2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Angry Birds are back for more graphic novel fun By Wayne A McCoy The Angry Birds are back for more fun in 'Angry Birds Comics, Vol. 2: When Pigs Fly.' It's about as fun as the first one, and definitely good for younger readers who are fans of the game. This time around, there are mysterious green eggs, pigs on stilts, and of course, the titles flying pigs. The birds try out alternate nest materials (like stone or water) with some dismal results. There are weird shells, strange berry juice, and a broken sling shot. The pigs try to steal the eggs, and the birds always manage to stay one step ahead of them. It's cartoony violence like the game is. The pigs are pretty dim, and the birds are pretty silly. It's got a slapstick style found in cartoons, and the colors are bright. Once again, the bottom of the pages seem to have some sort of flip cartoon, but since I'm reviewing a digital copy, I can't make the pages flip fast enough. If you're buying a copy for kids, they might have more fun with a paper version so they can flip the pages and watch the birds fly into the pigs.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this fun graphic novel.

Years of British-led failures have taken its toll on Jacob Murray. Standing alone amidst the aftermath of yet another unfathomable defeat, his thoughts turn north to his wife Maggie and the perilous gulf of wilderness that stands between them like the French abbitas at Fort Carillon. He would pack his grief and exhaustion and head north with his son James, if not for the cruel unyielding attention of a British officer bent on his ruin. For the time being, he fights back his longing and bides his time while the trails slowly shed their winter cover and waits for an opportunity to present itself. Meanwhile Maggie is forced to rely on the kindness of a French priest to keep her safe while she still searches for her family. The sudden, chance arrival of three French brothers changes her course. She now entrusts her life to a stranger as they decide to head north. The fifth novel in the award-winning series, The Gauntlet Runner, Heights of Hell is a fast-paced story that plunges readers into the vast, unexplored forests of 1758 New York and the doomed defeat of another British army. Experience the courage of the Black Watch, the near death of the vaunted Robert Rogers and the raw emotion consuming both Jacob and Maggie as their paths seemingly moves them in the opposite direction. Crazy good book, this whole series is pretty good By Kevin Crazy good book, this whole series is pretty good, but you can really tell the author's writing skill level has increased with each book, definitely hitting the professional level in Book 5. Hopefully there will be more to come. Love the detail, some authors gloss over the detail, some folks find it boring to read, but I think it really puts you back in time.

The pages are thicker than most books and are coated so that they are quite difficult to rip. This type of book is a great transition from board books working towards books with paper pages. I would recommend this book as well as the "Goodnight Daniel Tiger".

The Mysterious Stranger, by Mark Twain

From the Back Cover In his last years Mark Twain had become a respected literary figure whose opinions were widely sought by the press. He had also suffered a series of painful physical, economic, and emotional losses. The Mysterious Stranger, published posthumously in 1916 and belonging to Twain's "dark" period, belies the popular image of the affable American humorist. In this antireligious tale, Twain denies the existence of a benign Providence, a soul, an afterlife, and even reality itself. As the Stranger in the story asserts, "nothing exists; all is a dream".

About the Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He is most noted for his novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "the Great American Novel."

