind, by Brad Wethern

Review “More than almost any writer since Mark Twain, Wethern opens a window onto the lives of young kids in a rural, working-class town. Wethern’s spot-on psychology and pitch-perfect dialogue bring into memorable and touching reality the kids’ adventures and their skill at outfoxing the grown-ups.” —Don Marshall, Fletcher Jones Chair of Great Books, Pepperdine University

Seven short stories about childhood memories...and how our innocent youth provides insight to how our lives have formed; fantasy, reality, humor, ideas, moral codes and more. I highly recommend.

This book will remind you what it felt like in your head to be a kid, and have great adventures on seemingly ordinary days. Not a book for kids, just about them and their stories in a sleepy beach town in the 1950's. I know you will enjoy it.

You Gotta Love This Book By deena metzger Kids in the Wind wryly challenges the pervading notion that adults are smarter, more complex and more interesting than kids. Wethern’s characters, though young, are smart, original, audacious and complex. Who knew childhood could be so true, so entirely engaging and so wise. You gotta love these kids. You gotta love this book. You won’t put the book down until you’ve lived it through from cover to cover. Storyteller, Brad Wethern is a master.
