I've often wondered if one of my children had sensory processing disorder or if he was just "sensitive." Sensory is a confusing topic, and there are a lot of terms thrown around, such as sensory integration, sensory integration, sensory seeking...I could never make sense of all of it - until this book!Chock full of information and put together amazingly well, this book describes the sensory systems in detail. The authors discuss what healthy sensory systems look like, and what problems with each sensory system looks like as well. You get the viewpoint of both a therapist and a parent/educator.Are you wondering if your child has a real problem or if he's just going through a phase? Chapter 9 gives you 3 signs to look for, red flag behaviors, and a handy checklist! My very favorite part of this book is the activities section! There are several sensory activities for every sensory system! These activities look amazing, and I know I'll be referencing this section a lot! Finally, the cheat sheets and index of behaviors are great. Have a child who always uses the "outside voice" or covers their ears when there is noise or dislikes being dirty? You can find the answers you're looking for quickly in the index. This is an invaluable resource for all parents and educators!

This book seriously explains the issues in such an organized way so it is easy to understand. I love that it is told from 2 perspectives... the therapist so I can read the technical way things work and the parent perspective so I feel like I am not alone! I highly recommend this book to parents who suspect a loved one may have sensory issues. I am also a teacher and I as I am reading this book I am making lots of connections with experiences I have had with students in the past. Very powerful book for teachers whether you have students with diagnosed sensory issues or not (because they are in your class even if you don't have a diagnosis.)

By Deetdewgirl This book is like the Sensory Bible! I LOVE how it explains Sensory Processing, gives TONS of great sensory activities, and the additional resources are insanely handy for everyday life! My son has SPD so I'm no newbie to understanding sensory theory, but I found myself learning even more and finding ways to communicate it to others in a way that makes sense to everyone! I thought I'd seen every sensory activity under the sun, but I was wrong! This book is a blessing to ALL kids, not just those with SPD!
