By marianne kozbial Thanks to Entangled Teen for the eARC!Last year, I read Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini, the first book I've read about parallel worlds and other-selves. Because I really enjoyed Trial by Fire, I was approached to review Through Fire & Sea. These books definitely had a similar vibe, with other-selves in other-worlds, but they were also very different, and I'm happy to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Through Fire & Sea!The beginning of Through Fire & Sea throws a lot at the reader right away - there's a lot of otherworldly jargon very quick in the beginning - but once I figured out what was going on, I found it a lot easier to get into the story. In the story, the land where Leah is from is being attacked by a dragon. As a way to get rid of the dragon, the duke sends Leah, his illegitimate daughter, with Qeturah, a sorceress who can send the dragon away. Qeturah teaches Leah that she can call her otherselves from mirror worlds, and from there, Leah and her otherself Holly's lives become intertwined.One thing I was at first skeptical about but ended up really loving about Through Fire & Sea was the way it combined a totally fantastical world with the world we know and live in. The way Nicole Luiken wove the two worlds together was both fascinating and extremely well executed. It was really cool to see the juxtaposition between the two worlds and their characters.Similarly to how the two very different worlds mixed together well, I really enjoyed how each character had a double in the other world and seeing how they could act similarly or completely differently. Like I said earlier in the review, even though this aspect was really similar to Trial by Fire, the execution was absolutely different and just as enjoyable. Another great thing about the two different characters was seeing how Leah, who lived in a world that felt like it was from long ago, reacted to Holly's modern world. Both Leah and Holly were strong and independent in their own ways, but it always felt like they were two separate and very different people.The entire concept behind Through Fire & Sea was so interesting and I really enjoyed the journey. I'm so excited to see where Nicole Luiken goes with the rest of the mirror worlds in the Otherselves series. Book two will not come soon enough! I highly recommend this for fans of fantasy, parallel worlds, and Trial by Fire!

This was so much more fun than I expected it to be By portia ertley-sumpter I received this ARC from Entangled Teen in exchange for an honest review.This was so much more fun than I expected it to be! I'm going to try to describe things without using any spoilers!In this book, there is the True World, and 4 other worlds. The two worlds present here are Fire, which is ruled by volcanoes, and Water, which is our world. Everyone has an otherself in each world. But most people aren't aware of that. It requires magic and mirrors, and knowledge of the other worlds, of course.This story has 2 perspectives, Leah from Fire world and Holly from the Water world. (The back and forth could have been annoying, but I really enjoyed it.) Through a series of events, Leah becomes aware of the other worlds, and learns that she is a Caller, someone who can communicate with the other worlds. But there is someone trying to use Leah's gift for her own evil deeds.In these two worlds, we also have the 2 love interests. They are SPECIAL. And totally lovable. But someone is trying to kill them and destroy the worlds they live in, and the girls must learn to communicate and work together to save the ones they love and the place they call home.Even though they were the same person, they were completely different kinds of people. The author was able to create heroines that I actually really like, and the boys too. I especially loved Holly and Ryan, but felt so much for Leah also. The world that Luiken created was so interesting. The system for using the mirrors and accessing the world was interesting and fun. I absolutely LOVED the fantasy elements used in the book. Everything moved at a great pace, and the end was really exciting.I knew going into this that it would be a series, as everything is now. I didn't know whether to expect a huge cliffhanger or not. But I was so pleased with how it ended. It wrapped up a lot of things, while still leaving an opening for the next book. I mean, there are still 3 worlds that we haven't even been to yet! While I know that Leah will be a large part of the next book, I hope that we still get some Holly and Ryan time.I will definitely be looking out for the sequel! Thanks, Entangled!!**EDIT: I forgot to mention, this book needs some serious editing. But I accepted that as a flaw of an ARC. Hopefully its fixed before it releases!!**

