Miller In looking back, more of my childhood memories of the first "Star Wars" memory come from the comic book adaptation rather than the movie itself. I was only three years old the month that the movie was released, and, in pre-VCR households in the late '70s and early '80s, if I wanted to experience actual "Star Wars" on a daily basis, reading the comic book was the closest that I could ever get to the real thing. It didn't help that I only had a compilation version of the second half of the movie -- issues #4 through #6 of the adaptation. For years, I knew the last 45 minutes of "Star Wars" much better than I did the beginning. So I nearly jumped out of my seat when I saw that there was a hardback edition of the complete comic-book run, all 6 issues in a single keeper volume. Now, the new book isn't *quite* the way that the comics were in 1977 -- the book has been "completely remastered and newly colored" and, unless I am seriously misremembering from 35-ish years ago, some of the wording has been changed (I dimly recall hearing that Stormtrooper TK-421 was originally called THX-1138 in the original comic; he's "TX-421" here, splitting the difference). The Death Star explosion seems taken from the Special Edition, not the original film.Otherwise, the work really stands the test of time. Howard Chaykin's artwork is largely faithful to the original (Chewbacca is a bit more feral and vicious-looking here), and Roy Thomas' script remains jaw-droppingly powerful, particularly as he narrates he attack on the Death Star in issue #6 ("Biggs' X-fighter bursts into a billion glowing splinters that rain down upon the bottom of the night-dark trench! What was it Luke said to Biggs, a short eternity ago? `You'll always be the best friend I've got.' ") Ini ts way, this adaptation really is as powerful as the original movie. There's nary a wasted panel nor dialogue balloon here.Note that this was based on the earliest, pre-May 1977, scripts and cuts of the film. Deleted scenes (minus 20 minutes of Shelagh Fraser pouring out blue milk) are all here -- Luke and Biggs meeting on Tatooine, un-hamstrung by Garrick Hagon's woeful attempt at an American accent; Jabba the Hutt is still diminutive actor Declan Mulholland, drawn with an ill-fitting rubber mask; the X-wing fighters are Blue Group, not Red; and, of course, the only way it was ever meant to be, and the way that it should still be today -- Han shoots Greedo first.

It covers the events of A New Hope in addition to some scenes not in the movies. Fans will enjoy seeing segments only seen in deleted scenes or the radio dramatization. There are also small differences and inconsistencies with films that I enjoyed picking out. The remastered colors give the classic style a more modern look. I vastly prefer the new remastered coloring to the old, original coloring. You can do a Google image search to decide for yourself. I would guess that most people will prefer the updated coloring, especially if their eyes are used to modern comics.

