There's a new genre rising from the underground. Its name: BIZARRO. For years, readers have been asking for a category of fiction dedicated to the weird, crazy, cult side of storytelling that has become a staple in the film industry (with directors such as David Lynch, Takashi Miike, Tim Burton, and Lloyd Kaufman) but has been largely ignored in the literary world, until now. The Bizarro Starter Kit features short novels and story collections by ten of the leading authors in the bizarro genre: Brian Allen Carr, Violet LeVoit, David W. Barbee, Shane McKenzie, J. David Osborne, Kirsten Alene, Robert Devereaux, Douglas Hackle, Eric Hendrixson, and Nick Antosca.

This Red collection gives a wide range of what Bizarro is capable of. Some of it is weird, some of it is psycho, and some of it is sexy. Bizarro is unafraid to be creative. I'm sure anyone reading this book with find an author they will like. Personally, I'm in love with Douglas Hackle (Terror Sardines In Terror Sauce was hilarious!) and Shane Mckenzie (loved the Kaiju Kid). There are some classics in here that I'm proud to have on my new and growing Bizarro shelf. :)

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A General Synopsis of a Rare Star Wars-Related Book By Cameron B. Clark I'm giving this book three stars as a neutral rating to only provide information about it, not a critique. This now-rare paperback was published by Quest Publications in 1983, the same year that Return of the Jedi came out, and was co-authored by Norman L. Geisler and J. Yutaka Amano. Both later co-authored The Reincarnation Sensation [1987] and The Infiltration of the New Age [1989]. The book is 4.25 x 7 inches in size with a black "outer space with stars" front cover and the title in silver caps; an attractive little book, 61 pages long. The Table of Contents is as follows: 1) Is There a Religion of the Force?, 2) What is the Religion of the Force?, 3) What is George Lucas's Religion?, 4) Is Star Wars a Christian Allegory?, 5) What is the Source of the Force?, 6) What is the Gospel According to Lucas?, 7) What Makes the Difference?, 8) What Difference Does it Make?, and Notes. The Notes section at the back provides the bibliography, showing a reliance on the Ballantine Books novelizations of the films by George Lucas (Star Wars [1976]), Donald Glut (The Empire Strikes Back [1980]), and James Kahn (Return of the Jedi [1983]). Interviews in Time, Dallas Times Herald, Newsweek, Dallas Morning News, and Rolling Stone are used for quotes and information along with the following books: Skywalking: The Life and Films of George Lucas [1983] by Dale Pollock, The Gospel from Outer Space [1983] by Robert Short, The Teachings of Don Juan [1968] and Tales of Power [1974] by Carlos Castaneda, The Don Juan Papers [1980] edited by Richard de Mille, History and Christianity [1983] by John W. Montgomery, and Death of a Guru [1977] by Rabindranath R. Majaraj, with Dave Hunt.Chapter 1 establishes that there is a religion of the Force, albeit fictional, the term "religion" being used three times in the first Star Wars film (Episode IV: A New Hope). It is then shown with examples that "the Jedi beliefs have all the characteristics of a religion" (pg. 8). Chapter 2 looks at the nature of the force, the importance of faith in it [with deep commitment and concentration] for tapping into its extraordinary power, the temptations of the dark side, and the role of immortality. Chapter 3 looks at Lucas's religious beliefs based on quotes from him. It basically shows that Lucas believes in some sort of supreme being he has called "God" and that he believes in the importance of moral values. He is quoted as saying he was trying to express in Star Wars "that there is a God and there is both a good side and a bad side. You have a choice between them, but the world works better if you're on the good side" (pg. 20, quoted from Time magazine [May 23, 1983, pg. 68]). Chapter 4 responds to Robert Short's book The Gospel from Outer Space which sees a Christian allegory in Star Wars. The authors show some obvious similarities "between the religion of the Jedi and the religion of Jesus," listing seven, but then give a longer list of ten crucial differences, ending the chapter with the following: "The Force is an 'eastern' pantheistic view, and God is a 'western' theistic concept. And, as Kipling put it, 'East is east and west is west, and never the twain shall meet.'"Chapter 5 points to Carlos Castaneda's Tales of Power as the source that heavily influenced Lucas's concept of the Force, referring to a quote from Dale Pollock's book which makes this point. The similarities between Star Wars and Castaneda's book are given before Castaneda's similarities with Eastern religious traditions are stated along with his similarities with the Occult (both sections using Richard de Mille's book). Chapter 6 seems to tie into the topic of Chapter 3, showing the moral and religious messages in Star Wars. Chapter 7 basically contrasts Christianity with the religion of the Force, reemphasizing some of the crucial differences pointed out in Chapter 4, each section title showing a contrast: Force vs. Father, Feeling vs. Thinking, Self Effort vs. Divine Help, and All Winners vs. Some Losers. Chapter 8, the last one, quotes from Maharaji's book to answer the question "What difference does it make?"This small book will find favor with some Christians who find little to no compatibility between the spiritual ideas in Star Wars and those in Christianity. However, for those Christians who may acknowledge many of the points made in this book but who still believe that the films can be used to teach spiritual and moral themes that are compatible with Christianity, it is recommended that one look to some of the newer books by Christians who share this perspective (and take into consideration all six films) such as Star Wars Jesus by Caleb Grimes and The Gospel According to Star Wars by John C. McDowell.

