The copy provided to Vine reviewers originally was a promo copy that was not complete. I've since purchased the complete version of the book and it makes a world of difference. The promise that was in the promo was fulfilled in the final book. It's a cute way to teach children art concepts while drawing fun comics.Learning to draw by drawing comics comes naturally in my family. When I was a little girl, my older brother and I would try to draw the Peanuts characters from the Sunday comics. Each week, he would try to draw the whole strip (he was about four years older than me) and I would try to draw my favorite one or two cells. Later, all three of my kids enjoyed drawing their favorite comic characters. It will be fun to have this book for my grandchildren - who all love the Bad Kitty books (as we all have kitties at our houses, too, even bad ones.)I remember how much fun it was and it was a treat versus a lesson, so I really like that this book takes it a step further and gives encouragement to children to try to draw on their own.

By Teresa Robeson I've always been interested in comic books and graphic novels, and can't help but think that if I only had this awesome Bad Kitty book as a kid, I would be a famous comic book artist today! Okay, maybe I wouldn't be famous, but I would have been less afraid of trying it on my own. I also wish Nick Bruel had published this book when my kids were little (instead of being 17 and 19 year olds); they would have loved this as much as I do. This book is both fun and functional; can't say that about too many books!

But, once in a blue moon, there is book that we borrow from the library that is so impressive that I buy it to always have around and to support the author. Bad Kitty Makes Comics is just such a book. Not only is the book humorous, the author skillfully shows the reader how to make comics in such a simple yet compelling way, that when I was done reading the book with my kids, I wanted to make some comics too! My son took a Comic Book Design Camp over the summer at our local community center and he said he learned more from this book than from the week long, half-day camp.

What would you see if you saw our world as God sees it? The New Testament book of Revelation was meant to be one of the most potent and practical in the Bible. But popular interpretations strive to identify specific people and events which simply are not there. When Revelation’s images are recognized as familiar ideas drawn largely from the Old Testament, the book can change the way we live by changing the way we see the world. Revelation was the last message of Jesus Christ. He did not intend to give us a puzzle no one can solve. He designed Revelation as a tapestry of pictures interpreting the spiritual conflict of his expanding kingdom. From God’s perspective, that conflict defines our age. In that sense, Revelation defines us.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "[P]ersevere though terrible tribulation until Christ returns to bring new age to ... By B. Smith Tapestries have been a way to get the big picture fast – and Tapestry: The Book of Revelation adeptly offers an overview of the marvelous and mysterious book of Revelation. But it is no simple synopsis. It is a well-written, pastoral application of seemingly incompressible visions. Dr. Parkinson’s book is as pithy as a coach’s comments to a sports team taking on a powerful opposing team – and as gentle as a friend urging another to take the next step on an unknown path.Tapestry is “a redressed series of sermons” he preached in the fall of 2005 – sermons, I heard. What I heard then was both challenging and comforting, given the times through which we were living, post 9/11. How much more valuable are they now, ten years later!Dr. Parkinson wants us to develop a faith for the real world – “But real-world faith requires that we first see the world.” (Tapestry, page 5) That was the reason God revealed His view of the world to John, who used “word pictures [to] describe characteristics of the entire age of the gospel expansion that culminates in the return of Christ and his establishment of Paradise.”The picture may have made more sense to a first century saint than a twenty-first century one – but the whole message is quite simple."[P]ersevere though terrible tribulation until Christ returns to bring new age to replace the one we are in. That’s it. That’s the message of Revelation, and it’s all in the first three chapters. The rest of the book burns this message into our souls." (page 9)He writes that reading Revelation is like walking blindfolded beside John down a long corridor as describes to us a series of paintings – or tapestries, like the Bayeux Tapestry – a handbook, if you will of the Norman Conquest. Dr. Parkinson doesn’t attach what John saw to a timeline, whether he was on Patmos, or transported into the Throne Room. God showed John the Church, and the tribulation as the gospel expands, until the Lord returns. (p. 16)As we must keep an open Bible when pastors preach, keep your Bible open when you plow through these nine chapters – and be willing to dig! Commentaries may be useful – but Dr. Parkinson’s approach is reading the book of Revelation for we are at war, even if the days seem tranquil.Christ told his people to be ready for his return – for our well-being in hard times. (Matthew 24:42-44)Turn that around and you have the message of Revelation: until Christ comes back, this is what our world will look like. So stay faithful until he returns."And return he will. The horsemen will trample, the false prophet will preach lies, the beast will roar and the prostitute will seduce until all seems lost. Then, out of nowhere, a bugle will sound the charge." (p.99)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The end times. By Amazon Customer Masterfully done! A view of the end times in a very logical sense. Not so much about trying to establish a time line but realistically a look at the Christian faith and God's requirement that we stay faithful and endure until his return. A very refreshing and logical read.

