History, adventure, suspense, trust and entertainment all in one novel. I truly loved the complex novel and the way it was written. I normally don't like mysterious stories but following along with the series, I really got involved with the plot and where it was going. The thought that went into the writing of the building, security, the ins and out of what went on in the Templars kept me very interested and the shady characters involved in the plot.I won't go into the plot as to not spoil it, but it is a worthwhile read for a bit of everything with your favorite characters of our beloved Jane Austen. Many years ago, I did research on the life of the Templars and maybe that is why this novel intrigued me so much.Thank you once again for a well written and entertaining novel.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Independent Woman By Jim Hendricks The laughs continue as Lizzy and Darcy get serious. Lizzy has her problems with Darcy's Churchill desk, Caroline, again, doing what Darcy asks of her while wondering who her father is snogging. The Churchill desk is hilarious. Barbara you really did that? A very fun read, as is the rest of the series.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great continuation of modern Darcy and Lizzy story that unveils yet another aspect of the "secret life" of Mr. Darcy.... By ArkansasAustenFan I am such a fan of these light, funny novellas by Barbara. I like the modern setting and the quirky relationship that builds between Darcy and Lizzy. We have waited through 5 books to get this couple married. Barbara always pulls a rabbit out of the hat for our favorite couple to become involved in. But the Knights Templar...that is such a surprise. I love it and how Lizzy is always stepping into something she is not supposed to be involved in. The angst is due to the mysterious things Darcy is involved in and Caroline is always bumbling into the mix at the most inopportune times. Such fun. Thanks Barbara for taking us on these jaunts...hot air balloon crashes, fox hunts on wild horses, rescuing street urchins, protecting London's historical treasures...never a dull moment in this series.

Do not collect two hundred dollars when you pass Go. But I hadn’t paid attention to the warnings, too blinded by ambition and the desire to experience something new. Simply put: I was making a terrible, horrible mistake. I will say that of the three books in this series, this is my second favorite (the middle book being my top choice). I can't imagine how high much higher the stakes are for authors that choose to write a series - there are so many obligations and responsibilities... and everyone's a critic. As a reader, we invest time and energy into these characters. We all have an imaginary trajectory for their paths and we just wish upon a falling star that the odds are forever in our favor that the outcome is the one we hoped for.In the third installment, Hunter and Elle finally hit that roadblock that I've been waiting for. The other shoe finally drops. Hunter and Elle must make choices, both for themselves and their relationship. The overall tone of the book is much murkier than the other two... and the author says as much in her blog post... and I found myself running through it, hoping to find those brighter moments. And there are many. Namely, I hope there is more development in the relationship between Jessica Merlot and Elle. We got just a tease of it and they provide such a great banter that it was a welcome change.Hunter and Elle are evolving characters - they have been dynamic from the beginning and that's what so great about the writing here. Eliza Lentzski is simply letting the characters be themselves. She's letting them live (through pen and paper) the lives they were meant to live... Elle finally grows up and Hunter has some moments when you remember her immaturity.I am slightly disappointed with the way it ended (it just... ended). BUT, I hear there will be a WJ4 so I can rest easy knowing that in another year's time, the story of Elle and Hunter will continue to evolve - like us, her readers, that so enjoy her writing and this series.

Even by the standards of the series, this is a pretty angsty book. It wasn't always easy to read and there were definitely times I want to beat each character with the clue stick. It's definitely worth the trip though. Sometimes, in a series, things can seem a little stale, but the conflicts, primarily emotional and self-inflicted, seem very much in keeping with each character's nature and it feels like an authentic and legitimate continuation of their story. I'm pretty sure there's going to be at least one more book as hints are dropped for future angsty times between Hunter and Elle. In addition to the main couple, Lentzski also brings in a lot of new secondary characters and fleshes out a few others. Maybe we'll get to read some of their stories too?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Expect the Unexpected in Winter Jacket 3 By cathie1245 The third installment of Elle and Hunter has arrived and the easiest way to describe this book is to expect the unexpected. I hope any future readers who decide to review this book do not give away spoilers because this book deserves an uninhibited view point before diving into these pages. What you can expect is polished writing, witty dialogue, and of course, plenty of sarcastic humor as told through Elle's POV. So why not more of hint? Well, what I will say is that love has a way of making us say and do things that we would never expect, and the decisions we make can have such profound consequences. Many times my mouth dropped open, or a "no way" was blurted out, and even a few tears were shed. We were invited to follow along this journey, but this part of the trail challenges everything.

