The first half of the nineteenth century in the American West was marked by an intense spirit of national pride and frontier determination. The politicians were the ones who stoked the flames of national pride that would eventually bring the territory of California into the American union. From the year 1803 when the Louisiana Purchase brought the entire Rocky Mountain territory under the control of the American government, men called free trappers were moving about throughout the territory and in their own way claiming it for the new owners. Their activities, and their aggression toward the Native Americans who inhabited the region, where source of conflict and violence. Where the Lewis and Clark expedition had gone through the entire Western territory all the way to the Pacific Ocean and back without engaging in open conflict with the natives, things were gradually changing in that regard. Tribes which it always thought with one another were now considering the white settlers as invaders of their territories and the danger to their ancient traditions. The men who took part in this process of expansion, and invasion, took it for granted that their Native American counterparts could not be trusted for the most part. The story is Samuel Ogden Leonard, the Mountain Man, began in eighteen twenty when he was just sixteen years old. In the summer of that year he met a consummate mountain man, Clyde Patterson, who had been a companion of one of the first, is not the first mountain man, John Coulter. After Coulter’s death in the war of eighteen twelve, Patterson continued his life as a mountain man, mostly alone as a free trapper. He saw in Young Sam Ogden, not just the makings of a mountain man but the makings of a great mountain man he was fascinated with the experience that Young Sam had already had in the short time that he had spent in the Rocky mountain region. He wanted to pass on to his protégé, the skills that would make him one of the greatest mountain men to ever live. In order to do that, young Samuel had to learn the secrets that are revealed in this volume, “Winter Down.”

Winter Down: The Sam Ogden Mountain Man Series Vol. II, by Robert M. Johnson

About the Author Robert M Johnson is spent a good portion of his adult life living in mountain regions. The life of frontiersmen like Sam Ogden is a constant struggle with the elements changes in seasons, altitude, animal migrations, and human greed. This is the second volume of the Sam Ogden series where we see the young man, still seventeen years old taking on the challenges of a true mountain man. Along with his mentor, Clyde Patterson, he decides to journey all the way to the great ocean, an adventure that proves to be an almost impossible challenge, in 1821. The two men continued to work the beaver trade which is now thriving in the 1820s in the Rocky Mountain Territories. Mountain Man, Clyde Patterson, became fascinated with the story of his young protégé, who at sixteen years old had escaped a Grizzly Bear attack and had been captured by Indians and escaped! It was Patterson who gave young Sam Ogden, the title of being “Hard to Kill,” which served as the title for the first volume in this series. Between them, they have created a lifestyle of free trapping and wintering in the mountains. In this volume, “Winter Down,” the reader follows the day-to-day life of men who truly had the freedom to move about the new territories at will. They had to be ready for any of the challenges that might come their way, from hostile Native Americans, to grizzly bears, to winter storms that might dump two or three feet of snow on their cabin at one time. The moments of beauty and quiet in this very active life made it all worthwhile. Together the two men were discovering the joys of reading and writing and one day hoped to leave a Journal of their experience as mountain men who truly were able to, “Winter Down.”

If the concept of chaos and probability is your thing - and even if it isn't - this book is an enjoyable read. [Spoiler Alert: Would have preferred some 'closure' around some of the characters, but to provide such wouldn't have kept with the underlying theme of the book, so I appreciate the approach the author has taken. And it does reflect how involved with the characters one gets that you actually care what happens to them!] All in all, glad I stumbled on this novel and gave it a go.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Your basic activity book, but maybe a lot more... By Amazon Customer This is just your basic "keep the kids busy on the plane" activity book, but because of the subject of the movie it can be so much more. It prompts kids to think about questions like "what are my personality islands?" and "which emotion is in charge at *my* headquarters?" and so on. It'll get your kids thinking about their emotions and their minds and how they work and what makes them different from other people. Mixed in with your basic road-trip-boredom puzzles, of course, which is just fine. If your child enjoyed and was intrigued by the movie, I definitely recommend this.

Everyone in Gray City has something to offer...or something to hide. Murder, scams, blackmail. Detective Jake Montana has to sort through the details to find out who's killing off the local athletes. Is it a jilted housewife, a jealous husband, or is someone trying to eliminate the Gray City Gladiators from the finals? This serious investigation takes a turn toward the humorous side as Jake interviews some of the town's most colorful citizens, then it's all-out slapstick at the end. A last-minute clue has set the wheels of justice in motion—literally, as Jake joins a wacky, madcap car chase through the northwest Georgia countryside. He watches helplessly as a classic muscle-car is reduced to scrap, thousands of dollars go up for grabs, and Lady Justice laughs hysterically in the face of the classic Detective Novel as she metes out her own form of punishment.

Superb writing delivers details along with action seamlessly. Reading this little doozy is a joy! The chase scene was one of my favorites! It is one of the most unusual and exhilarating imaginable, in a class of its own. If this one is ever made into a movie, it's one I won't miss! Kudos!