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inventive and exciting! By The Tale Temptress I just finished reading this book last night, so it's fresh on my mind. This was unlike almost anything else I've read in a long time, because it was so very unique. Notice I had a little bit of trouble classifying the genre at the top of the post. It is definitely young adult, but part of the story takes place in a fantastical world, while part of it takes place in the real world, and/or the present day/time/place.I don't really want to tell you anything more than that because you really just need to experience this one for yourself. I'm afraid I would ruin it for readers if I went into explaining the concepts of the mirrors and the Otherselves too much more than what the summary has already done. So let's talk characters.I loved these characters. They were so well-crafted. Even though Holly/Leah and Ryan/His Otherself, are mirror images of each other from Fire and Water worlds, they are each completely unique. These are not carbon copies when it comes to personality. I love how the author was able to make them so different while they looked and sounded so similar, and even shared some traits. Leah was smart, strong, and brave, while Holly was smart, world-savvy, but a little more shy. Ryan is sweet, but determined and self-sacrificing, while his otherself is dark, brooding, but nevertheless brave and honorable.I don't read a lot of fantasy-type stories... so typically, the very things about this book that made it so "different" and "fantasy-like", might not have captured me quite so much if not for the characters. The characters made me care about them. They are what pulled me in and made me want to know what was going on, and to really invest myself into these differing worlds.The author did an amazing job in her world-building, in crafting such a unique setting and story concept. This story seemed to have it all. There is a fantasy world, magic, divergent settings, romances to die for, and an amazing villain. The writing was simple when it needed to be, poignant at other times, and tight and fast at others. It sucked me in so quickly and kept my attention riveted. The pacing was spot on, and before I knew it, I looked up and I was done with the book. I will definitely be looking for the second installment in this series. This was an amazing, spellbinding start that swept me away completely.

Comfy return By Greyhaunt I've always loved this series, but I have to confess that with the last few books I've found myself rather missing some of that which originally drew me to it. Where is cousin Horace and his gorilla suit? Surely he hasn't discarded his furry ways. Why does Michael seem relegated to just someone who keeps the kids out of the way while Meg investigates things? Even Spike, the terrible one, seems rather downplayed this time out. And Meg's blacksmithing - such an incredibly unique profession for a cozy mystery detective - seems to have been referred to in the last several offerings as something she hopes to do more, yet never seems to. I'd really like to see that come back to some prominence in one of the books.Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book and devoured it in one evening as I have every book in the series, but I rather miss some of the "old friends" and fear that the introduction of new ones will just push them further away.

Growing up and Getting Real By Mother Raphaela The characters and situations in this series continue to develop: Meg Langslow is maturing from the hysterically funny and therefore slightly hysterical young woman of "Murder with Peacocks" who was fearful of commitment and living as far from her family as possible to being now (a number of years later) the mother of growing twin boys who better understands and appreciates the dynamics of family and parenthood.Andrew's plots have always been well crafted. They are becoming more serious now, literally bringing Meg's family together, with the serious healing that brings to her ever-less-dysfunctional family, As a result, Andrews is settling down to more realistic, less manic plots. Don't get me wrong -- I enjoyed the "laugh a minute" style of the first books in the series, because that's who Meg was at the time, but all of the characters are gradually maturing, perhaps I would even say becoming more believable, and for that reason, what happens to them has also become much more important. We won't mind when Meg's hand gets better and we hear more about her iron-crafting, but this is the book that tells the story of her grandmother's joining the family, and at the same time, the ending seems to be paving the way for showcasing the entire family's creativity. Michael and the boys could not realistically have been center stage in this book: Grandmother Cordelia was a woman seriously frightened for her life, acting the part of an elderly recluse who could not have handled boisterous 4-year-old twins boys.If you take a book like this seriously enough to read it more than once, you realize how much the author has put into it. Andrews is doing a great job juggling an enormous family and cast of characters. She doesn't focus on every person the same way in every book, and that keeps us looking for what will happen next, seeing that she eventually catches up with everyone.I look forward to getting to know grandmother Cordelia better. Michael might well have more focus soon, too -- we're left with that bit of a cliff-hanger: Meg and her grandmother are kindred spirits, and it seems logical that Michael will be drawn to this newly-discovered relation just as he's dawn to his wife. I confess I don't see how the boys can be center stage with that yet, but Andrews is good at bridging the age gap, and I'm not just saying it -- I really am looking forward to seeing what she does with the next book!

