It's fun. It's quick. It's adventurous in a number of ways. It's a very meaningful and insightful book. Unfortunately, it's also the type of book that people are going to read and dismiss as nothing more than more-than-successful-than-most attempt at Thompson-like Gonzo insanity.Which is too bad. Mr. Berkeley is a phenomenal stylist, but his writing is anything but superficial. The All-Inclusive Church of Cancun is a story of the narrator and his mysterious friend, the writer of religious-themed fiction, Professor Calico. Professor Calico gets the idea of starting their own religion/cult in the Tequila Hotel in Cancun. The narrator then proceeds to experience a number of drug and booze-drenched existential misadventures with a South American Heavy Metal band the Sugar Skulls. The core of the story isn't necessarily any sort of traditional idea of plot. It's about the thoughts and observations of the linguistically-adept narrator. There are any number of paragraphs in the story that could be stand-alone poems...and I mean that in a good way. I got dizzy-drunk (and somewhat envious) trying to keep up with Berkeley's turns of phrase and metaphors.The book is dense with thematic motifs. Ultimately, it seems to me to be the classic story of a protagonist on a hopeless and misguided search for "The Answer." Whether it's the "green light" at the other side of the bay or the American (or Mexican) Dream. Life is absurd. There are no real answers. No solutions. You either accept the ride, or jump out and hope for the best. Berkeley applies the use of Greek, Viking, Hindu, Mayan and Aztec lore to help accentuate this theme of illusory order, sense and non-chaos that humans have chosen to believe in since the dawn of civilization. The narrator seems to know that all of his efforts are futile, but he continues with them, regardless, and, by the end, his goals even evolve, somewhat. But this is life. It's all futile, ultimately, but that doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed and taken to its extremes in the meantime.It's not a hopeless story, though, I don't think. Berkeley seems to think there is a true spirituality to be found, of sorts. And the characters dabble in or skirt the edges of such a spirituality. Through traditional means of accessing and experiencing such experiences, the various characters imbibe various drugs, perform music and tell stories of various legends and myths. Characters seem to fall in a kind of love and to find meaning, or at least camaraderie, with each other...even though they're all fully-inebriated outcasts. Or, maybe that's precisely why they can find some sort of twisted but genuine connection with each other. Life, perhaps, is worth it for its own sake. Not for any specific end. The ends are just an excuse for the journey. That sort of thing.Again, it would be easy and lazy to gaze upon all the bad craziness Berkeley has wrought and dismiss it as a fun by ultimately meaningless bit of whimsy. But it would be a serious mistake. Berkeley has given the read a lot of chew on and consider. He is an exciting writer, and one with a lot to say. I look forward to reading more from him.