Butterfly Park, by Elly MacKay

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—A nameless girl is sad to leave the butterflies when her family moves from a rural house to the city. Luckily, her new house is next door to Butterfly Park, but she finds the park barren of butterflies. She enlists the help of other children to catch butterflies and bring them to the park, but they always fly away again. Chasing the stubborn insects, the children realize that flowers will attract them, and they all pitch in to replant the park. The story concludes happily with a beautified park and the girl feeling right at home. The text of this story is its weakest element, while the artwork shines. The plot is standard picture book fare, but the writing is vague, awkward, and a bit coy. The 3-D "lightbox dioramas," on the other hand, are beautifully creative and atmospheric. Painted paper figures are placed into constructed scenery, lit dramatically, and photographed. Each page glows with jewel tones, and the final spread is a gatefold that displays the neighborhood's proud transformation. As a bonus, the book's dust jacket has a "Plant your own butterfly garden" poster printed on the inside, showing flowers that will attract butterflies. VERDICT A good fit for larger collections, especially those that emphasize gardening or ecology.—Heidi Estrin, Congregation B'nai Israel, Boca Raton, FL

Review

"Each intricately detailed page is like some tiny, delicate stage set, with a blurred background suggesting an even wider world beyond.”—The New York Times Bookshelf

"Centered on the park's elaborate art nouveau gateway, MacKay's lyrical paper collage and diorama constructs feature layered details and out-of-focus backgrounds for a sense of depth. Brightly patterned butterflies, delicate flowers, and human figures pose like gracefully off-balance dancers. . . . Worthy of theme and equally pleasing to the eye and the spirit."—Kirkus Reviews

“MacKay’s artwork recreates the feel and pleasure of Edwardian-era illustration, and lovers of picture-book fantasy will embrace it.”—Publishers Weekly

“The settings are intricate—the Butterfly Park entrance gate is a thing of beauty—and MacKay’s sense of composition is spot-on.”—Bookpage

“The real treat here is the art. MacKay in in top form, and readers will delight in the mix of colours, textures, and perspectives she employs in creating the visual elements of this lovely book.”—Quill and Quire

About the Author Elly MacKay lives in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada with her husband and children. The American Claimant, by Mark Twain

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

23 of 26 people found the following review helpful. The absolute best of Mark Twain? By Jack Purcell No. Nothing by Mark Twain can qualify as his 'best'. The breadth of his writing career cuts too wide a swath for such a statement. However, The American Claimant, obscure though it is, is certainly among his best. The American Claimant is about Americans, the way they view themselves, the way they are viewed by others through the eyes of a British nobleman. Even though a century has passed since the book was written, most of the acute observations are as true today as when it was written.A family of Americans descended from an eldest son of a British Earl, Lord Rossmore, has been claiming the title for many generations. The actual young Earl, filled with idealism, decides to abdicate, to change places with the American claimant. He travels to the US with the intention of contacting Colonel Mulberry Sellers, the claimant, to exchange places. Sellers is an American dreamer, always down on his luck, an inventor, a philanthropist of sorts.Through a series of Keystone Kops misfortunes the Earl loses his letters of credit, assumes the clothing of bank robber from the west, takes up life in a boarding house of workmen, determined to make a life on his own and abandon the wealth of his past. This is the setting for The American Claimant. The Earl discovers the American dream isn't quite as it is cracked up to be, discovers his taste for the common man is far less palatable in close proximity. Every attempt to find employment is thwarted until he discovers himself to be a worthy hack as an artist.Fate takes a hand in the lives of the young Earl and the heir of the claimant, leading to a zesty, if predictable wrap-up.As with every book by Mark Twain, this one is fun. It is astute. It is thought provoking. It is well written, the characters sympathetic and mostly believable, the plot, circuitous in the best Mark Twain tradition. It also contains an element of subtle wisdom and tongue-in-cheek observation more finely honed than in many of the earlier writings. The author declared in the beginning that this would be a story without weather. He held to his promise, but in the end provided weather for the story in an appendix, for those who must have it.I don't know why this book has fallen by the wayside. It shouldn't have done so.I recommend it for any reader, but especially for American ones.

His droll, tongue-in-cheek humor wasn't as prevalent as in his short story, "The Diary of Adam and Eve", but there was still plenty of it, as was some of his off the wall sarcastic wit.The plot line is full of mistaken identities, misunderstood efforts, and general confusion; it was somewhat reminiscent of R.L. Stevenson's "The Wrong Box".I found myself grinning on occasion, while reading this book, and even chuckled a time or two. It was an entertaining, fun read, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a light, pleasant evening.

Very funny farce By Bomojaz What we have here is an American (Mulberry Sellers) infatuated with English peerage who believes he is the rightful heir to the Earl of Rossmore and the real Earl who decides to throw over his title, come to America, and try out good old American egalitarianism where titles don't mean a hoot. So Lord Berkeley comes to America, is mistakenly thought burned to ashes in a hotel fire, but has in the meanwhile donned the cowboy outfit of One Armed Pete, a western outlaw and bank robber with a $5,000 award on his head. Desperate to find work but unable to, Berkeley begins to doubt the wisdom of his experiment in America, but then gets a job as a painter's assistant (Twain makes fun of the limitations of artists here and it's hilarious). Sellers is an inventor and schemer and is always coming up with a new contraption (the "Cursing Phonograph") or crazy idea (shifting the tropics to the arctic); Berkeley meets his daughter Sally and they instantly fall in love. Mistaken identity and misunderstandings hamper their relationship, though it's always more funny than serious. Everything gets straightened out, of course, by the end. Twain's humor here is more farcical than satirical, and he knows how to pour it on thick and keep the laughter flowing. The best scene is where Sally dismisses Berkeley (who by that time is going by the name of Howard) because she thinks he's only after her father's earldom. Not only is the whole scene ridiculously wacky, but her despair at not being kissed by him after she tells him to leave is only the rich icing on the cake. The book is a lot of fun, though not among the very first rank of Twain's work.