12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Sometimes Less Is More By Zoeeagleeye I've never been impressed with authors who physically beat up their heroines. They usually do it for one of two reasons. Either they want to "prove" that their "girl" is "tough." or at least as tough as any man, or they are looking for the sympathy vote as they make their heroine a victim. For an author who strives to give her heroine as much smarts, strength and opportunities as any male, Donna Andrews has fallen far short of her goals in this book. As for the victim thing, she is outrageously out of date and out of style for the times. Meg Langslow spends the entire book hurt and getting further hurt and the last 30 pages were ruined for me as she does one stupid, inept, duh thing after another.In "The Good, the Bad, and the Emus" Andrews proves once again that she doesn't handle action scenes very smoothly. It's as if she simply cannot imagine the action she is writing about. She takes a competent, strong, smart, imaginative woman and turns her into a total dunce in the last 30 pages.I've read all of Andrews books. They are deliciously unique with memorable characters, lots of fun and plenty of excitement. But when it comes to action they each hold too many characters who fall apart or stand by idly. Michael is one of the most underwritten characters of all -- a temptingly sexy, viral, interesting man who spends all his time standing about or taking care of the kids. Meg talks more to aging P.I. Stanley than she does to her own husband. What is the point of Rose Noire? A rather fascinating character, she is used only to mention a fact or two, or to spell Meg from mother duties. Dad is a little boy who is always running to and from a scene of trauma. Rob seems to have no sense and so does senseless things or nothing at all. The only truly active character in the book is Spike the Dog, and he can be quite irritating. This book even has a do-nothing chief of police for the most part.So, the last 30 pages. Would any sensible 90-year old woman head butt a Valkyrie? Not on your life? Read it and weep in this book. Would a 90-year old woman jump vigorously up and down on a metal cellar door? Nope. Andrews talks about "brittle bones," but apparently in a failure of imagination, she cannot visualize what that means. But Meg is so passive that even a 90-year old shows her up. She comes to on the floor, the killer leaves and what does she do? Try to get up? No. Crawl away? No. She chats with the woman beside her unraveling some of the mystery. Not the time! But wait, it gets even more laughable. There they are, Meg and the old woman, outside in the still night air with perhaps a hundred people close by who could help them. As they both get away temporarily from the killer they both worry about how to raise the alarm. Hello? Have neither of you vocal cords? A sudden scream would raise all hell at that time of night and be heard for miles, let alone just a 100 feet away! And don't tell me the emus knocked down the emu-proof fence, yet again! But of course they did, for we need to have yet another way to batter Meg. The dogs attack the killer who never thinks of shooting them? No, because for the sake of a laugh, if not common sense, we must be given a picture of a large dog sitting on the killer -- something it has done before in another book. Proving once again that Andrews can visualize doing nothing much better than doing something.Andrews also is timid about emotions. Meg suffers through a whole host of them -- and rightly so -- but alas, no release for her or for us as she keeps them hidden inside. We do not see a crucial reunion -- the two go inside the house and shut the door. Again, no emotional release or full-circle moment. Mother shows up, an incidental character who is the high-hand who shuts off the two who are reconciling in private in a very clumsy way. But the biggest reunion falls flat. Grandfather, always a man of many words and damn the consequences comes face to face with a hugely important person from his past and all he can do is dither and squeak, "Morning," "Er . . . likewise," "Um, yes," his entire catalogue of emotional outpouring.And, finally, not to be mean, I love kids, but I do not love Meg's kids. Andrews writes the boys as just another pained trial for Meg, who dips in and out of their lives just as they are either entering or leaving some horrible mischief. They have no manners and act like barbarians. They are always disagreeable and always seem to be competitive with each other in a 'boys will be boys' stereotype as odious as the 'female as victim' stereotype. Josh, upon seeing his mother (did Andrews forget what Meg looks like at this point in the plot?) filthy, bruised and bandaged, has his first words be that Daddy has brought you a doggie bag, can I have your bacon. Really? Can we make these boys a little more human?Even though for me the last 30 pages were a bust, and the emus were explained and detailed far too much, still the book had a very good plot and I would lend it to someone to read, if asked, and smile while doing it.

If I were to generally describe these stories I would say they were about lessons learned and also about an impact or influence someone had. They are about kids and parents of all ages. Some of the stories are about the parents learning the lesson or having someone impact or influence them and some are about the kids.I think Chicken Soup For the Soul books are great to keep around and they are wonderful to give as gifts. The stories are only a couple pages each so you can finish a story in a short time. It is a book you can pick up from time to time, even choosing what story you want to read or you can read it cover to cover. Some are going to really touch you and others may not, but what is nice is that these stories are true and good. In a world where we know so much about the bad things going on around us, I like to be reminded of the true and good things going on too!My favorite story from Chicken Soup For the Soul Raising Great Kids is one titled Love, Mom. It is about a mom who writes a note in her daughters lunch every day. The mom does not ask the daughter if she reads the notes until much later in the school year. She finds out that the notes are actually read out load with the friends her daughter eats with and they all love them. Her notes were impacting her daughter, her daughter's friends and knowing they all have enjoyed and loved them every day it impacts the mom too! I write notes occasionally in my sons lunch, but now after reading this story I want to include one in every lunch too!If you are looking for a good gift this Christmas, Chicken Soup For the Soul Raising Great Kids would be good for anyone who is a parent or grandparent. This is a book you could give to someone you know well or even hardly know. I think I will give it to my mom this Christmas (because I think she raised "great kids")!

