"Ashley’s High Five For Daddy" is a beautifully illustrated picture book that gently introduces young readers to the process military families experience on the return of their loved one from deployment. The star of the story “Ashley” is a feisty, fun, and adventurous. She adores her dad, and is having some trouble understanding why he has returned home a little changed from how she remembers him. Saulsby’s story nicely demonstrates the need for adults to prepare themselves and their children for the possibility that the returning service member may need some space and time as they are reintroduced into the family.

In addition to being a Marine, I am the daughter of a retired Marine and former wife of a Marine who was in combat during the Gulf War. I remember when my husband came home having to explain to my boys, who were around 4 and 7 at that time, why their dad occasionally had difficulty being around crowds and a lot of noise. I wish I had this book back then; it would have made it much easier to explain to my young sons. Thank you, Pam, for offering such an accurate, thoughtful book for children. High five!CJ ScarletAuthor, Neptune's Gift: Discovering Your Inner Ocean

By TopFlyte While "Ashley's High Five for Daddy" is written with our military in mind, I found that the book can help any parent with a young child to have a better understanding of a parent who's dealing with a stressful situation. Children know when parents are not in a good mood or when something is not "quite right." "Ashley's High Five for Daddy" is a reminder that the kids will be all right as long as they're given the tools to understand that they're still loved and important in their parent's/parents' life/lives. Ms. Saulsby wrote an insightful, easy to read book that should be on every child's book-shelf. This book matters!!

I am certain many families have experienced the same wonderful, and yet, scary feelings about their returning Soldier’s behavior. Although, “Ashley’s High Five for Daddy,” is about a serious subject, it is such a joyful story. You can feel the love and excitement the family and neighbors have for their Soldier and that he is happy to be home. I recommend this book as a nice story for both the child and family of the returning Solider.

Personal vendettas, hidden treasure, and a monkey named Carl will send bounty hunter Stephanie Plum on her most explosive adventure yet.

The Crime: Armed robbery to the tune of nine million dollars

Dom Rizzi robbed a bank, stashed the money, and did the time. His family couldn't be more proud. He always was the smart one.

The Cousin: Joe Morelli

Joe Morelli, Dom Rizzi, and Dom's sister, Loretta, are cousins. Morelli is a cop, Rizzi robs banks, and Loretta is a single mother waiting tables at the firehouse. The all-American family.

The Complications: Murder, kidnapping, destruction of personal property, and acid reflux

Less than a week after Dom's release from prison, Joe Morelli has shadowy figures breaking into his house and dying in his basement. He's getting threatening messages, Loretta is kidnapped, and Dom is missing.

The Catastrophe: Moonman

Morelli hires Walter "Mooner" Dunphy, stoner and "inventor" turned crime fighter, to protect his house. Morelli can't afford a lot on a cop's salary, and Mooner will work for potatoes.

The Cupcake: Stephanie Plum

Stephanie and Morelli have a long-standing relationship that involves sex, affection, and driving each other nuts. She's a bond enforcement agent with more luck than talent, and she's involved in this bank-robbery-gone-bad disaster from day one.

The Crisis: A favor for Ranger

Security expert Carlos Manoso, street name Ranger, has a job for Stephanie that will involve night work. Morelli has his own ideas regarding Stephanie's evening activities.

The Conclusion: Only the fearless should listen to Fourteen.

Thrills, chills, and incontinence may result.

