From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1—A picture book with a rhyming text, bright colors, and plenty of action. It presents officers of both genders and various ethnicities on the job—as head of a team or crew, a detective, or a patrolman preventing crime. It also introduces canine assistants, patrolmen on horseback, and officers assisting with traffic control. The cartoon art was digitally rendered. This brief, introductory look at law enforcement makes a fine companion to the author and illustrator's Firefighters: Speeding! Spraying! Saving! (Marshall Cavendish, 2007).—Mary Elam, Forman Elementary School, Plano, TX Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

They're informative and they rhyme. Great for curious two and three year olds.Police is one of the best of hers that I've seen. I have tons of books in my library about firefighters, but few about policemen. Children, sadly, need so much more information about what police do and how they might affect their lives. Hubbell's book does this beautifully. As I turned the board pages, I came across many more practical examples of a policeman's life than I expected. Chasing burglars. Searching with dogs. Cops riding horses (clop, clop!) Directing traffic. Riding in motorcycles and police boats. This book has a real importance for very young children. It could set straight the negative attitude kids may pick up from their parents, due to their parents' personal fears. A three year old sits in the car seat, a police car drives by, and the child's parent automatically says, "Oh, cop." What's a kid to think? Sharing this book would help a parent correct that misconception. It could help to reassure children that they live in a safer world than they knew, and that police do many things to try to keep it safe.

Is a very simple book that introduces pre-reading skills and, hopefully, will encourage an interest in reading with its story in rhyme about a high-interest topic, police officers. A confident reader could certainly tackle this tale with ease, but it's a board book and meant for the child who has an interest in books, developing one, or is an emergent reader. The book starts out with a rush of activity as a squad car leaves the police station. "Wooohhh-ahh! / Woooohhh-ahh! Wooohhh-ahh! / Police rush off to start their day. / Who knows what jobs will come their way!" This board book lets children know many of the things that the police do, including what the fact they have search and find dogs. The artwork is most definitely bright, colorful, and appealing. This is a board book with heavy pages that can withstand the use of the littlest children. Some of the Board Buddies books have only one or two words per page, but "Police" has a little story that fans of police definitely will enjoy. When you introduce books and readings to your young child or infant (I did so when mine was an infant), you'll find Board Buddy books are fun and engaging. My daughter likes that it shows the police with different animals - dogs and horses. It also shows different forms of transportation - cars, bikes, motorcycles and even a boat. While most of the police are white men, there are a couple of women and one man of color. I wish they would have been a little more diverse in this aspect.Overall, it's a cute book and doesn't stereotype. There are no cops eating donuts.
