It has turned out to be one the best gifts I've ever received. Jerome's witty ramblings are the funniest I've ever read. Mark Twain, who I also love to read, comes close to Jerome's style but, in my opinion, is a poor second. Jerome finds humor in the commonplace and the every day occurrences which all of us, even a good 100 years later, can identify with. Starting with his self-diagnosis of every ailment, excepting house-maid's knee, to his singular insights into his friends, self, and surroundings; I never tire of rereading this book. It becomes clear quickly that the dog, Montmorency, is the only one with any sense. Three Men and a Boat always cheers me after a cold, bleak winter. It's the best Spring tonic--I highly recommend an annual dose. I shop now for gifts to give to friends so they can share my enjoyment in this wonderfully humorous and offbeat book. Read, enjoy, and laugh often.

That about describes "Three Men in a Boat : To Say Nothing of the Dog," Jerome K. Jerome's enchanting comic novel about three young men (to say nothing of the dog) who discover the "joys" of roughing it.The three men are George, Harris and the narrator, who are all massive hypochiandriacs -- they find that they have symptoms of every disease in existance (except housemaid's knee). To prop up their failing health, they decide to take a cruise down the Thames in a rented boat, camping and enjoying nature's bounty.Along with Monty -- an angelic-looking, devilish terrier -- the three friends set off down the river. But they find that not everything is as easy as they expected. They get lost in hedge mazes, end up going downstream without a paddle, encounter monstrous cats and vicious swans, have picnics navigate locks, offend German professors, and generally get into every kind of trouble they possibly can...Even though it was published more than a century ago, "Three Men in a Boat" remains as freshly humorous as when it was first published. While editor/playwright/author Jerome K. Jerome wrote a lot of other books, this book remains his most famous. And once you've read it, you'll see why.Jerome's real talent is in finding humor in everyday things, like trying to erect a tent in the woods, getting seasick, or questioning whether it's safe to drink river water. Written in Jerome's dry, goofy prose, these little occurrances become immensely funny. One of the funniest parts of the book is when the boys listen to a fishermen telling of his prowess, only to accidently knock down his record-breaking stuffed fish.... and discover it's made out of plaster. Oops.But Jerome takes a break from the humor near the end, when the boys find a drowned woman floating in the river. And here he becomes solemn and quietly compassionate: "She had sinned - some of us do now and then - and her family and friends, naturally shocked and indignant, had closed their doors against her."But back on the funny stuff. The capstone on all this humor is the "three men." These guys are basically pampered Victorian aristocrats, who have a romantic yearning for the great outdoors. You'll be laughing at them and with them, as they struggle through the basics of boating and camping.It's worth noting that the Digireads edition of this book is very good, with a flexible cover, extremely strong binding, and a nice reproduction with rather small print. Think "Dover Thrift," but of higher quality.Funny, wacky and creepily true to life, "Three Men in a Boat" is an enduring comic classic in the vein of PG Wodehouse. Not to mention the dog!

Johnson I want to be clear; this is specifically for the Kindle edition of this book. The actual content, the book itself, would get five stars. It's a great book, huge fun to read, shockingly undated given its age, and I could not have asked for more entertainment once I read it.I did not, however, manage to finish the book in this Kindle edition. This is perhaps the 25th book or so I have read in this format, and I have grown sadly used to the number of typographical errors and layout problems that lace the majority of the works, but this one I couldn't get through. There are hard returns throughout the book that presumably mark the end of the original line in the text. Unfortunately, they do not correspond to the end of the lines on the Kindle's screen, regardless of the text size, so literally every other line on the screen is one two three words long. It was too disconcerting to get used to, and finally I went through the trouble of downloading a public domain copy from Gutenberg and transferring that over to my Kindle.Maybe I am oversensitive to this problem, but do yourself a favor and look at the sample of the book before you purchase it. If I had done so I never would have bought it, regardless of the price. 5 stars for the content; 1 star for the edition.

Happily surprised by this rat adventure story By Janet Hamilton Summary: Joey isn’t very excited about moving to the city, and isn’t much comforted when Uncle Patrick shows up with a gift—a new pet rat. That night, though, the rat talks to Joey, and the next thing Joey knows, he has turned into a rat himself. The rat sends him on a quest, and Joey the rat discovers the Lower Realm, a kingdom of rats and other creatures that lives throughout the city. Joey notices that most of the rats are armed, so he decides to grab a plastic spork he sees stuck in a stale biscuit. He pulls it out, and all the rats fall silent. It turns out that spork is Excalibur, the Spork in the Scone, and the fact that Joey has pulled it out means he is destined to be a hero. And the adventure begins….Pros: I’ll admit, my expectations of a book called Ratscalibur written a TV writer were pretty low. I was happily surprised by this exciting adventure story peopled (ratted?) with a cast of interesting characters. The magic (or ragic, as it’s called in the rat world) has a complicated set of rules which were fun to learn about, and there’s a surprising twist near the end which seems to lay the groundwork for a sequel.Cons: Many of the Arthurian allusions will be lost on young readers. Indeed, I have a feeling quite a few were lost on this older reader.

Even those not sure about fantasy should recognize how cool it would be to be transformed into a hero. Especially if that hero is (ugh) a rat.What I loved as an adult was the fun Lieb had playing with the Arthurian legend and a dash of Tolkien. Hee-hee-hee.

The language captures junior high school kid-speak in a poetic way. And he's consistent in the various species as they are represented. Thank you, late night host who recommended this new book by his writer, but he shall be unnamed because this review is of Josh Loeb.