What I am going to do is say goodbye to one of my all time favorite series. The last couple of books have been horribly silly and ridiculous; this one was no exception. The characters I once loved and looked forward all year to hearing from are barely visible. The little quirks that used to make them unique and funny are now taking over their entire persona making them slightly moronic. The dialogue that used to be naturally witty seems forced and contrived. Jokes, gags and antics that once made me laugh have been recycled and reused so much, it's sad.No one in this series is growing or getting anywhere, they are all just going in circles. I want Stephanie to get better at the bounty hunter thing; I want her to grow up. I don't want her or Ranger or Joe to change, but after so many years you expect SOMETHING of substance to happen.I barely got through this book. Janet has provided hours of entertainment for me in the past with this series and for that I will always be grateful. But I can't for the life of me see myself shelling out the big bucks for these hardcover books filled with drivel anymore.I hope that Janet rethinks what she has been doing with this series lately and gives it a much needed overhaul. The last couple of books have seemed rushed and phoned in, a huge departure from the earlier books in the series. My days of rushing to the bookstore on release dates are over. When book 15 comes out I will wait to read reviews, first. If the reviews make the book look promising, maybe I will read it. But from where I sit now, I don't see me opening another `new' Plum adventure. I will reread the older and much better books in the series if I need a Plum fix.Cherise Everhard, June 2008

By Happiness is reading After plunking down some hard earned cash on this year's installment of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, I raced home to read. What the? Is there a book return policy? What a waste. If you love Plum for the edgy writing, great wit, fantastic plot, and wonderful characters, forget Fearless Fourteen. Plum has always been more than just a breezy, silly, summer read for me.I am invested in the lives of these characters. What I got this year is slapstick, unresolved sub plots, villains with no names, subject matter bordering on the distasteful, recycled plots and my favorite characters very out of character. I even recognized things said by one character in past books, now being uttered by a different character in this book. Bizzare. No sense rehashing the pitiful storyline. What storyline? This book reads like a major hit on all those that I have grown to love. Morelli's character takes a nosedive as a belching, inept detective with a dead body in his basement and he`s more concerned about the concrete floor or playing softball with his cronies. Stephanie is no longer the gutsy, edgy woman that she was in past books but rather either now babysitting some teenager or flouncing around Trenton in some idiotic reality Bounty Hunter fiasco. Grandma Mazur, dressed in Goth - a master gamer? Lula reduced to sneaky tricks and turning into Bridezilla? Tank fainting and babbling? Mrs. Plum downing a glass of whiskey? And where the heck was Ranger? Reduced to a mere side character?Speaking of unresolved, and there is a lot unresolved.....like, whose toes were they, anyway? This book reads like a bad episode of the Three Stooges. The World of Plum in the Twilight Zone. Unrecognizable. A bad dream.I should have saved my money. Waited to borrow the library copy. Or better yet, not have read it at all.Sadly, I think it is time to say goodbye to Janet Evanovich and Plum.Gee, I wish I could get my money back on this one. Are you sure there isn't a better return policy on a really bad book?

I thought much of it was amusing and there was at least one good belly-laugh (where I had tears rolling down my cheeks). But overall, I think Fearless Fourteen is a bit of a stretch--even for Stephanie Plum.Plum is a bounty hunter from Trenton, NJ and as usual, her life is utter chaos. She ends up babysitting the teenaged son of a skip, Zook. Zook is addicted to an interactive Internet game called Minionfire. He also likes to spray paint everything. Ranger (a fellow bounty hunter and owner of a security firm) hires Stephanie to help babysit an aging singer, Brenda, who acts like a diva and is inclined to get into trouble. Plum also finds herself in the middle of a 10-year-old $9 million unsolved bank robbery, and it appears that the money might be somewhere in boyfriend Joe Morelli's house. Brenda decides to start a reality show and follows Plum around as she's trying to do her job. And when things couldn't get any worse, Lula is engaged to boyfriend, Tank, and is driving Plum crazy with wedding plans. All of these situations play out with the usual Evanovich zaniness. Unfortunately, I think there was just way too much going on here--especially toward the end.Evanovich is skillful at describing life in Trenton. Of a fast-food restaurant, she writes "Cluck-in-a-Bucket is a zoo on Sunday. It's the lunch of choice for the lazy, the fat, the salt-starved, the emotionally injured, the families on budgets, the cholesterol-deprived and the remaining ten percent of the population who just want a piece of chicken." My favorite character (next to Plum) is Lula, "former `ho, turned bonds office file clerk and wheelman. She's a plus-size black woman who likes to squash herself into too small clothes featuring animal print and spandex. Lula's cup runneth over from head to toe." I'm glad that Evanovich has turned Lula into a regular.Although I don't think this is Evanovich's best Plum book, I still enjoyed reading the exploits of Stephanie. When I need a break from serious female detectives and private investigators including Kinsey Millhone, Sharon McCone, Nevada Barr, Kathy Mallory and Temperance Brennan, reading about Stephanie and Lula is like watching "Lucy and Ethel" on television.

