Penguin on Vacation, by Salina Yoon

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1-Penguin is back and this time he's going somewhere tropical. He needs a break from the snow, so he packs his suitcase, waves good-bye to his grandpa, and hops on an ice floe to a beach vacation. He soon learns that he cannot ski, sled, or skate on sand. Luckily, he meets Crab, who shows him all the fun one can have at the beach-building sand castles, playing beach ball, climbing coconut trees, surfing, etc. "But all vacations come to an end," so Penguin heads home, but he soon discovers, to his delight, that Crab has come along. After all, crabs need vacations, too, and Penguin shows his friend all the fun things to do in his snowy home. At the end of his visit, Crab writes that he "shell return" (yes, on a shell) and one day he does. Yoon's crisp and clean Photoshop illustrations add depth, whimsy, and action to the text. Penguin in a stripped bathing suit circa 1920 and Crab wearing a scarf and mittens should not be missed. Yoon spins a simple and enjoyable story of friendship and adventure that will work well in storytime or for individual sharing.-Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NHα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist You wouldn’t think a penguin would get sick and tired of snow and ice, but that’s exactly what happens in this follow-up to Penguin and Pinecone (2012). As snow continues to fall from the sky, Penguin decides, “I need a vacation.” The perfect choice for an Antarctic dweller? Something tropical. And so off he goes on an ice floe with a beach ball, surfing his way to paradise. Flip-flop-wearing Penguin meets Crab, who shows him the ins and outs of beach fun, but alas, “all vacations come to an end.” When Crab decides he needs a vacation, too, Penguin returns the hosting favor. Silly fun for kids ready for their own break from routine—and winter. Preschool-Grade 1. --Ann Kelley

We'll get the 4th one when it comes out this summer. This is the best in the series. It's so cute. It's about a penguin who wants to go on vacation somewhere different...somewhere tropical. So he goes to the beach but doesn't know how to play in the sand. He meets a crab who befriends him and shows him how to have fun at the beach. Then crab visits penguin in the Antarctic. It's a tale of friendship. Very cute. My daughter wants to read it every night and has it memorized. I first saw this book at the library one week before we were going on vacation last year (when she was 3 1/2) and thought it might help her understand what vacation is. In the book, when their respective vacations are over it says "All vacations must come to an end. It was time for penguin/crab to go home." I actually used that line when we had to go home because my daughter was crying. As soon as I said that she stopped crying and went to the car.

Sweet Friendship Story By MommaE This book has adorable illustrations, and chronicles the travels and new friendship of a South Pole penguin and a crab from the beach. The story of friendship is sweet, and my 2 yo loves the humorous illustrations. Definitely a great book to read after such a long winter!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. We love this book By E. Ervin What a cute story! It is just as sweet and cute as could be. I love board books for little people and this one is great. Our little ones like it a lot. They especially like penguin stories and this one has such a good story in it, too, about being friends and sharing experiences. I don't think you can go wrong with this penguin series and being a board book makes it all that much better. I love the friendship aspects of penguin and crab, too. Great book for little people.

I would recommend this book in an instant..... ' 5 Stars: 'Excellent easy read - ideal holiday novel. The build up into a thoroughly complicated and ridiculous situation is worthy of Tom Sharpe.' It’s been a tough year for Bob and Joan Younghusband. Bob’s been made redundant from his plumbing sales job selling loos and lock nuts, and just as they’re about to get away from it all, Joan loses her beloved father, too. Deciding the sunny climes of the Med are just what they need, the Younghusbands head for France in their hired camper. But every dream has its price, and this one comes with Joan’s alcoholic stepmother who throws the ultimate spanner in the works. Then there’s the shocking revelation when Bob and Joan stay with old friends that could rock their relationship to the core, and turn their dream trip into the holiday from hell. Tailed by an inspector of the French Police Nationale and a Glaswegian gangster by the unlikely name of Stephan, Bob and Joan have to find a way out of their home-made nightmare, or it won’t just be their plans for a relaxing break that go down the toilet. Murder, mayhem, gangsters and badly spoken French, this dark comedy has it all.

A story of a vacation gone very wrong, Bob and Joan head off after Joan’s father’s funeral in an attempt to re-ignite their marriage. What they delve into is a nightmare of death, destruction and mayhem when they become intertwined with a dangerous killer and a drug smuggling operation.Complete with police interrogation and humor ranging from slapstick to macabre, this story is intriguing enough to cause the reader to keep turning the pages to see what will happen next. The plot is well thought out and the characters are well developed. The author did a very good job of making the story line realistic.A great book for those of you that enjoy a funny crime story!-Diamante Lavendar, author of Breaking The Silence

An enjoyable read and quite funny in a cynical, world weary way I can identify with - I get the scottish accent title name joke now. Even though it's not really in my usual genre I read the sample first (gets you as far as Dover customs) from a friends recommendation then bought full eBook of Oui Trip on Amazon UK. I could see this in my head as funny TV film dramedy very easily, and better than a lot of the stuff that is on ITV. Oh, and I will never eat Asparagus in the same way now!

