Nolan Stones, a half-hearted maverick on the verge of failing a philosophy degree, and his crew of dallying dreamers are spending another night setting the world to rights, whilst getting merry within the intoxicating walls of their local pub, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Little do they know that Boca, a mysterious character who basks in their bold idealistic statements about changing the world together, is sitting on an adjacent table ready to plunge them head-first into revolutionary waters. After Nolan’s meeting with eminent local philosopher, Doctor Herbert Loudrat, the group’s vehicle for changing the world reveals itself. Loudrat tells the story of King Mido, an ancient ruler who buried his crown somewhere on a local football field called Brownswall centuries ago. According to Loudrat, an ancient bylaw still exists, whereby he who finds this relic will rule over the field, independent of Great Britain. The field itself holds fond memories for the would-be revolutionaries but they soon find out that creating a Utopian state isn’t as easy as they'd always believed it to be, especially when confronted by a ruthless syndicate who want to use the land for their own ends. The King of Brownswall is a hilarious and exhilarating read that will have you laughing out loud one minute and gasping in suspense the next.

The Love of The Last Tycoon is an unfinished novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, compiled and published posthumously, in 1941. The Last Tycoon It is the story of the young Hollywood mogul Monroe Stahr, who was inspired by the life of boy-genius Irving Thalberg, and is an exposé of the studio system in its heyday. The Love of the Last Tycoon is now available for the first time in paperback.Cecilia Brady, the daughter of a great motion-picture producer, reminisces about events that began five years earlier when she was an undergraduate at Bennington College, starting with a flight home to Hollywood on a plane whose other passengers included Wylie White, a script writer down on his luck, Manny Schwartz, once an influential producer, and Monroe Stahr, another producer and partner of Cecilia's father, Pat Brady. Cecilia is attracted to Stahr, and he turns to her at the very time that he has a falling out with her father. Each of the partners conceives the idea of murdering the other. On the way to New York to establish an alibi, Stahr repents and decides to revoke his orders that will result in Brady's death, but his plane crashes before he can carry out his new plan and Cecilia loses both her father and the man she loves. Even in its incomplete form, The Love of The Last Tycoon: A Western has achieved a reputation as the best Hollywood novel. When F. Scott Fitzgerald died in 1940 he had written seventeen of thirty projected episodes. In 1941 the "unfinished novel" was published in a text for general readers by Edmund Wilson under the title The Last Tycoon. Fitzgerald wrote the novel in a blend of first person and third-person omniscient narrative. While the story is ostensibly told by Cecelia, many scenes are narrated in which she is not present. Occasionally a scene will be presented twice, once through Cecelia and once through a third party."The Love of the Last Tycoon carries the authority of a great writer working very close to the top of his form. Only scholars will need to consult the 200 pages of extensive critical apparatus included in this edition. But anyone who admires Fitzgerald will want to take another look at the 129 pages of Tycoon text, now that they have at last been printed as he would have wanted them to be." The Last Tycoon, by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Review It would have been Fitzgerald's best novel ... Even in this truncated form it not only makes absorbing reading; it is the best piece of creative writing that we have about one phase of American life - Hollywood and the movies New York Times Wonderful ... a novel about Hollywood, written from the inside Sunday Times His talent was as natural as the pattern that was made by the dust on a butterfly's wings Ernest Hemingway

About the Author Born in 1896, Fitzgerald was considered a member of the 'Lost Generation', along with Steinbeck, T.S. Eliot and Waldo Peirce. His novels epitomize the Jazz Age - a term he coined himself - and The Great Gatsby is often considered to be 'the great American novel'. In 1937, Fitzgerald moved to Hollywood to try and write himself out of debt - while there he worked on now-forgotten movies such as A Yank at Oxford. It is this insider knowledge that Fitzgerald brings to his final novel THE LAST TYCOON.