A life-long exploration of the mysterious world of afterlife research has led to this book. The notion of a world beyond this one is firmly rooted into our popular culture, as countless strange phenomena in life point us toward this direction--from hauntings, to near-death experiences, and many more encounters with the "beyond". By venturing all the way through this rabbit-hole, Cyrus Kirkpatrick has come out from the other end, still with his marbles intact, and with the intention of finally putting all the pieces together to describe the reality behind what appears to be a multi-planar universe that we all exist as part of. A topic that must be ultimately rooted in science and not the New Age aisle, "Understanding Life After Death" is hopefully an attempt to push the subject in the right direction.

Cyrus Kirkpatrick writes in an easy to read, personal and conversational style which is very engaging. His grasp of the evidence for the afterlife is impressive as is his ability to penetrate the arguments of the pseudo-skeptics. His book contains excellent sections on the evidence for mediumship, near-death experiences, Leslie Flint, and his own experiences of out of body travel. As a young tech-savvy college-educated globe trotting writer, journalist and film maker, his is a wonderful fresh voice in the field of afterlife research which would be particularly appealing to other millennials. The book would be a wonderful gift for a college age friend or relative to counter the skepticism that pervades academia.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Much Food for Thought By Michael Tymn This book offers a wide range of subjects under the “afterlife” heading – evidence for the survival of consciousness, personal experiences suggesting survival, philosophy, science, psychology, skepticism, mythology, history, what-have-you. After discussing some of the best evidence, including credible mediumship and near-death experiences, the author provides some very interesting out-of-body experiences of his own. He then flitters back and forth from one topic to another, but does a very good job in weaving them all together as he gives his conclusions relative to what awaits everyone after death. As with most every other author on the subject, Kirkpatrick is aware that his experiences and research will be met by the disdain of those fancying themselves as wise, intelligent and rational people. “Some of my generation’s disdain for the supernatural is born from rightful distrust of religion and its vague links to even the secular cases for the ‘soul,’ he explains. “As a non-religious, secular person myself – I can perfectly understand this distrust. But we must be careful not to allow our disillusionment with religion to poison all spiritual concepts.” He spends quite a bit of time setting forth the debunkers’ views, explaining how they arrived at their smug positions, before he then debunks the debunkers.I found Kirkpatick’s “forays into the astral,” especially interesting. He states that he first began exploring the out-of-body (OBE) state in 2013. “...I was shocked by how my consciousness was the same as waking – immediately clarifying that I was not asleep,” he writes, going on to describe how in his OBE state he was still tethered to his body and that concentration was required to keep from falling into a dream state. After some practice, he took it to another level and realized that he astral projecting and in another realm of existence. After conversing with others in that other reality, he came to the conclusion that humans are supposed to remain confused about their true nature, as it is part of the developmental process. “Most skeptics of the OBE assume that all experiences are some type of dream-state,” he offers with much certainty. “I can confirm that this is not so, and I would have no interest in the subject if it were all merely dreams, as dreams themselves in many ways do not interest me.”There is much discussion of the mediumship of Leslie Flint. While pointing out that the Wikipedia write-up on Flint has the usual debunking bias, claiming that Flint was an elaborate magician, Kirkpatick counters all the debunking arguments with explanations as to how and why the debunkers are wrong.Trying to understand the afterlife, he writes in a concluding chapter, “is like trying to understand all of Europe based on the account of one person’s 30-minute layover in Belgrade.” Yet, there is enough coming through from the Other Side to give us some hints as to what to expect – very little of which is consistent with the teachings of orthodox religions. “Afterlife awareness, at least in my personal experience, amplifies my life,” Kirkpatrick ends his discussion. “What I discovered was that the ordinary lingering fear of death was at least partially lifted from my shoulders.”Basically, the book is aimed at helping the reader in “living life to the max” – something much easier to do when we are less fearful and see meaning that goes beyond this life. The open-minded reader should find much food for thought in this book and be nourished by it.