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. A different face for Twain By Luxx Mishley In 1590 three Austrian boys - Nikolaus, Seppi, and Theodor (the narrator) - meet a mysterious stranger in the countryside near their small village. This stranger possesses strange powers, and delights the boys not only with his magic tricks (such as lighting their pipe with a breath or creating a miniature civilization from dust), but with his stories and observations regarding the human race. Though he identifies himself as an angel by the name of Satan he assures the boy that he is merely the nephew of the more famous figure, and gains their trust and their friendship. The boys continue a strange and often taxing relationship with the supernatural individual, and though they are unnaturally sedated by his physical presence his influence on their thoughts and morality creates a kind of lasting damage to their individual psyches.Mark Twain's narrative views on religion, faith, and humanity can be found in any number of his works, though I myself am only familiar with those presented in The Diaries of Adam and Eve, Helpful Hints for Good Living, and Letters from Earth. However, his critical presentation in The Mysterious Stranger is much darker than any I have read by him before. Although the story is told by Theodor, the narrative itself revolves around Satan and Satan's view of humanity. Much of the narrative itself is occupied with the sermons he delivers to the boys, which are aggressive and critical towards humanity, and often towards the morality the boys themselves are taught to respect. The kinds of ideas presented can leave readers wondering whether the character of Satan is really the nephew or the dominant figure, and allows them to question the motives of the foremost character in the novel. Is he truly a benevolent spiritual figure? Is he an evil entity set on wreaking havoc in the small community? And why, in light of their own doubts and misgivings about him, do the boys continue to associate with - indeed, seek out if possible - Satan? The Mysterious Stranger is not the Mark Twain of Huck Finn, or even the Mark Twain of Helpful Hints; here is a much darker Twain intent not on amusing his audiences, but on expressing feelings of aggression and anger towards a mass that so often seems to perpetuate its own misery. While I found Satan's frequent aggrandizing sermons to be incredibly tedious I appreciated the glimpse of Twain that I had not seen before.

26 of 28 people found the following review helpful. subversive & thrilling By xtina Provocative and subversive, if you've ever had issues with Christian theology, you will certainly be drawn to this novella. At the end of the story, the character Satan manages to sum up, in one paragraph, with biting eloquence, some of the most serious theological problems with Christianity. It is the sort of passage that you read and then immediately bang your head against the wall because it's exactly what you always wanted to say and you wish YOU had been the one to write it down:"Strange, indeed, that you should not have suspected that your universe and its contents were only dreams, visions, fiction! Strange, because they are so frankly and hysterically insane -- like all dreams: a God who could make good children as easily as bad, yet preferred to make bad ones; who could have made every one of them happy, yet never made a single happy one; who made them prize their bitter life, yet stingily cut it short; who gave his angels eternal happiness unearned, yet required his other children to earn it; who gave his angels painless lives, yet cursed his other children with biting miseries and maladies of mind and body; who mouths justice and invented hell -- mouths mercy and invented hell -- mouths Golden Rules, and forgiveness multiplied by seventy times seven, and invented hell; who mouths morals to other people and has none himself; who frowns upon crimes, yet commits them all; who created man without invitation, then tries to shuffle the responsibility for man's acts upon man, instead of honorably placing it where it belongs, upon himself; and finally, with altogether divine obtuseness, invites this poor, abused slave to worship him!..."

By darragh o'donoghue this volume spans the length of Mark Twain's career, and contains some of his most famous shorter works, which all centre on the subject of Money. 'The Celebrated jumping frog of Calaveras County' is the most perfect tall tale in the English language, three flawless pages about Jim Smiley and the bizarre sidelines he would investigate to win a bet, any bet, written in a miraculous mid-19th century California vernacular. If that isn't enough, Twain tops it with the best closing paragraph of any work I have ever read ever.'The $1,000,000 Bank note' is almost surreal, or Marxist, the story of a derelict made an unwitting guinea pig by two elderly millionaires, curious to see what would happen to an honest but poor man in the possession of such an impractible note. The frightening fetishistic power of currency structures a somewhat creepily benevolent narrative, and the opening paragraphs audaciously cram a novel's worth of misfortune.'The Man who corrupted Hadleyburg' is the masterpiece here, at once an unforgiving morality tale about the temptation of money on an incorruptible town, and a satire on the crippling effect of bogus social respectability. Twain's irony is at its most relentless here, mixing anger at elite hypocrisy with distaste for the savage mob mentality. The scenes of public justice are hilarious but terrifying; the unnamed man taking monstrous revenge on a whole town for a personal slight, exposing its shams by an experiment, could well be Twain himself. The same could be said of the hero of his novella 'The Mysterious Stranger', Twain's last, posthumously published work. In this, an angel, Satan, nephew of his infernal namesake, comes to a late 16th century Austrian mountain village and systematically exposes the murderous herd instincts, moral deceptions and shabby pretensions of the human condition. Everything - war, religion, society, justice, family, human aspiration, childhood innocence - is ground down with misanthropic, sub-Swiftian satire.'Stranger' is not an easy book to like. As an historical novel, it is an utter failure, with no attempt to understand the mindset, never mind the language, idiom or customs of an alien culture. As an allegory for the contemporary America in which Twain was writing, the book is indispensible, insightful, brave, bracing, honest, incredibly prescient, but monotonous, flatly written and exhausting. As a supernatural fable, the book has little sense of wonder or of the unknown, but in its story of a devil wreaking subversive havoc on a socially repressive culture by playing on their hypocritical terms, 'Stranger' does look forward to Bulgakov's more successful 'The Master and Margarita'.