The following review of The Last Tycoon refers to the 1969 hardcover edition, published by Scribner's and edited by Edmund Wilson. The Last Tycoon by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a work of fiction but its protagonist, the enigmatic Monroe Stahr bears more than a passing resemblance to real life Hollywood icon Irving Thalberg. Thalberg was an enormously influential producer who took Hollywood by storm only to die at the tender age of 37. Quite ironically, F. Scott Fitzgerald died suddenly at the age of 44 while writing The Last Tycoon. One can only speculate as to how powerful this novel might have been had Fitzgerald lived long enough to complete and further refine the already wonderfully compelling narrative. We know from the very interesting notes written by the author and presented as a supplement to the text of this unfinished novel that Fitzgerald did not approach the creation of The Last Tycoon lightly. This was a labor undertaken with meticulous attention to plot and character development. Specific scenes were crafted to create just the right mood or get across to the reader just the right message. One would be hard pressed to name another book about the rough and tumble world of Hollywood that contains the degree of nuance found in The Last Tycoon. One of the most remarkable aspects of this work is the empathy Fitzgerald shows toward his fictional creation, the larger than life producer Monroe Stahr. As a noted author who found himself laboring over movie scripts in an era when such work was considered demeaning for real artists, one would have expected Fitzgerald to display a more cynical, less complimentary view of the movie production overlords of the 1930s....most of whom were semiliterate at best. On the contrary, Stahr is presented as a complex, supremely capable and kind individual who, though lacking in formal education, knows his business inside and out.The Last Tycoon is first and foremost about Monroe Stahr but the narration is provided by Cecelia Brady, a young woman who admires Stahr and is not so secretly in love with him. In the very first chapter, Fitzgerald has Cecelia say the following: "It's more than possible that some of the pictures Stahr himself conceived had shaped me into what I was." After reading that line, I had to wonder if Cecelia was speaking for just herself and Stahr or for all of us and Hollywood in general.Though unfinished, The Last Tycoon is an important, thought provoking book. Highly recommended.

By Sara Burton I purchased all six of these books from the Canadian Amazon website (amazon.ca) several weeks ago because I couldn't bear to wait any longer for them to show up on the American site. The covers are just gorgeous. The art is metallic and beautiful and the covers have a soft feel to them. The inside flap of the cover is perforated and is designed to be removed and used as a matching bookmark. The cover art for this set of F. Scott Fitzgerald books was designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith - the genius behind the similarly beautiful Penguin cloth-bound classics series. Not only is the literature itself classic, but the books look like a classic collector's item as well! Friends compliment me on them all the time when they see them on my bookcase!

As it is, about half of the planned chapters completed, it is wonderfully readable. And this edition is one to cherish, with its lovely period pictures.

Freedom from the Bondage of the Present and Past By Linda Fegins Book ReviewMore and more it is coming to light the thousands of young women from other countries who are brought to the United States by trick or force to serve in human trafficking , i.e. the sex slave trade. “Captured”, novelist Terri J Haynes’, suspense story opens your eyes to the plight of those caught in the bondage of human trafficking while showing how two persons with baggage from the past can find love in the midst of a negative situation. Both of the two leading characters, who have compassion for others, Savannah Elliott and Will Anderson, lives are endangered by the desire to help victims of the sex slave trade from their respective professions, social advocate and FBI Agent.Crisp writing, engaging characters and suspense will keep you “captured” to determine what will happen next and how the story will end. This book was provided by the author for an honest review.Linda FeginsBrown Girls Faith Street Team