Best friends, big fans, a mysterious webcomic, and a long-lost girl collide in this riveting novel, perfect for fans of both Cory Doctorow and Sarah Dessen, & illustrated throughout with comics.Once upon a time, two best friends created a princess together. Libby drew the pictures, May wrote the tales, and their heroine, Princess X, slayed all the dragons and scaled all the mountains their imaginations could conjure. Once upon a few years later, Libby was in the car with her mom, driving across the Ballard Bridge on a rainy night. When the car went over the side, Libby passed away, and Princess X died with her. Once upon a now: May is sixteen and lonely, wandering the streets of Seattle, when she sees a sticker slapped in a corner window. Princess X? When May looks around, she sees the Princess everywhere: Stickers. Patches. Graffiti. There's an entire underground culture, focused around a webcomic at IAmPrincessX.com. The more May explores the webcomic, the more she sees disturbing similarities between Libby's story and Princess X online. And that means that only one person could have started this phenomenon---her best friend, Libby, who lives.

I Am Princess X, by Cherie Priest

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—May and Libby created Princess X on the day they met in fifth grade. That was before Libby and her mother died in a car crash. Now May is 16 and looking at another long, lonely summer in Seattle when she spots a Princess X sticker on the corner of a store window. Suddenly she starts seeing Princess X everywhere, including in a webcomic at IAmPrincessX.com, where the princess story is eerily similar to Libby's. This means that the only person who could have created the comic is May's best friend—Libby—who must still be alive. In her YA debut, Priest offers a tantalizing, page-turner of a mystery that spans real locations in Seattle and dark pockets of the Internet. May is an assertive, capable heroine who finds help from likable and well-realized characters along the way in this fresh and authentic story. Even when the action moves online, Priest keeps the story exciting and approachable without ever resorting to technical jargon. Accompanying illustrations by Ciesemier bring the story found in the webcomic to life and integrate beautifully with May's search for Libby in this utterly satisfying read. VERDICT An excellent book with loads of cross-genre and cross-format appeal. Highly recommended.—Emma Carbone, Brooklyn Public Library

Review * "Priest’s YA debut is an engrossing cyberthriller packed with a puzzling mystery, crackerjack detective work, and an eerie, atmospheric sense of place. Teens who roll their eyes at adults out of touch with Internet culture will eat this up." -- Booklist, starred review * "An excellent book with loads of cross-genre and cross-format appeal. Highly recommended." -- School Library Journal, starred review * "Fresh and contemporary, this hybrid novel/comic packs a lot of plot in a relatively short book, but its strongest suit may be Priest’s keen understanding of the chasmic gap between the way teens and adults engage in the landscape of the Internet." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review

Johnson Review based on the full released version with comic graphics:I had a major issue with this book which I think is due to it's hybrid nature. Unlike the vast majority of the reviewers who have already posted, I read the the e-book version, complete with the full accompanying graphics (which I do think add a lot to the story). Unfortunately, in e-book form, the formatting of the book causes serious issues. The pages are fixed, unlike most e-books where the words on a given page vary depending on font size and screen size. The book acts more like a .pdf than a traditional e-book, and I couldn't find a way to zoom in or out. In my opinion, in e-book form this book is unreadable on anything smaller than a Kindle Fire or Nook, and it isn't great on those. I tried it on three devices, a Kindle Fire HD, a Samsung Galaxy S3 and my PC. The font is so small on the phone that it was completely unreadable for me. The Kindle Fire worked better, but the font was still very difficult to read. The illustrations worked fine though. The most annoying thing was that I went to my PC thinking that the big screen size would make the book very easy to read, only to find that the Kindle for PC program will not display this book, in fact wouldn't even download it. I made do with the Kindle Fire, but it was a painful read. Anyone with a full size tablet should be OK, but anything smaller will probably be an issue.Beyond that, however, Ms. Priest's first foray into the YA genre is a fun, if light, read. Numerous other reviewers have left summaries of the book, so I will skip that. As a YA book, I think it will work best for readers at the younger end of that scale. I did enjoy it and will pass it on to my 12 and 13 year old daughters.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Gorgeous and fun YA novel By Cissa I loved this novel.I was somewhat dubious about it, because I am not YA, and since i did not grow up on comics, I find that language hard to parse sometimes. Not here, though! The comic panels added a lot to the overall plot, and were fully integrated into the text.More importantly, it's an exciting and suspenseful adventure story. I loved the bond between the 2 primary characters, and very much appreciated that sexual menacing of either of them did NOT happen, because that's a cheap shot. Instead, our 2 heroines, and a couple of guys who ended up involved, save the day based on their own considerable resources and cleverness.I also have to give serious compliments to the book designers here. The book is GORGEOUS- from the hot-pink spine, through the decorative end pages, and including the typography as well as the paper chosen (a pale cream), and using both a black/brown ink and a purple one in the printing. Brilliant!Highly recommended if you like kick-ass heroines who prevail, and/or beautifully designed books.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. For All Princess Xs By Technology Guy I Am Princess XBy: Cherie Priest, Kali CiesemierUnfortunately, I am reviewing the advanced reviewers’ copy (ARC) which does not include the graphics.I Am Princess X is a hybrid novel – part text and part graphic – with an intriguing mystery about a girl, May, still morning the loss of her best friend Libby. One day May is stunned when she begins seeing Princess X posters around town, the character the two friends had developed together and whom May thought was lost forever when Libby died. May originally wrote the comics’ stories and Libby drew the graphics.Like the two fictional friends’ collaboration, the book has one character speaking in sentences and the other mainly in graphics panels. Unfortunately, not being able to see the graphics in my reviewer’s copy, a great chunk of the impact is blunted making the story seem somewhat simple and revelations, perhaps, arriving much too soon. There is much potential with this format, however, and the final product with the graphics should be an entirely different experience. For this reason, I am giving the book the benefit of the doubt.I believe I Am Princess X is meant to appeal more to younger teens. It is not particularly complex (in adult novel terms, anyways) but it is a likable tale focusing on the friendship May and Libby had and how friendship can overcome adversity and fear. Not a bad little mystery/intrigue story overall with some action tossed in the mix. Maybe I’ll get my niece a copy when it comes out.