About the Author Christopher Darlington Morley (1890 1957), American novelist, journalist, poet, and essayist, is the author of more than 100 novels, books of essays, and volumes of poetry. He was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford, and after returning to America, he was an editor for "Ladies Home Journal" and wrote for the "New York Evening Post" and other newspapers. He was one of the founders of the "Saturday Review of Literature", and as a fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories, he helped to found the Baker Street Irregulars, a group dedicated to the study of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s Sherlock Holmes works. He was also one of the first judges for the Book-of-the-Month Club. He is probably best known for his novel "Kitty Foyle", which was an instant bestseller and the basis for an Academy Award-winning movie in 1940, a radio serial, and a television series.

I first read it in childhood and found it to be entertaining, much like Alice in Wonderland.Many (30!) years later I felt a desire to revisit the story and, only recently, was able to buy a copy through a Used Book dealer in Maine. It was worth the search!The story says so many different things, things the We ALL need to hear, when read with adult's eyes. The clearest message of all... go ahead and search the world for your dream of "something better" - but don't be suprised when you find that "something" right at home!If you get a copy of this book share it with those you care about... especially your children.

The first one I read was, The Haunted Bookshop and Where the Blue Begins is just as good, but in a different way. It seems to be a tale for children, but when you really read, you find that it is Mr. Morley's search for God and what is important in life. There are many memorable lines to enjoy for a lifetime.

Genial and Accomplished By Pop Bop Christopher Morley, (1890-1957), is remembered primarily as an essayist, novelist and poet whose most well known works, ("Parnassus on Wheels" and "The Haunted Bookshop"), followed the experiences of bookseller Roger Mifflin. He was one of the founders of "The Saturday Review of Books", and collaborated with the likes of Don Marquis, (of "Archy and Mehitabel" fame), and Ogden Nash. He was very much a man of his literary, New York City times and was known to be gregarious and good humored. All of that is abundantly evident in this book, which is a testament to his enduring appeal."Where the Blue Begins" was written in 1922, a few years after the Mifflin novels, and is generally categorized as a "satirical novel", but that's a bit harsh given its rather genial tone. The characters are all recognizable human types, but presented in the physical guise of dogs. This allows for a great deal of sly humor involving tale wagging, wet noses, and the like, and some even more subtle jokes allowing dog species to stand in as character comments; (what species of dog would you choose to be the local vicar?). When you think about it, T.S. Eliot did the same sort of thing for cats, and I'd actually read Henry James if it had more cows and horses.Anyway, our hero, Gissing, goes gallivanting off to seek new horizons, (where the blue begins), and has adventures. The results are amusing and instructive. This can be read as a child's adventure tale or as a more serious contemplative work, depending on one's inclinations and situation.However you approach it, this is an accomplished work by a gifted author at the height of his powers. It suffers not at all from being dated; it may even work better now for that reason. I have read and listened to many other spiritual teachers and, for me, Tolle is the most calming and mind changing. He has a wonderful sesnse of humour, a quiet tranquil way of talking and gently points out how crazily our human minds work. If I wake up in the morning out of sorts or uptight I just listen to some of a Tolle CD. It always gives me a better perspective on whatever is getting to me and puts me a much more peaceful state to start my day.Tolle has written several books and done a series of CDs that include his workshops and readings of his books. They all have something slightly different to offer. This particular CD "Finding Your Life's Purpose" is, I think, his best. I highly recommend it particularly to those who want to find that seemingly unattainable peace of mind.

Tolle and people who've never heard of him By Amazon Customer Having read The Power of Now and A New Earth, I was curious to find out if this CD set offered anything new from E. Tolle. It does, the CDs are good for people already familiar with E. Tolle's work as well as people who have never heard of him, like my son.My 18 year old son was in the car with me with me when I first listened to the CDs and he was intrigued by them. My son said that E. Tolle's voice was very soothing and peaceful, and that the author had some interesting things to say. My son hasn't ready any of Tolle's books. So I guess the material in this CD set is good for both, people who have never heard of Tolle (like my son) and for people who already know him (like me).The two CDs make up one talk, so it's best if you listen to them in sequence the first time around. After that, I've left any of the two disks in the car CD player and when it plays I get something more out of it that somehow I didn't get the first time.The author leads you to a discussion of our life's purpose, he speaks about a primary and a secondary purpose and how by focusing too much on our secondary purpose, we may miss out on the primary purpose of our lives, which is to live in the now. The talk leaves you with a deep sense of peace and joy.Today my son asked me to play "that guy's CD, the one with the soothing voice". I guess he's ready to read E. Tolle's books.

30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Tolle Helps Silence Repetitive Thought By Nalts Ever notice that your thoughts - especially the negative ones - are fairly repetitive? Find it hard to sit still and empty the mind, much less meditate? Then Tolle is a great place to start. I definitely wouldn't start with a live lecture, but one of his earlier studio readings. He's more articulate when recorded, and has a way of coming across in live audio as a bit crazy... with this nervous laugh. Tolle's great 101 reading for discovering self awareness and positivity and spirituality, because it's hard to access these if you're living in your brain. The underlying theme is that the brain is an organ that, left unchecked, will spew insanity. I do believe that people who live in the brain (as opposed to the "heart" or soul) are missing a lot of life, and have since discovered that the brain can be trusted as long as you don't define yourself in the brain. That you realize it's an organ to be used, not a master. My two cents: a) Tolle for an accessible start to higher living, and b) studio recordings first since the live events (while shorter) are not nearly as good. I've listened to Tolle's studio recordings many times, and still play them in my car when I'm feeling too attached to stupid things like work or people's perceptions of me.Bottom line: Tolle readied me to be open to The Secret, Wayne Dyer, Louise Hayes and now some of the even deeper ideas I wouldn't have tolerated 2 years ago.