However, after reading some of the stories, I began to see how maybe the publishers came up with it. There are a number of ingredients needed to raise great kids and one of them is to teach by example. And many of the stories are about just that element to parenting.There are many sweet stories of life lessons learned from parents, and also some that parents learn from their children.This book is a rich collection of such stories. Woven together with joy, gratitude, love, hope and life's sweetest surprises, these anecdotes are sure to warm your heart...and encourage you to look for and appreciate similar moments in your own life. I love to use these books especially with reluctant readers. The story was good and the sound effects were terrific. Most of my children wanted to read it repeatedly. That is always a nice thing. I like these read-along storybooks a lot.

They really enjoy the movie, but they love putting the CD on and taking turns showing each other the pictures and following along in this book. They almost have it memorized by now, and we've only had it for two weeks.

The Mad Hatter shows Alice different things and explains about their Mutual Ownership of everything in Blunderland. I think it's the author's satire of communism and socialism. He shows things to the extreme--what happens where people share EVERYTHING in common. This isn't spectacularly written, but it's free and doesn't take long to read.

By TreeTX Holly has finally opened up enough to admit her feelings for Sean., but there's still that lingering longing to be with Jared. She feels a kinship to him, a feeling of understanding his dark places. Sean is her savior on many occasions, but has become that one person who can make her feel loved, cherished, all while doing dark and dirty things to her. She's figuring out what she likes...and doesn't like. We meet new characters, new problems arise, and emotions are cranked up a few notches higher. I'm loving this series! The look into the BDSM world opens your eyes to parts of this world that you don't often get to see. Its making you wonder if maybe you are too safe, or if you might be a bit more on the dangerous side. Great read. I'm really looking forward to the next book. I can't wait to see the next path these characters travel!!!

Their sex is rough, raw, hot but she doesn't feel completely safe with him his a bit to random for her, lives life on the edge and flips in a matter of seconds he can also be very careless and reckless and sometimes has no regard for her safety.Whereas Sean is calculated there is a purpose for everything he does there's a reason even though she may not see it. Holly being Holly she walks around in a bubble and doesn't open her eyes to the real world and she is very naive sometimes but has a heart of gold even though when she f*^&$ up its epic!!There are once again lots of moving parts Sean and Jared break her many times where her head is left spinning and she doesn't know right from wrong.Sean head f%^&* her (and us) with his games that he plays but everything is calculated.Jared and Sean had a turmoiled relationship they hate each other everything is a competition even Holly but then it changes.Holly shows Sean the light and the importance of family while Sean opens her eyes to the BDSM world and let's just say that didn't go down.S*&^ hit the fan and Holly flees to her safe place her bff deacon.At the end we see Holly happy but who does she end up with?Who wins her heart overall?Can Jared the Goth rock god hold onto her Does the sadist get his way and win her over?There were a few parts in this book where we wanted to through our kindle and there are parts where we just thought holy s*&^ you are a whore but some parts we wanted to cry right alongside Holly cause we could see the game Sean was playing.The only thing that we thought was a bit excessive was the sex between Sean and Holly it sort of brought a whole new meaning to f*&^ like rabbits!! (A saying we say in Australia) there was a s*&^ load of sex but other than that it was another good book by Gemma Rice and still leaves our head spinning!

By Lizette 5 Super Sadist Loving STARS!!!!When you're a gemini like me, you have two sides... one who has delicate sensibilities and one who could possible sit on Satan's arm and chuckle at the dark destruction he wrecks... it's a fine line your psyche skids but skids is what I do.. and hey, at least I'm honest about it....And what do I get to full that dark side, this lady... Gemma Rice and her twisted script!!! Atleast it feeds it in a fantastical way so as to not act on those wicked urges.. but boy I can sure read bout them!Now, enough about silly madness, back to this book.Holly, seemingly in-love with the rock star Jarod and craving his dark and delicious half-brother Sean, decides to live in the moment and go where her instincts and actions take her. This leads to dramatic scenes that makes her question her relationship with Jarod as well as his sanity.In comes the knight in shining armor, Sean. He wraps Holly up in his protective embrace and at the same time toys with all her Lady Bits just enough to give her a taste of how it could between them...Holly decides to date them both and perhaps the two men can share... or NOT!She's swept up so fast and furiously in their dark world and you the reader get swept up alongside her. With each word written, with each chapter ending you've end up pushing that line between wicked and wise until you're left wondering, just as poor Holly, "am I a bad person for liking this OR is it that I've just followed my primal instincts that the modern world wishes to suppress?".....That's what she does, Ms Rice... Or rather, Advent, the season of expectation, rather than calling it Christmas which is so convoluted with Santa and Reindeer and one-up-manship gift giving. This is a nice pause from the chaos, to reflect alone or as a family. Worth the short time it takes to read and reflect.