Haynes, is the first book of the Love and Faith romance series. I love the author's style of writing. Haynes was detail and precise. This story was entertaining that kept me on my toes with each page. A quick read with twist and turns. The dynamics of the characters intertwined to make this book an excellent page turner. The characters are real and you could relate to them. The dialogue was great- it move smoothly. It started a little slowly but picks up the speed. I love the storyline even though it was peppered with a dose of violence. It was a heartful story of connection! The theme of this story is human trafficking, dysfunctional family units, secrets, painful pasts, and a dedication for humankind. The story is about Will, a dedicated, understanding, and straight to the point FBI agent and Savannah who works for a non profit organization to help victims of human trafficking. They began to work together on a case in DC. Will is trying to handle his work load and "fatherhood" before he transfers. Savannah is trying to deal with her dysfunctional family and secret past life before coming to DC.I think this book lived up to my expectations and the author did a superior job of writing. I normally do not read romantic suspense books but I loved this book because I could relate to the characters in the book. While reading, I felt as though I was apart of the story.I would recommend this book with 5 stars. I will definitely read more by this author. I will be waiting anxiously for the second book in this Love and Faith series. This book was provided by the author for an honest review.QueenieBrown Girls Faith Street Team

I am huge fan of suspense fiction and of African American fiction and to have them both merged together so well is a joy to me. Haynes does a great job building the characters of both protagonists while weaving the story together. When it was done I wanted more - I wanted to stay in Savannah's world and little longer and see what came next for her. If you are on the fence about this title, don't hesitate. It was a great read and I look forward to more from this author.

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Final Visit from Jeeves and Bertie By Mr. Orlando R. Barone Aunts Aren't Gentlemen is P.G. Wodehouse's very last story about Bertie Wooster and his stoically brilliant gentleman's personal gentleman, Jeeves. In fact, when the original book, under the title "The Catnappers," was published in the USA in 1975, the cover noted that the author had very recently "died in his sleep." He was 93 and never retired from writing his non-scathing satire of the British leisure class. This gentle book opens with a fairly jarring scene as Bertie, motoring to a Dr. Murgatroyd to have a suspicious rash diagnosed, finds himself trapped in a near-riotous demonstration -- this is the 70's, you know -- and thus begins the set-up of the complications that will ensue as Bertie makes his way to a vacation spot to cure the spots.Things settle down, a complicated but easy to follow plot unfolds, Jeeves ties up the many loose ends, and there are laughs aplenty as comeupances come up and young (though less attractive than usual) love triumphs. As the final appearance of Jeeves and Bertie makes this a bittersweet but historic volume, I give it 5 stars. It would otherwise have gotten 4 since characterizations are not Wodehouse strong, and a little laziness creeps into the narrative in spots. This novel was published almost simultaneously with the terrific BBC TV series Jeeves and Wooster starring the fabulous team of Hugh Laurie (now Dr. House!) and Stephen Fry (see him in 2009's "Bones"). The book hit No. 1 in England and was popular in the US as well. It stands as a lovely memorial to an inspired fictional creation by the inspiring P.G. Wodehouse.Your Voice Is Your Business

His valet Jeeves advices him to go immediately to a doctor. Not being a person that ignores good advice Bertie catches a cab and gets on his way to Doctor E. Jimpson Murgatroyd. Suddenly his car gets invaded by the notorious Orlo Porter. Luckily Porter does not immediately recognise Bertie, because if he would, the day would not turn out that well. When his doctor advises Bertie to take a break and leave for the countryside, an adventure starts where Porter and an illustrious cat will play a major role.P.G. Wodehouse is known for his bizarre characters that are put in crazy situations. Aunts Aren't Gentlemen is certainly no exception to this. This book is the last one where Bertie Wooster and his faithful valet Jeeves play the main parts. Although the story itself almost breaks the boundaries of acceptable silliness, it gives cause to some quite entertaining confrontations. Of course Bertie gets tricked into doing things he was not intending on doing, but always seems able to make the best of it. Jeeves' actions are not that pronounced this time, although his few interventions are hilarious. And if you ever want to know why cats can make you win horse races, then this is the book to read.

It's the customary story about rather dotty upper class types that those of us who read the author's works know well. I think of these stories, whenever they are supposed to take place, as really happening in the summer of 1913, before the world changed so drastically in the world wars. Maybe that's why the books remain so popular.