By Ashalka John works at a petting zoo, and when he see the lions there being abused he works very hard and manages to save them. Markas, a young lion shifter, attracted to & saved by John, and now able to shift. As John & Markas get to know each other as they work together to set up a sanctuary for lions & lion shifters and to save more of them from the greedy & dangerous zoo owner. This was an interesting take on lion shifters and how they are treated. I enjoyed the way these two interacted with each other and also how Markas had to step up as the leader of his little pride. Looking forward to seeing what happens in the upcoming books in this series.

Megan did a great job of conveying why John would have trust issues, and I liked how she didn't have him dive right into the instant love when he learned Markas was a shifter and attracted to him. I also thought Markus was a well-written character. He was new to shifting and Ms. Slayer was careful not to have him jumping straight into acting like a human. The sex between the two was hot but tender. I did find a couple of final line edit misses but nothing that messed up my enjoyment of the story. Bravo!

Since You've Been Gone, by Morgan Matson

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Emily is bereft when her bubbly and energetic best friend, Sloane, leaves without saying goodbye at the beginning of what should have been the best summer of their lives. Sloane was the one who planned their adventures and befriended everyone they met, and Emily is feeling more than a little lost when a letter arrives from Sloane containing a list of tasks for Emily to do over the summer. Hoping that the list contains clues to Sloane's whereabouts that will become clear as she crosses items off, Emily tackles the challenges, making new friends, overcoming her fears, and gaining confidence as the summer goes on. Readers will root for Emily as she gets a new job, skinny dips, uses the fake ID Sloane got for her, crashes a wedding, and kisses a stranger. Though marred by a few leaps of logic and the occasionally clunky turn of phrase, this is a thoroughly enjoyable book with a terrific romantic subplot and an ending that ties up the loose ends believably and satisfyingly. It will appeal to readers who loved Maureen Johnson's 13 Little Blue Envelopes (HarperCollins, 2005).—Stephanie Klose, Library Journal

From Booklist Imagine the ominous stillness of waking up one day to find that your best friend and constant companion is suddenly gone—family and all. Emily and Sloane shared every thought via text ever since Sloane moved into town, and Emily became the faithful sidekick to her fearless personality. Now, without Sloane as her navigator, Emily is stuck with no friends, no job, and no plans, with only her self-absorbed playwright parents and adventuresome younger brother, Beckett (one of the many literary references sprinkled throughout the narrative). Then a to-do list arrives in the mail from Sloane, and Emily begins a transformative summer that she hopes will lead her to her friend. In Matson’s gentle portrayal, Emily’s completion of the list propels her to participate in her own life, stand in no one’s shadow, have a voice, and value that which makes her whole. The author of Second Chance Summer (2012), among other titles, creates a time-and-space experience for teens that might actually interrupt their social-media convos until they’re finished reading. Grades 7-12. --Gail Bush