Theirs imagination and that world of theirs, is just marvelous.Anyway, what I was saying words is not my strong point. So, I'm not going to do justice to this story enough with my review. And if you had read already any of Lilas books, I don't think I need to say much. You already know how captivating and fun and adventurous her stories is. You already know this story, like the previous is must read. And if you not had pleasure to be living Hawks journey, you need to jump into this ride. Because you're missing so much. So, this No Way Out have is intriguing and enchanting and exciting and...Well, I just could continue to sing prices. But you could be reading all of it, instead of me keeping you of the story with my bubbling. Our biker hero, Stoke is...I don't have words enough to describe him. He's badass, yeah. But also he's can be so sweet, caring and loving...At the beginning, Stoke tried to fight his feelings, because he burned previously and don't wanna to be on that path again. But that fight wasn't for long. Because no one could be stronger that this pull he had for Malinda. And the way Stoke was with her it was...Just...Yeah, I'm crushing on him. And then add the way he's with Malindas children and you hit the f****** golden mine. Damn, where those kind of men are hiding? I need one like Stoke. Actuality all Hawks man are extraordinary. They live hardcore biker life, but when they meet theirs 'the one', the woman is the luckiest lady in the whole universe. And our H, Malinda had not easiest life. With the ex husband as hers. And that snipped of her 21st birthday...It crashed my heart. When she's out of biker husband life, she thought no way ever she will had anything to do with bikers again. But then she meets Hawks and the Muffkaters. And they show that bikers can be the bast family you ever could have. They supporting and protecting her and her children. They make her smile and find out what truly friends means. But what really make her start to live again is Stoke. He mends her shattered and bleeding heart. Actually he heals not only Malindas heart but her children's, too. They finally knows what fatherly love is like. *Sighs* The man is just breathtaking. And if that don't makes you crush on Stoke, then you're made of stone. There's some s*** are hitting the fan. A gift *feel my sarcasm here* Malindas husband left. Which puts her and her children in danger. Stoks and the rest of the Hawks have to take care off it.There is some hints on whit some characters. Which I couldn't wait to see where Lila will take us with it.Oh, there shows up duplicate of Deanna. Mrs. Cliff. The woman is the s***. And the bigggest nightmare for our bikers. They run from her as theirs sexy feet carries them. Lol.The Muffkaters is as awesome as ever. They're such a big part of the story. And sometimes such a pain in the bikers a***s. I love them! Both. The posses and the bikers. And also there's...Mmm...Maybe I will stop here. Because you really do not need to waste your time here and just go and spend your time with another consuming Hawks biker.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I LOVE this series!!!!! By Mzlane Lila Rose has done it again!!! I'm telling you, this series just keeps getting better and better!!! From the very first page I was hooked and could not put it down till the very end.Malinda has just lost her husband. She should be upset but she's not bc ever since her husband joined the Hawks MC he changed. Their marriage changed and she found herself no longer in love with him. Now that he is gone she is determined to keep not only herself but her two teenage children as far away from that life as possible but is there more to the story than Malinda knows? Was being a member of the Hawks MC what changed Tank or is there more to the story? From the moment Declan Stoke lays eyes on his brothers widow he is hooked. He knows its wrong but there is just something about her. Its pretty clear early on that Malinda wants nothing to do with the Hawks from the start so they are forced to call in for backup.....Julian!! Gosh, I'm telling you, I love him!! He is such a character!!!When Stoke and the Hawks MC realize just what kind of man Malinda's late husband was will they be able to keep Malinda and her children safe? Will they finally show her what it means to have a family that will love and protect you above all else? Will Malinda open up her heart to love again?Along with Julian, there is some really awesome and amazing secondary characters in this series! Do you love Deanna and her wild mouth attitude? Wait till you meet Mrs. Cliff!!! Holy cow that woman was a freaking hoot!!! She will def give the Hawks MC a run for their money and have you laughing your butt off!!Gahhhh, I dont want to say anything else just go now and one click this whole series!!! It is absolutely amazing!!! I can't wait for more!!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Love me some Stoke!! By Tracy A. Dimatteo I just love the Hawks MC!! All of the main characters of each story along with the supporting characters are well developed and compliment one another.Malinda is the wife of Hawks MC member, Tank. On one night many years ago he effectively destroys the love between him and Malinda and becomes indifferent to his two children. Tank is not well liked in the MC, spending his time partying hard and using the club whores. But this story isn't really about Tank, it's about Malinda whom none of the MC members were aware of until the day of Tank's funeral. Deciding that she needed to be brought into their fold and protect her from whatever was behind Tank's death, they enlist Julian and the women.Declan Stoke, known just as Stoke to his brothers, is a great guy and we learned that in prior books in the series. After dating Helen who was Ivy's best friend and seeing her cheat on him, he swears off anything permanent until he sees Malinda. With the MC offering protection, Stoke is able to get past Malinda's walls and easily opens his heart to her and her children. What you get with the Hawk's MC is a deep sense of family and loyalty. While there is always trouble brewing, this is not your typical MC read. These books are filled with laughs, tears, and happy endings. If you haven't become part of the Hawk's family, I highly recommend that you read this extraordinary series!!

Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe

From Publishers Weekly Variously beloved, denounced and dismissed over its 150-plus year history, Stowe's classic 1852 novel has been nothing if not productive. As Gates and Robbins note, the novel was vastly important in shaping American ideas and attitudes about race, but it also influenced the ways people thought about relationships and sexuality, and it continues to spur debate about the meanings of slavery and domesticity. Those are just some of the reasons it's an oft-assigned text in colleges, a market this beautifully annotated, wide-format edition addresses nicely. Joining seven other titles in Norton's handsomely produced "Annotated" series, the book offers 32 pages of color illustrations (not seen by PW), 150 b&w period illustrations, and a two-column format that has Stowe's text at left, and the annotations at right. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist *Starred Review* Celebrated when it was published in 1852 and later vilified, Uncle Tom's Cabin unquestionably changed American history and has had an enduring impact on American literature. In this annotated version of the novel, college professors Gates and Robbins explore changes in perspective on race, sex, and literature since the publication of the novel and its subsequent critique in the 1950s by James Baldwin. Throughout the book are illustrations of Uncle Tom across the years, including posters, postcards, woodcuts, and advertisements, all reflecting changing images of Uncle Tom and black Americans. Gates and Robbins explore images of heroism and subservience, contrasting the unctuous sentimentality of the novel with the implicit sexual tension between Uncle Tom and Little Eva, and explore the reason the novel remains so strong in the public imagination. Both new readers and those familiar with the work will appreciate the scholarly insight into the culture and social conventions that directed Stowe's writing. She sought to rouse abolitionist sentiments and, in the process, rendered Uncle Tom as no threat to white men. The editors ultimately applaud the novel as an enduring part of the American literary canon. Vanessa BushCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Review This is one of those books that everybody has heard about but few people these days have actually read. It deserves to be read - not simply because it is the basis for symbols so deeply ingrained in American culture that we no longer realize their source, nor because it is one of the bestselling books of all time. This is a book that changed history. Harriet Beecher Stowe was appalled by slavery, and she took one of the few options open to nineteenth century women who wanted to affect public opinion: she wrote a novel, a huge, enthralling narrative that claimed the heart, soul, and politics of pre-Civil War Americans. It is unabashed propaganda and overtly moralistic, an attempt to make whites - North and South - see slaves as mothers, fathers, and people with (Christian) souls. In a time when women might see the majority of their children die, Harriet Beecher Stowe portrays beautiful Eliza fleeing slavery to protect her son. In a time when many whites claimed slavery had "good effects" on blacks, Uncle Tom's Cabin paints pictures of three plantations, each worse than the other, where even the best plantation leaves a slave at the mercy of fate or debt. By twentieth-century standards, her propaganda verges on melodrama, and it is clear that even while arguing for the abolition of slavery she did not rise above her own racism. Yet her questions remain penetrating even today: "Is man ever a creature to be trusted with wholly irresponsible power? --review by Erica Bauermeister