Swint "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..."In 1975, a meeting was held between a representative of a film company in the process of making a science fiction movie and the producers of comics from a major publisher. The first meeting was followed by a second meeting in which the principal negotiators involved agreed to create a new comic book series based on the upcoming film. These negotiators, Charles Lippincott, Media Supervisor for Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox Studios, Stan Lee, Publisher for Marvel Comics, and Roy Thomas, a writer and editor for Marvel Comics, all hoped the comic would be a success and help promote the new film that would premiere in May of 1977. The movie was called "Star Wars.""Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope" is a special hardcover book reprinting the original 6 issues of the Marvel Comic version of the now classic 1977 film, adapted by writer Roy Thomas and penciller Howard Chaykin. Because of the surprising, unprecedented success of the movie, written and directed by George Lucas, these particular comics shared in that popularity. Thus, they have been reprinted many times in different formats. This compilation is different from past collections because the comics have been "remastered and newly colored by SotoColor." From a certain point of view, Marvel Comics has created the first of its own version of the controversial "Special Editions" of the original film trilogy, to appeal to comic readers of "the modern age." Considering the enduring appeal of the "Star Wars" Saga has lasted through many incarnations, past, present and future, this long-time fan questions the need to, at the least, promote this volume as an attempt to reach a new audience, while a more cynical critic could see this book as more of an opportunity to make money off a cherished cultural icon. Nevertheless, this lover of "Star Wars" approached this publication primarily from an artistic perspective, enticed by the possibility of seeing this comic work rendered with the color and printing techniques of the 21st century. For the most part, this recolored re-imagining of this decades old comic adaptation is a rewarding reading experience. For example, the revised version of the coloring of the cover of "Star Wars" #1, illustrated by Howard Chaykin and Tom Palmer, is a vast improvement over the original. Gone is the green hued (!) helmet of the Dark Lord of the Sith and the hair buns of Princess Leia are no longer rendered in red. The tones and shades showcased on the cover to the "Star Wars" comic's premiere issue demonstrates the advances in color reproduction featured in the entirety of this special volume. The collected work as a whole has a more vibrant quality than could be achieved during the time these comics were first published. Still, this old comic fan does think some of the charm of the original comics has been sacrificed to bring this wellknown tale into the so-called "modern age."The fun of this first recorded "adventure of Luke Skywalker" remains but so do some of the shortcomings of the original artwork. Specifically, the comic adaptation's original art team. While Mr. Chaykin provided full pencil and ink illustrations to the first issue of "Star Wars," inker Steve Leialoha would become inker on the succeeding issues #2-5, and Mr. Chaykin's pencils would be embellished by Rick Hoberg and Bill Wray for issue #6, the final chapter of the movie adaptation. This is not a negative critique of the artwork created by the team of illustrators. But this artistic inconsistency in the first 6 "Star Wars" comics was a regrettable trend in some Marvel Comics of this era, a comic production flaw that, in this reviewer's opinion, undermined a sustained enjoyment of their comics from issue to issue. The reader felt a degree of uncertainty over what the comic they were buying would look like from one comic to the next. The "Star Wars" comic was lessened as a fun reading experience due to this lack of artistic stability. From a writing standpoint, Roy Thomas translated the grand sense of adventure of the movie well to the comic page. The film's partial roots in the movie serials from Hollywood of the 1930's was recreated in the comic's 6 part retelling of the film's story. The reader is also rewarded with scenes featured in the comic that were edited out of the final film. Of special note is a look at Luke's life on Tatooine, and his friendship with Biggs Darklighter. Mr. Thomas and Mr. Chaykin's comic rendition of this character was probably the first time fans of the movie saw the dashing figure of Luke's bestfriend before the publication of The Star Wars Storybook, released in 1978, which reproduced photos of Luke and Biggs together on Tatooine, taken from unused film from the movie. This hardcover book also includes a bonus section of artwork that includes reproductions of the original art created for some of the early "Star Wars" comic covers as well as reprints to some of the covers to other past collected editions of the "Star Wars" movie adaptation. Plus as an added treat, selected covers to the "Star Wars UK Weekly" reprint magazine Marvel published in Great Britain are featured, artwork rarely seen outside that island nation. This collection features a lush cover painting by Adi Granov, with yet another recolored reproduction of the premiere issue cover on the back by Edgar Delgado. In conclusion, for fans of the comic book version of the first "Star Wars" Saga, both young and old, this unique reprint edition provides another chance to enjoy this beloved tale once again in a whole new way.May the Force be with you, always!

Sterry I was not tempted to write a review of Doctor Criminale until I read one dated 1992 in the Independent newspaper (UK) that thoroughly ripped it up and down shortly after the book was published. Without using the word cliche (or perhaps he did) the reviewer, whose name I will not drop (sic) here, plainly wished to let us know that the book was a series of them, a dull unnatractive work that insulted us all. Then I am insulted and gladly so. I read this around the same time as I read Kasuo Ishiguro's novel 'The Unconsoled'. The dreamlike chases and continual lack of resolution are similar in both works. I was also a fan of David Lodge and the unmerciful pillorying of acadamia. This book, along with those by Lodge and Ishiguro have made many trans-oceanic ordeals not a pleasure but tolerable. If you like language, frustration and mystery I say take this book with you on your next flight.

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Best academic comic novel By Ben the Pedant Along with To the Hermitage, Bradbury's last ever novel, Doctor Criminale is a quintessential scholarly comedy that manages to engage literary themes from Borges to Derrida and back again without breaking a sweat or, worse still, appearing pretentious. In short, a thinking person's David Lodge and definitely worth (if the publisher should happen to read this) a reprint.

By Dayriane I love this book and wish it had been around when I was looking for information years ago!I really appreciate how Cassandra Larsen makes it very clear up front what Wicca is and is not, including the fact that doing a spell on someone else without their permission is not what the Wiccan philosophy is all about. The practice exercises are easy to comprehend and Cassandra gives direction on how to take these lessons to the next level so the practitioner can continue to grow. The explanations of the spells and celebrations are simple, yet very beautiful, and she makes it all understandable to even the most uninformed beginner. The best part of all, Cassandra points out the most important part of any magick isn't all the paraphernalia, words or potions. "The most important part of magick is YOU!"