Don't Miss Out On This One It Is Worth The Read And Then Some By CC I spent my two hours of commute time laughing out loud for real over this funny, irreverent and witty story about a hapless maid who should have stayed in the white collar suit world. What a wonderful surprise this story ended up being. I spent three days commuting with this book. The dialog is hysterical and the characters voices you can actually hear as you read the dialogue between the characters, my fav being Helen, she's well . . . crazy perfect. What a cool chick I so want to strike up a friendship with her and would love to meet for coffee, only problem is she only exist in this story. That was a huge disappointment LOL.The story moves along at a quick pace almost screwball comedy of the 40's style with a little bit of that Working Girl of the 80's. When I read a book like this I often wonder if the author wrote it originally as a television spec script. After all it reads well, but better is the film that plays during the film rolls out in your head. Not to say it doesn't read well, it reads gut busting funny, thoughtful and sensitive with moments of hilarity captured with the style of Author Lauren Spitzberg.

Laugh out loud funny By michael naylor Memoirs of a Motel Maid was recommended by a friend and was one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. I have not read much in the humour/satire genre recently and this book has dragged me back laughing all the way. The book is well written and each character is brilliantly crafted. The varied cast of characters is unique, quirky and their conversations are brilliant.Overall if you want a good laugh Memoirs of a Motel Maid will definitely deliver. A genuinely funny and enjoyable read from start to finish.

Otter in Space (I Am Otter), by Sam Garton

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—Otter, the always exuberant, occasionally exasperating, but definitely lovable character who was first introduced in Garton's I Am Otter (HarperCollins, 2014) is back. A trip to the museum has turned the spirited creature on to the wonder of space travel, and when she gets home, she decides to plan a journey to obtain a moon rock of her own. Otter delegates jobs to her stuffed toys (constant companion Teddy becomes a fellow astronaut, while Giraffe is tasked with Mission Control), builds a space suit out of a cardboard box, and blasts off using a playground slide. Though the digitally created, cartoonlike illustrations depict laugh-out-loud situations (the hapless Teddy enduring a cycle through the dryer as part of his antigravity training), they're also warm, gently portraying the expressive young animal through ups and downs. Her observations are endearingly naive, and there's often a delightfully childlike contrast between what she imagines and what's actually occurring, such as her belief that the inanimate Teddy has ideas and opinions of his own (for instance, an image of the slumped-over bear is paired with text that reads, "Teddy took his space suit off. He didn't seem to be taking space travel seriously."). Kids will enjoy Otter's riotous antics, while adults may sympathize with her put-upon guardian, Otter Keeper, who returns at the end of the day from work to discover the mischief wrought by a well-intentioned ward who just can't seem to stay out of trouble. VERDICT Another "Aw"-inspiring adventure with Otter.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

Review “From “mishun control” to launch and liftoff, Garton’s bright, shiny digital illustrations are full of sparkle and humor. Lively, giggle-producing proof that imaginative play is just as good as getting to the moon.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“Bound to please established fans and to cultivate some new ones.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