I decided I finally needed to read it and judge it for myself. And I have to say, that for all its shortcomings (and it does have them), it is really a remarkable book. The standout characteristics of this book are the narrative drive (it's a very exciting, hard to put down book), the vivid characters (I don't know what other reviewers were reading, but I found the characters extremely vivid and mostly believable - exceptions to follow), the sprawling cast, the several completely different worlds that were masterfully portrayed, and the strong female characters in the book. The portrayal of slavery and its effects on families and on individuals is gut-wrenching - when Uncle Tom has to leave his family, and when Eliza may lose little Harry, one feels utterly desolate. As for flaws, yes, Mrs. Stowe does sermonize a fair bit, and her sentences and pronouncements can be smug. Yes, if you're not a Christian, you may find all her Christian references a bit much. (But the majority of her readers claimed to be Christian, and it was her appeal to the spirit of Christ that was her most powerful tug at the emotions of her readers). Yes, she still had some stereotypical views of African-Americans (frankly, I think most people have stereotypical views of races other than their own, they just don't state them as clearly today). But in her time, she went far beyond the efforts of most of her contemporaries to both see and portray her African-American brothers and sisters are equal to her. The best way she did this was in her multi-dimensional portrayal of her Negro characters -- they are, in fact, more believable and more diverse than her white characters. Yes, at times her portrayal of Little Eva and Uncle Tom is overdone at times -- they are a little cardboard in places -- but both, Uncle Tom especially, are overall believable, and very inspiring. The rest of the Negro characters - George Harris, Eliza, Topsy, Cassie, Emmeline, Chloe, Jane and Sara, Mammy, Alphonse, Prue, and others, span the whole spectrum of humanity -- they are vivid and real. The comments of a previous reviewer that the book actually justifies slavery (because "it says it's no worse than capitalism") and that it shows that Christianity defends slavery are due to sloppy reading of the book. No one reading the book could possibly come to the conclusion that it does anything but condemn slavery in the strongest and most indubitable terms. This was the point of the book. The aside about capitalism was just that, an aside on the evils of capitalism. It did not and does not negate the attack on slavery. Secondly, another major point of the book is that TRUE Christianity does not and could not ever support slavery. Stowe points out the Biblical references used to claim that Christianity defended slavery merely to show how the Bible can be misused by those who wish to defend their own indefensible viewpoint. It's ridiculous to say that the book "shows that Christianity supported slavery". It shows that some misguided preachers abused certain Bible passages and ignored other ones to support their view of slavery. There is an overlay of the tired "Victorian women's novel" to this piece - that must be granted. For literary perfection, it will never take its place beside Tolstoy, Dickens and Austen. But it is a piece entirely of its own category. Nothing before or after it has been anything like it, and it IS a great, if flawed, novel. I highly recommend it. I give it 5 stars despite its flaws because it's utterly unique, and its greatness is in some ways is related to its flaws.

I'd expected a poorly written melodrama with (at best) a tepid commitment to abolition and a strong undercurrent of racism. I was wrong. As a novel, I consider it to be better than many of its rough contemporaries (including "A Tale of Two Cities," "Vanity Fair," and "Sartor Resartus"). As an attack on slavery, it is uncompromising, well informed, logically sophisticated, and morally unassailable. It's also exciting, educational, and often funny. The book has flaws, of course. The quality of the writing is variable, as it is in the works of many greater talents than Stowe. Herman Melville is one of my favorite writers, but I'd be hard-pressed to defend some of his sentences--or even some of his books--on purely literary grounds! There are indeed sentimental passages in "UTC." So what? There are plenty in Hawthorne, Dickens, Ruskin, and the Brontes, too...and lord knows our age has its own garish pieties. There are also a couple (only a couple!) of unfortunate remarks on the "childlike" character of slaves, but nothing so offensive as to render suspect Stowe's passionate belief that blacks are equal to whites in the eyes of God and must not be enslaved. (She also says that differences between blacks and whites do not result from a difference in innate ability, and argues that a white person raised to be a slave would show all the characteristics of one). By contrast, Plato wrote reams in defense of slavery and racialism, and yet people who point this out are considered spoilsports, if not philistines. The reviewer who claimed to have learned from Stowe that "slavery is no worse than capitalism" has totally misunderstood Stowe, who says that slavery is AS terrible as capitalism. To be precise, Stowe equates the horrors of wage slavery under Victorian Britain's capitalist system of production with those of chattel slavery in the American South. Her definition of capitalism agrees perfectly with that of Karl Marx, who was a pro-abolitionist correspondent for the New York Daily Tribune (and was familiar enough with Stowe to have written a piece on her). Marx said that true capitalism is defined by "the annihilation of self-earned private property; in other words, the expropriation of the labourer." Marx did not consider America a capitalist state, because American workers had at least theoretical upward mobility and could acquire property. This was not at all true of the British working class when "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was written, as Stowe well knew. And there was nothing idiosyncratic about her opinion; contemporaneous books such as "The White Slaves of England" made the same connection between American chattel slavery and British wage slavery. The cruelty of both systems is what led Stowe to claim in an essay that the Civil War was not merely a war against slavery, but "a war for the rights of the working class of society as against the usurpation of privileged aristocracies."As for the claim that Stowe says Christianity justifies slavery, this is either willful misreading or wishful thinking...she says the opposite so many times, and at such length, that to remove every expression of it would probably shorten the book by half (to the delight, apparently, of most of our nation's English students). Not sure who to believe? If you're interested enough in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" to have slogged through this meandering review, why not read it and see for yourself what Stowe does, and doesn't, say?

It is much better than I expected it would be! Easy to read, well-written, and eye-opening. I noticed another reviewer said the download version was hard to read, but I did not find that to be a problem at all. One nice thing about the Kindle is the ability to download so many classics for free. I doubt I would go to the library and check out Uncle Tom's Cabin, but I would and did read it as a free Kindle download. I am glad that I did!