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An engaging introduction By Mike Robbins Do you fancy being a witch? If so, this book will be very helpful. Cassandra Larsen’s Wicca: A Beginner's Guide to Witchcraft, Spells, Rituals, and Magick is, she says, the book she needed when she first started to practice. “When I first began my journey into this beautiful, soul-fulfilling religion, I remember how confusing and difficult it was. Most of the books I read on Wicca and Witchcraft required expensive tools and lengthy, complex rituals that were difficult to understand or follow.”Larsen begins by busting a few myths. Wiccans are not satanists, for a start. Rather, they believe in a God and Goddess that “reside in all of nature ... They are in the warmth of the sun’s rays, the exhilaration of the blowing wind, the gentle mist of rain on our skin, the steady earth beneath our feet. They are present all around us all the time and we constantly strive to deepen our relationship with Them.”I can almost hear Richard Dawkins howling. But in fact the way Larsen explains Wiccan belief makes it sound pretty mainstream. The idea of deities residing in nature has been around for a long time, as has the sanctity of the natural world; as a development volunteer in the Himalayas many years ago, I can remember people picking up branches and plants and taking them to higher altitudes on the grounds that this was helping nature, and smoking was frowned upon as the wanton destruction of a plant. Larsen also points out that if you have ever lit a candle and said a prayer for someone, you have cast a spell. It helps that her explanation of Wiccan belief, though very brief, is clear and courteous; she is not seeking to convert, simply to explain. The remainder of the book is dedicated to aspects of Wiccan practice; how to cast spells, how to create a charm, herb lore, and the significance of different festivals throughout the year. The latter are rooted in tradition and are not modern Wiccan inventions, although they would not normally be observed in most countries now. For someone just embarking on Wiccan practice, it is all clear, concise and helpful. In fact this book is of value for two types of reader: the newcomer to Wicca; and readers like me who would not adopt the faith, but would like to know a little about it. If there is a weakness, it is the fact that Larsen does not explain the origins of Wicca, which are within living memory (although said to be based on much older beliefs). Neither does she quote any authority for the information she conveys. However, the latter would be difficult, as Wicca has no central doctrinal body. In any case, this short book is not meant to be a comprehensive survey of Wicca – and Larsen does include a bibliography at the end.I am a rationalist and would not practice Wicca, but I’m also an agnostic and I don’t need to approve or disapprove of other people’s belief systems – and I suspect Larsen doesn’t either. In fact I found this book straightforward and informative. I also found myself thinking that, while Wiccan ritual may seem odd to some, it is scarcely more so than that of more formal religions that just happen to be more familiar. If you would like to learn more about Wicca, this short but engaging book would be a good place to start.(The author kindly supplied an ebook for review purposes.)

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Does exactly what is says on the cover By Emma Jaye This is a practical, non-fiction, concise introduction to the Wiccan religion and practices. It starts by assuring the reader that witches are not evil, but are attuned to the natural world, then goes through a step by step guide on how to be a practising witch, from meditation techniques to specific spells and Wiccan rituals and celebrations. The meditation techniques are fairly standard, until you are advised to channel and use your own energy and that of other natural objects. Ms Larsen gives instructions on how to create charms and amulets using your energy, how to create your own book of shadows, perform spells and rituals, use cauldrons, wands and yes, even broomsticks. I found it all fascinating particularly the attributes of various plants, stones, colours, phases of the moon and even days of the week for successful spell casting.

The copy provided to Vine reviewers originally was a promo copy that was not complete. I've since purchased the complete version of the book and it makes a world of difference. The promise that was in the promo was fulfilled in the final book. It's a cute way to teach children art concepts while drawing fun comics.Learning to draw by drawing comics comes naturally in my family. When I was a little girl, my older brother and I would try to draw the Peanuts characters from the Sunday comics. Each week, he would try to draw the whole strip (he was about four years older than me) and I would try to draw my favorite one or two cells. Later, all three of my kids enjoyed drawing their favorite comic characters. It will be fun to have this book for my grandchildren - who all love the Bad Kitty books (as we all have kitties at our houses, too, even bad ones.)I remember how much fun it was and it was a treat versus a lesson, so I really like that this book takes it a step further and gives encouragement to children to try to draw on their own.

By Teresa Robeson I've always been interested in comic books and graphic novels, and can't help but think that if I only had this awesome Bad Kitty book as a kid, I would be a famous comic book artist today! Okay, maybe I wouldn't be famous, but I would have been less afraid of trying it on my own. I also wish Nick Bruel had published this book when my kids were little (instead of being 17 and 19 year olds); they would have loved this as much as I do. This book is both fun and functional; can't say that about too many books!

But, once in a blue moon, there is book that we borrow from the library that is so impressive that I buy it to always have around and to support the author. Bad Kitty Makes Comics is just such a book. Not only is the book humorous, the author skillfully shows the reader how to make comics in such a simple yet compelling way, that when I was done reading the book with my kids, I wanted to make some comics too! My son took a Comic Book Design Camp over the summer at our local community center and he said he learned more from this book than from the week long, half-day camp.