Remarkably, This Second Otter Story Is Even Better Than the First By Pop Bop The first Otter book, (I Am Otter), had to bear the burden of introducing Otter, Otter Keeper, Otter's best friend Teddy and the entire world of Otter. It was charming and imaginative, but as I say it had to cover a lot of ground. It was still marvelous. When all of the elements come together in just the right balance - as they did then - you have a real winner. But this book. First off, Otter Keeper takes Otter and Teddy to the Museum, which is where they see a special exhibit and get the idea to travel into space. But get this. Before that happens, Otter wanders around the rest of the Museum. She makes passing observations about dinosaurs, old paintings, old stuff in general and gift shops. Each comment is a one sentence gem that captures, in full deadpan earnestness, the authentic reaction of a kid in a museum. It's funny; it's true; it's charming, endearing, and not one tiny bit affected. The whole trip to the Moon is just bonus time and it works, again, because of Otter's deadpan and guileless delivery. Nothing about these books is cutesy or twee. There are no false notes and the author never hedges his bets by introducing irony. Otter is sincere, honest, focused and totally insane as only a four year old kid can be, and Gartner just nails that weird combination of fantasy and practicality that is a little kid's head. The effect is arresting, entertaining and admirable. It helps that the drawings here are crisp, well colored, and very expressive. Emotions like "frustration", actions like "adventuring", and feelings like "inspiration", are brutally difficult to capture and express in drawings, but Garton gets it right on every page. It is always clear what is going on with Otter, and it's possible for a little reader to make a real connection with these visuals. There is a disconnect between what one sees, (Otter in a cardboard box), and what Otter is imagining, (Otter in a spaceship), and the author gets the charm and humor of that disconnect right without at all mocking Otter's creativity or imagination.Captions and narrative are challenging because it's so easy to get cloying or clunky. Again, Garton hits that poetic sweet spot where he writes just enough to drive the tale without overreaching. So, Otter remains just the right combination of funny, mellow, curious, spirited, playful and appealing. She doesn't come with a lot of extra business; she isn't weighed down with any message; there isn't anything heavy handed about her story. The whole tone or feeling here is one of creative play and security and discovery. And isn't that just exactly what you want in a favorite picture book?

Her adventures are just as real to us as they are to her because the want them to be. This book is a delight and you don't have to be a child to think so. Sam Garton's art is intriguing all by itself. I recommend this little book for children of all ages.

About the Author

I was born in the UK but raised round the world and spent most of my childhood with my nose in a book. When I was seven I wrote my first proper story about a magic puddle that flipped up to reveal a secret world underground.

I’m now a non-practicing engineer who works in project management. I write romance and young adult stories. I’ve been a voice-over and radio continuity artist. I love country music and used to have my own radio show. My boyfriend says I have an unhealthy obsession with Kenny Chesney. I live in London.

Review: 'No One Wants to Be Miss Havisham' by Brigid Coady By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings" Edie Dickens loves her job as a divorce lawyer because it confirms her beliefs that real love does not exist and neither do happy endings. Completely against her own principles, Edie takes on the role of head bridesmaid at her best friend Mel's wedding, but only because it's Mel and because she couldn't have possibly refused. One night Edie is suddenly visited by the ghost of her friend Jessica Marley, who tells her she will have to change if she wants to find happiness of her own. In the weeks before the wedding, Edie will be visited by the three ghosts of Weddings Past, Present and Future, to shed some light on her life. When handsome lawyer and colleague Jack Twist is also thrown in the mix, Edie is confronted with all kinds of feelings and thoughts she didn't know she had. But will it be enough for her to change her ways, once and for all?I love retellings of Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'; it's such a wonderful classic which I simply can't get enough of and authors can do so many different things with it. Brigid Coady has definitely written her own version of the famous tale, with instead of a Christmas theme a wedding theme at its core, which I loved. While the plotline and some of the characters are clearly based on Dickens' classic, the novel has its own touch and some different elements in there as well. Main character Edie is considered to be cold-hearted and ruthless, but there was just something about her which intrigued me and which I liked from the start. As the story progressed, the reader learns a lot about Edie and why she is the way she is. I really liked getting to know Edie and seeing her change because of everything that happens to her.The book has a solid and well-drawn cast of secondary characters, including a handsome man in the form of lawyer and ex-Rugby player Jack Twist. This touch of romance really added another layer to the story (there's hardly any romance in Dickens' original, of course) and I loved the chemistry between him and Edie. I also want to mention the gorgeous book cover and great title, which both also really made me want to pick up this novel. I read another review which termed this novel 'Dickens with a chick-lit make-over' and I really think that sums up this novel quite well. Overall, 'No One Wants to Be Miss Havisham' is an entertaining and well-written story about second chances and being able to change who you are and what you believe in; a fabulous retelling of a classic tale that I loved from start to finish!