From School Library Journal Gr 1–3—A highly illustrated chapter book for newly independent readers. The excitable little owl, Eva, explains how, after her teacher reads a spooky story, she sees a real ghost. Unfortunately, no one seems to believe her. Along with her best friend, Lucy, she goes on a ghost hunt in order to get the evidence she needs. The narrative is written as short diary entries on lined notebook-style pages. There are word balloons with dialogue as well as several sidebars with checklists and a questionnaire that Eva develops. She could not put the book down, she was so curious to know what was going to happen. Any book that can bring out that kind of enthusiasm in my little reader gets a 5 star rating. Since there are only 2 books in this series so far we will definitely be exploring other series from the Branches Book line.

Review "This is the first book I have read by Megan Slayer. I liked it very much!" -LeeA.P."...overall it was a good story." -Jennifer Wood

From the Author This story came out of actual experience. The speeding ticket and the information learned afterwards helped to create the plot for Home to Cedarwood. I also have to thank my fellow author, Cheryl Dragon for encouraging me to give Jordan and Colin their story. Once I started writing Home to Cedarwood, the story flowed fast and furious. There will be more in this series, the Single Fathers Society. Ripples in Cedarwood, featuring Farin and Steve Moore is next. A swimmer and the book store owner. Grin. Rainbow Over Cedarwood follows Ripples and features Colt Harrison, a diner owner, and Ashley Willis, another teacher in the Cedarwood school system. Look for those soon!I hope you enjoy the book!

About the Author When she's not writing the stories in her head, Megan Slayer can be found luxuriating in her hot tub with her two vampire Cabana boys, Luke and Jeremy. She has the tendency to run a tad too far with her muse, so she has to hide in the head of her alter ego, but the boys don't seem to mind. When she's not obsessing over her whip collection, she can be found picking up her kidlet from school. She enjoys writing in all genres, but writing about men in love suits her fancy best. The cabana boys are willing to serve, unless she needs them. She always need them. So be nice to Javier or he will bite--on command. She also masquerades under the name Wendi Zwaduk and is published through Loose ID Publishing, Liquid Silver Books, MLR Press, Resplendence Publishing, Totally Bound Publishing, Ellora's Cave, Changeling Press and Decadent Publishing.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Our Doris by Charles Heathcote By Jay Cole Review copy supplied by author. Our Doris should come with a warning to avoid food and drink while reading, because if you ‘get it’, this book is sprinkled with moments that might literally choke you with laughter.Written as a series of monologues, it introduces Our Doris, a character somewhat reminiscent of Hyacinth Bucket of the British sitcom, Keeping Up Appearances, perhaps a distant cousin. Our Doris is spawned with the same devilishly-haughty mix of faux-superiority and the assumption of perfect manners, a blend which transforms an ordinary high maintenance woman into walking purgatory. The tale is told in the voice of Doris’ husband, Our Harold, a paragon of forbearance not without his own quirks. The elderly pair have been married for more than fifty years, and in a different reality, you might picture Harold as being perfectly justified in calmly and honestly stating, “And that Your Honor, is why I killed her.”Our Doris is obsessed with her garden and its upcoming placement in the local garden safari, a neighborhood affair more important than national defense. Doris will go to any lengths to showcase herself as a “horticulturist visionary” and end up the winner. Naturally, she views her competition, the members of the local ladies group, as wholly unworthy of comparison with her skills, and she’s not shy about jockeying her way through the minefield of British propriety with insults and blackmail to maintain her advantage. Throughout, the saintly-patient Our Harold grudgingly assists, deftly avoids, or unashamedly warns the local lads about Doris’ manic and maniacal plans. And of course, lifelong marriage has also shown him the definitive advantages of escape through heavy drinking. The Good: The authentic feel of this slice of British life is truly marvelous, and the laughs are genuine and liberally supplied. The Bad: There is no correct answer when an author attempts to balance authenticity against readability for a broad audience. Our Doris is likely a fast and wonderfully easy read in Great Britain, but ‘across the pond,’ it may take a bit of googling to understand the British slang, colloquialisms, etc. that have no common reference. Naturally, some of the humor is dependent on such understanding; for example, one reference to Ben Nevis, which is a mountain, not a person. Ergo, this is not an effortless read for the author’s American cousins, but even with this caveat on readability, if you love British humor as I do, Our Doris is ‘simply lovely.’Rating: Four Stars, and I almost feel guilty deducting one for readability.

So reminded of me how my mother used to speak to my father. Really funny and entertaining. Never a dull moment with Doris and arold. X definitely recommend this one for the train or plane. Handy size for bag.Nice cuppa and morning coffee!