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Highly Recommended By Travis Basinger I personally highly recommend Cyrus Kirkpatrick's book "Understanding Life After Death", as it goes beyond the typical restrictive dogma of what various conflicting people say as set in stone regarding the afterlife, to rather what we know from a very wide variety of spirit sources. If a source attempts to restrict the afterlife and it's infinite possibilities in any way, shape, or form (many will attempt this) run like hell from it. General rule of thumb, if it says "you can't do this or that in the afterlife" it's dogma, if it says "you will quickly grow beyond the desire for this and that" (as if we are all robots on an assembly line) it's dogma, plain and simple. I prefer a wide variety of spirit sources that realize there are an infinite number of realms, paths, experiences, etc, in the hereafter, rather than a restrictive set of rules (which always invalidates many conflicting spirit sources). An example of spirit sources in agreement: "There are no restrictions on this side, those restrictions people think exist here are really restrictions within oneself. Some people think that things they are not aware of do not exist, in fact they are not conscious of these things, they do not know they exist. The point is that as one progresses so one opens up ones mind, they become aware of these things." - Rudolph Valentino: 12 July, 1968 (Direct Voice Recording: Via the Direct Voice Mediumship of Leslie Flint. Rudolph Valentino, crossed over on August 23, 1926) "There are many spheres, this business of spheres and conditions of life and planes ...and summerlands and all these other phrases that people have created ... sometimes people on this side have used those terms, because they couldn't think of anything else to use ... there is no way of depicting or describing, because all these different planes, in a kind of way, intermingle, I mean there are millions of them, not just one or two or three, or the seventh plane ... all this is just talk, it doesn't really matter... it's only to give you some sort of vague idea ... but every plane is a series of many planes, interwoven ... and according to a mans evolution development and his consciousness widening and expanding, he will be receptive and aware of and conscious of different vistas, different aspects and so become a little wiser and a little more understanding, a little more evolved or developed." - Mickey (Leslie Flint's Spirit Guide), Leslie Flint Direct Voice Recording. "What may happen to us immediately after the cord is severed may vary infinitely according to the multiplicity of human temperaments which go to make up the populations of the earth, and according to the wide divergence in degrees of spirituality possessed by the new arrivals. Circumstances diversify individual cases to such an extent that it would require many volumes to recount even a part of the experiences of others in the matter of arrival in the spirit world alone." - Here and Hereafter by Anthony Borgia. In closing, never allow anyone to restrict your afterlife. Your own unique path is yours to walk, you are not a spirit on an afterlife assembly line to bland sameness. The true danger of people attempting to restrict the afterlife and it's infinite possibilities is that not only is it restricting to those who proclaim the restrictions, who will clearly find themselves in such a highly limited co-created environment with like-minded souls (like-attracts-like is universal in the afterlife) but likewise all of those who dogmatically follow after them will find themselves in such restrictive realms after death, and just like those who are dogmatically attached to various world religions teachings, it can be very hard to break them free from their self imposed dogmas. Free-Your-Mind!