Review "Matson’s characters feel like familiar, comforting friends.... It’s a sweet, leisurely read with a title that, thanks to Kelly Clarkson, begs to be shouted out loud." (Publishers Weekly)"A winning blend of touching moments, memorable characters and situational humor takes readers to a surprising revelation at the story’s end." (Kirkus)"Readers will root for Emily.... A thoroughly enjoyable book with a terrific romantic subplot and an ending that ties up the loose ends believably and satisfyingly." (School Library Journal)Morgan Matson "creates a time-and-space experience for teens that might actually interrupt their social media convos until they’re finished reading." (Booklist)"Matson writes with humor and the rare ability to outline a character in a few, well-chosen words.... This engaging story is a solid choice for both school and public libraries." (VOYA)"We fell crazy in love with these characters." (Justine Magazine)"After reading Since You’ve Been Gone, I’m placing Morgan Matson on my list of Authors Whose Books I’ll Always Read." By Irish of Ticket to anywhere I love Morgan Matson's books and have have been eagerly waiting for Since You've Been Gone since it was first announced. Since You've Been Gone is told in the style that you would expect from Matson with very real characters and issues and the pages just fly by. I loved Emily and related to her a lot as she embarked on her journey of finding herself after her best friend, Sloane, disappears. I enjoyed her new friendship with Frank, Collins, and Dawn. I especially loved Collins and his adorkable quirks and wish there had been more scenes with him. I also thought that Frank was really sweet and the opposite of every bad boy attitude filled male lead that seems to fill books these days. The plot was a cute contemporary as Emily attempts to check off various tasks sent to her on a list from Sloane. As such, Since You've Been Gone is a little less serious that Matson's other books. While there are issues and things that Emily needs to work on they aren't as soul hitting as say the events in Second Chance Summer. My only real complaint is that it was over too soon and there were still some story threads that felt a little unfinished. Overall though I think that fans of Matson's books will enjoy this one as well.

Emily is used to being known as Sloane's friend. Following in Sloane's wake lets her take part without having to put herself out there. Sloane is the brave one, the one who can make every day seem filled with excitement. Sloane and Emily have been friends since ninth grade.Shortly after Sloane's disappearance, Emily gets a letter from her which gives her a list of things to do. They had exchanged such lists before. But before, the lists always ended with instructions to find the other and tell them about the adventures. Emily decides to complete Sloane's list in the hopes that it will tell her something about where Sloane went.Emily never expected to find herself and her courage by doing so many things that scared her. From kissing a stranger to dancing all night, Emily has an action-packed summer. She also gets to know Frank Porter along the way. Frank is the All-American, class president, over-achiever from their high school. Emily didn't think he even knew her name. She also makes friends with the girl who works at the pizza place next to where she has her summer job and Frank's best buddy Collins too. The four of them spend the summer hanging out and checking off the items on Emily's list. This was a fast-paced wonderful story about growing up and learning who you are. I loved watching Emily face her fears and learn to face the world without Sloane breaking the trail for her. It was a great story about friendships old and new. I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful story.

Since You've Been Gone - Best friends, Lists, and Unexpected Romance By Sara I adore everything Morgan Matson writes and SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE is no exception. When Emily's best friend Sloane and her family suddenly disappear from town, leaving nothing behind but a list of 13 random things for Emily to accomplish, Emily is lost. Her most recognizable trait is that she's Sloane's friend, but now that Sloane is suddenly gone, Emily doesn't know who she's supposed to be. And the list? Sloane was always sending Emily off with lists of dares, but, now that Sloane is the one that's gone, Emily's only hope is that the list will somehow lead her to Sloane, wherever she is. Emily is determined to accomplish everything on the list, even the things she's terrified of, like riding a horse. With the help of the clean cut, perfect Frank Porter, Emily will cross all 13 dares. Over the summer, she'll conquer her fears, make new friends, let loose, and, unexpectedly, now that Sloane is gone, understand her in ways that she never did before.I LOVE this book. At the beginning of the novel, Emily only defines herself in relation to Sloane, but, by the end, she's her own person. She becomes braver and more herself than she's ever been before. Her journey is really, really inspiring, but underneath all of that, Sloane and Emily have a really wonderful relationship that actually grows in important ways after Sloane mysteriously leaves town. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and, in this case, smarter. One of my favorite elements of the novel was the look at family it offers. Emily's family isn't perfect, but she comes to realize how loving and enviable her home life is in comparison to many of her friends'. Sloane and Frank live in perfect houses and have traditionally successful parents, from the outside their lives look perfect to Emily, but she soon comes to learn that it really is what's inside that counts... that her messy, crazy, theatrical family is nothing to scoff at.Now somebody write me a list of dares that will change my life!