"Great fun!"—Ben Schott, author of Schott’s Original Miscellany "Sharp satire with a poetic heart"—The B&N Review "With lacerating satire, these short stories, riffs, and other insanities will make you laugh...Seth Kaufman is a modern master of comedy."—Karl Wolf, Chicago Center for Literature and Photography Hilarious and wildly inventive, The War Against Boredom is a welcomed assault on the mind-numbing effects of the modern world. Reverse-engineering obsessions with Big Data, the Internet, movies, coffee shops, pot, spying, rock stars, relationships and sex scandals, Seth Kaufman morphs reality into comedy with 21 short stories and satirical columns. The pieces, two of which originally ran on newyorker.com, are must reads for fans of The Onion and of Kaufman's acclaimed novel The King of Pain. Notable skirmishes in The War Against Boredom: • A husband hires a business consultant to help improve his marriage. • An assistant engineer recalls working with Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury and a llama. • An insurance actuary becomes a star by decoding the odds for the Academy Awards. • A caustic National Security Administration advice columnist answers questions and exposes employees. • Cheech and Chong reunite over a golden hookah. • A hardcore techie conducts a bizarre old school search for love in “Segway in Overdrive.”

The title sums it up By Kindle Customer This reads rather like a set of New Yorker magazine humor pieces, generally short, satirical, and sometimes with an element of social commentary, such as the one inspired by a designer who, seemingly in all sincerity, suggested that brightly colored handbags would make New York strong again after 9/11.The thoughts of the self-absorbed and self-important are the major themes, whether it's the natural state of a high school stoner who imagines saving the world and winning the girl with weed, or a tech geek who falls, at least for a moment, for a woman on the subway. The content is suitable for reader of any age, though older readers are more likely to pick up on the references.

Not a chance - no way, nada. Under no circumstances am I going skinny dipping. Some things should never be seen in public.

But then that Inner Voice starts nagging about "what's the point of a bucket list if it doesn't involve risk?" Well, excuse me Inner-Voice, I'm quite aware of that, but it's not you that has to live with the consequences. Oh, the shame, the embarrassment....

And what if someone mis-identifies me and I get harpooned. You won't be feeling so clever then, will you, Inner Voice? I've just told you - we're not doing it and that's it. I am strong-willed, and you can't make me, Inner Voice. Just stop and....

I think me and Inner Voice need to have a little talk.

A great series of empowering yourself, plus it's hilarious at times By Denise Gardner 'Go Skinny Dipping' was definitely an enlightening experience for Sam. I've really gotten to know Sam and she keeps me entertained and laughing out loud a lot. Max is confusing me at this point. Stephanie seems to be a good friend yet she is dating Max. I look forward to reading the rest of this series. A great add to your tbr list. This short story is fun and all the books in this series is a great inspiration for anyone who has flaws, inside and out.

The antics of the heroine make me smile and continue to the next book ever-growing! I really hope she and Max get together by the end!

It’s 1998 and a small group of Montana teenagers are rapidly stumbling towards their high school graduation. As the boys wile away their last days of real youth they have no concerns and their only goal is to continue as they always have: drinking, stealing and having a good time. As graduation day approaches the boys come to realize that the juvenile games they have been playing have very real consequences in the grownup world.

From the very unusual beginning to the action-packed end, I thought this book was especially well-written -- particularly for a first-time author. To me, the most appealing aspect of this book was Ryan's ability to mix subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) humor into even the most serious situation. The author has a GREAT sense of humor, and there were times that I actually had to put the book down to wipe the tears from my eyes. In addition, Ryan has a way with dialogue. Although the conversations between the characters served as the main means of character development, as the book progressed the characters grew increasingly more intricate and realistic until, by the end, it became hard not to sympathize with some of the bad guys even as I was rooting for the hero. In my opinion, "The Junkyard Dogs" is a darn good read and an impressive first work.

It’s basically what the Dukes of Hazzard would have been if it aired on HBO and the Duke boys were just a bunch of delinquent high school kids in Montana.