I'd loved Brigid's 'Kiss' short stories and this sounded like something way out of leftfield in comparison. Romance stories with ghosts are a bit hit and miss for me, and anything paranormal is out of my comfort zone. This, however, is a work of genius. The ghostly elements are humorous (leaving trails of pink glitter in their wake) as well as giving the reader an opportunity to find out about Edie's background by visiting weddings of the past, present and future.I really liked Edie's dry and cynical outlook, especially when compared to the romantic viewpoint of everyone else in the book and it was highly believable that she'd feel that way when her own experience of relationships is less than perfect. She's somehow both bright and ditzy, and although she has a reputation for being hard nosed, her personality changes as the book progresses. She's unlike most romantic heroines, that's for sure. Now onto Jack. Jack Twist was a great character. Rugby player and local hero, he works with Edie at a law firm. He's strong in every sense and a no-nonsense kind of guy. However, he's warm-hearted and always seems to be the one helping Edie out of all the messes she gets herself into. There's one scene where Edie longs for her feet to be on solid ground and Jack's there beside her, offering support. My heart was all aflutter right then and I could have done with the smelling salts. I was full on swooning, I'm telling you now.If laughs are your thing, then Coady's observations will have you chuckling- there are some hilarious portrayals of characters (Edie's boss in particular!), cringeworthy weddings and alcohol induced embarrassments. I think I'm going to be looking closely at suit linings for the foreseeable future as a result of this book...Overall, it's a well written and touching debut which strikes the balance between humour and heart. If you're looking for an original romance with a quirky twist, look no further- Brigid Coady has stepped up to the helm.No One Wants to Be Miss Havisham may appeal to fans of Marian Keyes, Sophie Kinsella and Carmen Reid.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. worked beautifully with the modern-day story of Edie Dickens By LoveBooks212 Chick Lit is my cup of tea, and I was drawn right in by the gorgeous cover of this book. I was a little bit skeptical when I realized that it was going to involve elements of a Christmas Carol. I'm not generally a fan of books that are an overlay of an existing story. This premise, however, worked beautifully with the modern-day story of Edie Dickens. Coady skillfully used the older tale as a jumping-off point without ever belaboring it. I never rolled my eyes at the device. Our heroine is a tough as nails, self-described "shark" of a divorce lawyer. She doesn't believe in love, marriage, or commitment. Once a carefree child, a traumatic event led to her closing herself off to these possibilities, and indeed to happiness itself. Instead, she aligns herself with Ms. Satis, a cold-hearted titan in the divorce law game. Her mentor hates love and marriage and preaches against weakness.Edie picks apart the weak, breathes down the necks of the slow, and mocks the romantic. No one likes her, including, we suspect, herself. But, she grits her teeth and gets through every day, holding herself to an impossibly high standard and ticking off successes in business. It's remarked that it must be cold in her bed at night. She's asked to be a bridesmaid in the wedding of the only friend she has, and despite the torture of it, she endures. Her having a best friend is the only spark of humanity we see. The bride's parents start to misbehave, propelling Edie into behaving like a disapproving task-mistress to ensure they don't ruin her best friend's big day.Enter Jack Twist. As I read the book, I could only picture Jon Hamm/Don Draper (but nice). A pro Rugby player and skilled lawyer, Jack Twist is the object of every girl in their shared firm's attention. On a dare at a hen night, Edie winds up in a compromising position with the knight. He makes her feel uncertain and off-kilter: Her reaction to this is rage. She does everything she can to drive him away, licking his wounds. But, Jack's more than a match for Edie.He magically appears at all the right times with all the solutions to all of her problems. As she begins to be visited by ghosts of weddings past, and as she is forced to face the woman she has become, Edie grows increasingly unraveled and in need of saving.Like Scrooge, Edie has a mirror held up to herself in this tale, and when she can no longer bear what she sees, she has to make difficult new choices. My favorite books follow the journey of a woman's growth and this book fits the bill. I enjoyed the rawness and honesty of Edie's self-evaluation, and the vulnerability she showed when faced with the puzzle that affected her entire life, forming her personality. The fact that hero Jack brings romance into the mix was icing on the (wedding) cake. The resolution is immensely satisfying.Old-School Chick Lit, and I really enjoyed it.