This is a contemporary novel set in a small town, a funny, heart-warming story. The small town comes alive in this amusing tale of small scale conflict. Charlie Callahan is a retired baseball player living in Hunters Crossing, Ohio with his wife, Lorena and two boys, Rob, a college student, and Drew, a senior in high school. Charlie, a coach for the local high school football team, is quite happy with his life until things start to change; an old girlfriend comes to town, the adult daughter he’d never met wants to get to know him, and a silly argument with the Mayor’s wife after a football game turns into a more serious power play. When what he thought to be only a minor incident threatens to turn his life upside down, Charlie is forced to change his passive attitude. When the small town is taken by storm, sides are taken. Some people who knew him for years desert him, while new friends come to support him. In the end, as Shakespeare said, ’All’s well that ends well’.

Great read By Rebba I like to read women's fiction and this is the story of a small town, with original, interesting characters and a dynamic flow of events. Surprisingly it follows the story of a man, not a woman. Charlie Callahan and through him the small town and a lot of colorful characters create the entire picture

It's Christmas again, and Melanie Travis barely has time to pencil in some holiday festivities. Especially once she finds herself making a list of murder suspects - and checking it twice... This year, all Melanie wants for Christmas is a dull moment. Between her son Davey, her teaching job, and showing her Standard Poodle puppy, Eve, there just aren't enough hours in the day. But when Davey's usual bus driver, Henry Pruitt, disappears and is replaced by a surly, pierced, twentysomething, Melanie is concerned. The elderly, amiable Henry was a friend to all in the neighborhood, so she decides to check on him.... only to find that he died two days earlier, under suspicious circumstances. As if that weren't bad enough, Henry's two Golden Retrievers are now bereft of both master and home. Melanie can't just abandon them, so she brings them to her Aunt Peg, the most stubborn woman on the planet, who's now determined to find out the truth about Henry's death, no matter what it takes. Soon, the indomitable Aunt Peg has Melanie leashed to another murder investigation. And unless she sniffs out this Scrooge of a killer fast, a lump of coal in her stocking may not be the worst thing Melanie gets this Christmas...