“An X-Files worthy mystery keeps the pages turning,” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) as Parker and his sister do whatever it takes to find their father in this cosmic adventure packed with action from the author of The Ability and Mindscape.Parker and his family share a secret: they can, with the help of advanced technology, communicate between themselves through their thoughts. When Parker, his dad, and sister Emma move to New York three years after his mother’s death, Parker is having a hard time. He misses London and his friends, his father is distracted with his new job, and Emma is looking out for him instead of the other way around. And then Parker’s dad, on the cusp of a technological breakthrough, is kidnapped. Thanks to a message his dad sent telepathically before the signal cut off, Parker is suddenly on a rescue mission. Now Parker and Emma, along with their friend Michael and Polly the pig, must confront the only link to their father—a dangerous man locked away in an asylum. But all the signs point to one thing: the company his dad works for is up to something big. Huge. A perfectly sinister project that threatens far more than Parker’s family. A project called SIX.

Six, by M.M. Vaughan

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—British siblings Parker and Emma Banks have a lot on their plates: Emma is deaf, Parker is being bullied at their new American school, and their mother is dead. Their father, renowned scientist Dr. Geoffrey Banks, is often unavailable due to the hours he's putting in at his new job at Avecto. The three stay in contact with a telepathy device developed by Dr. Banks to help Emma communicate, but it doesn't help them talk about the things that really matter. Then Dr. Banks disappears, and Parker and Emma are the only ones who can rescue him—if they can figure out what he did at Avecto. Through many twists and turns, they discover that their father was developing teleportation technology to transport people to a new utopian planet called SIX, and that he has been unwillingly teleported there. Most issues are resolved, but some remaining loose threads make another installation possible. At close to 400 pages, there's a lot crammed into this book. The periodic action scenes keep the pages turning, but other plot elements seem unnecessary. Parker's bullying and the introduction of an albino pig only serve to bog down the story. Certain plot points smack of deus ex machina. For example, Parker has a wealthy sidekick whose money handily circumvents a variety of obstacles. VERDICT An additional purchase for ravenous readers of adventurous sci-fi.—Amy Holland, Irondequoit Public Library, NY