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Strong writing, great character By booksforabuck Melanie Travis has enough to do over the holiday season without worrying about murder. She has a son to shop for, an expecting sister-in-law, a poodle to prepare for all-important showings, a girlfriend to straighten out on buying a respectable dog, and a relationship to get right. When the favorite schoolbus driver is found dead, all Melanie intends to do is make sure his dogs get a proper home. But getting the dogs the right home gets complicated when the driver's daughters roll into town--intent on putting the dogs up for auction (because one of their parents' was a champion, the daughters assumes that the dogs must be highly valuable). The only way Melanie's Aunt Peg figures to get rid of the daughters is to solve the mystery herself. Of course, Aunt Peg's way of solving mysteries turns out to involve a lot of sending Melanie out to do the work.Author Laurien Berenson does an excellent job combining an interesting character with humor and mystery. Melanie, with her relationship issues, and her obsession with her standard poodles draws the reader in largely because she is a typical suburban mom--caught between a job, her child, and a hobby that demands so much of her time. In Berenson books, the mystery plays second fiddle--it isn't that it isn't being worked on, it's just that the mystery has to come after Melanie takes care of her son and her poodles. In JINGLE BELL BARK, Berenson makes the combination click. I've enjoyed a number of other novels in this series, but BARK seems to put togther the combination of character, humor, and strong writing even better than the earlier novels. Berenson's writing hooks the reader early and keeps us involved with the story.I have no hesitation in recommending JINGLE BELL BARK to anyone looking for a light mystery.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. delightful amateur sleuth By A Customer In Greenwich, Connecticut, Melanie Travis is a special needs tutor at the posh private Howard Academy. She enjoys her work there, but her passion is showing and breeding French Poodles. Her son Davy enthusiastically helps her with the canines when he can. When she takes her son to the school bus, Melanie is surprised that Henry the long time driver has been replaced by Annie. She visits Henry to see if he is okay only to learn that he recently died from a heart attack.Melanie sees Golden Retrievers inside of Henry's home so feeling compassion and not wanting the dogs to mourn alone, she takes them to her Aunt Peg, a professional breeder and canine lover. The two female relatives learn through the grapevine that Henry was poisoned. His two daughters arrive planning to sell their father's animal companions on E-bay. They also refuse to leave town until their father's killer is caught. Peg wants these coldhearted adult children be gone so she investigates the homicide to expedite their departure, not realizing the danger her decision poses to her and her niece.JINGLE BELL BARK is a delightful tale that amateur sleuth fans will enjoy especially the canine caper crowd. Laurien Berenson enables readers to glimpse inside the world of dogs through the loving way aunt and niece nurture their beloved barking family members. The audience, like Peg, will find it impossible to determine who the killer is because suspects abound with motives and opportunities. This leads to a surprising climax as Peg and Melanie try to take a bite out of crime before they are nipped permanently.Harriet Klausner

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Best Yet! By Poodleland I have read all of the Melanie Travis mysteries, and this is definitely the best one yet! It's written with Ms Berenson's usual humor and knowledge of her subject matter. Those who love showing dogs, especially Poodles, and a good light-hearted mystery will enjoy this book immensely. Can't wait for the next addition to the series.

It was a delightful read following Luke, a single dad with a delightful little daughter named Lisa, and Kim, his girlfriend from high school, in their journey to seeing if they could put their pasts behind them and find a future together. It is a heartwarming story showing how God can change lives and that He a God of second chances. This is another one from this author that I certainly recommend.

Honestly, this is the first romance centered novels I read, and let me tell you, it will not be the last! At times while reading this book, I has to put it down and start fangirling for a good few minutes.Writing:I absolutely love Cecilia Dowdy's writing style. It flows onto the page and is so complex, and easily understandable.Characters:I truly loved the main characters; Kim and Luke. The one thing I noticed, is that Luke spoke his mind. You didn't have to wait half the book for him to speak his mind to Kim, and I really liked that. Another thing, sometimes Luke spoke his mind a wee bit to much. I'm really surprised some of the things he said didn't infuriate Kim; it would have me. Thankfully, this was rare and didn't bother me at all.Overall:Wow! This was an incredible book! I'm really glad this is what I started out with in the romance genre. I completely devoured this book. I really wish there was a physical copy of this book; I would totally buy it.Recommendations:I would recommend this to girls that are mature, and 12+. It has minor content, only memories though. It is purely Christian, so nothing to worry about. If you're looking for a warm, cozy, love able, adorable story, look no further.*I received a free, digital copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion at all.

Kim has moved back to her hometown, and so has her high school boyfriend, Luke. This is a great story about second chances. I felt like I got to know the characters and see into their relationships and their motivations. I don't always feel that way when reading a novella. I liked the way faith was brought into their relationship and decisions. The setting -- how could I not like a bakery setting and a heroine that bakes incredible cookies?! And the recipe for her famous vanilla cookies is given at the end of the story. Gotta love that! There are just a few places where the wrong name was used (editing misses), but I knew who they were talking about and it didn't bother me.This is the first story I've read by this author. It definitely won't be the last, because since reading this story, I've already bought another of her books! So, clearly, I would recommend this novella!I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Then, when I saw it a second time, I was really annoyed. So, I skipped to the end of the book and wrote this comment. Don't get this book!!!!!!!!!!