Review "Readers will be drawn into the story with its swift, adventurous plot." (Booklist Online)STARRED REVIEW: "Three kids, a pet pig and a helpful chauffeur must unravel a mystery of cosmic proportions. Creative details, likable characters and an X-Files-worthy mystery keep the pages turning, but it is the supportive and loving Banks family that makes this story shine. A surprise ending will encourage readers to think beyond the text and grapple with some real-world dilemmas. Inventive, entertaining and thought-provoking." (Kirkus)"Vaughan (The Ability) puts an intriguing spin on the classic SF conceits of teleportation and telepathy, providing a plausible way for these young heroes to face off against an all-powerful corporation. The open-ended conclusion leaves room for further exploration of a concept that is full of potential, and Vaughan’s considered portrayal of 10-year-old Emma, who doesn’t let her deafness slow her down in the least, is particularly well done." (Publishers Weekly)“This action-packed science fiction novel is a page-turner. His British accent makes him a target for bullies, he has no friends and his little sister, Emma, has adjusted seamlessly. To make matters worse, his scientist father has been working long hours every night because he is on the cusp of a technological breakthrough, and Parker hates living in the same place his mother died three years earlier. But then everything changes: Parker's father is kidnapped by his company, leaving only a cryptic message about a man named Solomon Gladstone behind. Parker, along with Emma and fellow school outcast Michael, have to figure out Dr. Banks's message and find this mysterious Gladstone. As they learn more about their father's company, they discover the terrible truth about a top-secret project called SIX, and that their search for Dr. Banks might just turn otherworldly. This book was definitely a page-turner. After a certain point, with so many car chases, kidnappings and break-ins, you can't help but want to keep reading until the end. There's a lot of action and a lot of suspense in this book, and a couple of truly heartbreaking moments. The characters are all great, though Emma and Michael are the standouts. Emma, who is deaf, is just as feisty and fiery as a little sister ought to be. She's also made it her mission to care deeply about social and environmental issues, adopting and caring for stray birds and even a pig. Emma has the biggest heart, and it was wonderful to see a character with a disability be given her own distinct personality that had nothing to do with her hearing. Michael is also a great character as the resident techie for the trio. He's a master at computers, but not exactly brave. Through his friendship with Parker and Emma, he learns to trust himself and stand up for himself when the time comes.Though it reads very fast and the plot is engaging, the book does feel a little unfinished at the end. It seems like a set-up for a sequel, as there are some unanswered questions and the major characters feel some unease in the last few pages. It definitely suggests that something major will happen in the next book, and while I'm excited to read more, I wished we could have gotten some more answers in this book. But overall, SIX Is a fun book with likeable characters and an original premise. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes action-packed science fiction.by M. M. Bought for my ten year old daughter but actually read it myself and couldn't put it down. Gripping from start to finish. Very visual. I hope they make it into a movie and I hope there are going to be sequels. I think anyone from the age of nine on will enjoy this book. My ten year old loved it too when I finally let her read it. She loved that one of the main characters is a deaf girl (who also happens to be very tough and smart). All around great read which leaves you hanging at the end!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I think parents will enjoy it just as much as their children! By Kathryn svendsen I thoroughly enjoyed this action/adventure novel written for middle-grade students. It was fast-paced and exciting. The protagonists, Parker and his deaf sister Emma along with their friend Michael are extremely resourceful and creative.Parker, Emma and their dad share technology that allows them to communicate between themselves through their thoughts. Emma is also proficient at lip reading and signing.Parker and Emma’s dad is almost never around as he is working night and day on a project at his new job. They’ve been uprooted from their home in London and are being bullied at school except for the one boy, Michael who has befriended them.Just on the cusp of completing his project, Parker’s dad is kidnapped. Fortunately due to the message he sent Parker via his thoughts before he was taken Parker has a clue as to how to rescue his dad. But what is this mysterious project? What is so important about it? This project affects more than just Parker’s family. It’s a sinister project called SIX.I liked the bits of humour that were injected into the book to lighten the tension. It made me laugh out loud and would be something that would definitely strike the funny bone of a youngster in the 8 – 12 year old range. There are lots of twists and turns in this plot, enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. The author has developed the characters of Parker and Emma well enough that you will care about what happens to them.I don’t believe this is the last book you’ll see about Project SIX. I’ll be watching for another one. I gave this one 5 stars out of 5. It was thoroughly enjoyable.Thank you to the publisher for providing a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. A positive opinion was not required. Each page is dedicated to every month of the year and what Kipper and company were doing during that month. The author is clever and uses the illustration as a "photo" that Kipper took that month and the page describes what happened on that particular outing. My 2 year old listens from Jan to December without getting bored.

An instant favorite By Ian C My son is 3½ and already had Kipper as his favorite cartoon to watch on Netflix and Amazon Instant Video, This instantly became his favorite book as well, he asks for it to be read to him every night without fail. It's a playful little story whose simple narrative traverses the 12 months of the year and its secret revealed at the end sends a sweet message about friendship.

By DD Gott I have loved every book in this Mystery Series, being one of his beta readers I get them before they are available on Amazon and I can't wait to get my nose in my reader. My little adopted granddaughter was here a few nights after I received my copy and wanted to read it. She laughed and had a great time. When the kids are out walking Amy hears a dog howling and they search till they find the dog. It has been hurt so they decide to take it to the vet to get him some help. I think it is good for children to read about other kids their age or at least close that is so helpful and want to get help for the dog and find his owner. To me this series takes the place of stories like Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys, it is great that someone like Paul wants to write for the kids of today. Don't miss the next episode in the Mystery series, it's another good one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lovely story! By Amazon Customer I love Paul Moxham's mystery series! I'm one of his beta readers, so you can blame me for any glaring grammar problems. This time, I got to read the beta version aloud to a family of four kids, ages 6 to 11. They had so much fun interrupting with their ideas of where the story was going! Kids truly enjoy these stories. The Howling Dog is slightly different from the other stories in that the four main characters are more proactive than in previous tales. This does not take away from the enjoyment at all. As an adult, I sometimes find a few of the scenarios improbable, but they appeal to children's imaginations and fuel great discussions of "What do you think will happen?" and "What would you do?"