What would you see if you saw our world as God sees it? The New Testament book of Revelation was meant to be one of the most potent and practical in the Bible. But popular interpretations strive to identify specific people and events which simply are not there. When Revelation’s images are recognized as familiar ideas drawn largely from the Old Testament, the book can change the way we live by changing the way we see the world. Revelation was the last message of Jesus Christ. He did not intend to give us a puzzle no one can solve. He designed Revelation as a tapestry of pictures interpreting the spiritual conflict of his expanding kingdom. From God’s perspective, that conflict defines our age. In that sense, Revelation defines us.

Smith Tapestries have been a way to get the big picture fast – and Tapestry: The Book of Revelation adeptly offers an overview of the marvelous and mysterious book of Revelation. But it is no simple synopsis. It is a well-written, pastoral application of seemingly incompressible visions. Dr. Parkinson’s book is as pithy as a coach’s comments to a sports team taking on a powerful opposing team – and as gentle as a friend urging another to take the next step on an unknown path.Tapestry is “a redressed series of sermons” he preached in the fall of 2005 – sermons, I heard. What I heard then was both challenging and comforting, given the times through which we were living, post 9/11. How much more valuable are they now, ten years later!Dr. Parkinson wants us to develop a faith for the real world – “But real-world faith requires that we first see the world.” (Tapestry, page 5) That was the reason God revealed His view of the world to John, who used “word pictures [to] describe characteristics of the entire age of the gospel expansion that culminates in the return of Christ and his establishment of Paradise.”The picture may have made more sense to a first century saint than a twenty-first century one – but the whole message is quite simple."[P]ersevere though terrible tribulation until Christ returns to bring new age to replace the one we are in. That’s it. That’s the message of Revelation, and it’s all in the first three chapters. The rest of the book burns this message into our souls." (page 9)He writes that reading Revelation is like walking blindfolded beside John down a long corridor as describes to us a series of paintings – or tapestries, like the Bayeux Tapestry – a handbook, if you will of the Norman Conquest. Dr. Parkinson doesn’t attach what John saw to a timeline, whether he was on Patmos, or transported into the Throne Room. God showed John the Church, and the tribulation as the gospel expands, until the Lord returns. (p. 16)As we must keep an open Bible when pastors preach, keep your Bible open when you plow through these nine chapters – and be willing to dig! Commentaries may be useful – but Dr. Parkinson’s approach is reading the book of Revelation for we are at war, even if the days seem tranquil.Christ told his people to be ready for his return – for our well-being in hard times. (Matthew 24:42-44)Turn that around and you have the message of Revelation: until Christ comes back, this is what our world will look like. So stay faithful until he returns."And return he will. The horsemen will trample, the false prophet will preach lies, the beast will roar and the prostitute will seduce until all seems lost. Then, out of nowhere, a bugle will sound the charge." (p.99)

Not so much about trying to establish a time line but realistically a look at the Christian faith and God's requirement that we stay faithful and endure until his return. A very refreshing and logical read.

Theirs imagination and that world of theirs, is just marvelous.Anyway, what I was saying words is not my strong point. So, I'm not going to do justice to this story enough with my review. And if you had read already any of Lilas books, I don't think I need to say much. You already know how captivating and fun and adventurous her stories is. You already know this story, like the previous is must read. And if you not had pleasure to be living Hawks journey, you need to jump into this ride. Because you're missing so much. So, this No Way Out have is intriguing and enchanting and exciting and...Well, I just could continue to sing prices. But you could be reading all of it, instead of me keeping you of the story with my bubbling. Our biker hero, Stoke is...I don't have words enough to describe him. He's badass, yeah. But also he's can be so sweet, caring and loving...At the beginning, Stoke tried to fight his feelings, because he burned previously and don't wanna to be on that path again. But that fight wasn't for long. Because no one could be stronger that this pull he had for Malinda. And the way Stoke was with her it was...Just...Yeah, I'm crushing on him. And then add the way he's with Malindas children and you hit the f****** golden mine. Damn, where those kind of men are hiding? I need one like Stoke. Actuality all Hawks man are extraordinary. They live hardcore biker life, but when they meet theirs 'the one', the woman is the luckiest lady in the whole universe. And our H, Malinda had not easiest life. With the ex husband as hers. And that snipped of her 21st birthday...It crashed my heart. When she's out of biker husband life, she thought no way ever she will had anything to do with bikers again. But then she meets Hawks and the Muffkaters. And they show that bikers can be the bast family you ever could have. They supporting and protecting her and her children. They make her smile and find out what truly friends means. But what really make her start to live again is Stoke. He mends her shattered and bleeding heart. Actually he heals not only Malindas heart but her children's, too. They finally knows what fatherly love is like. *Sighs* The man is just breathtaking. And if that don't makes you crush on Stoke, then you're made of stone. There's some s*** are hitting the fan. A gift *feel my sarcasm here* Malindas husband left. Which puts her and her children in danger. Stoks and the rest of the Hawks have to take care off it.There is some hints on whit some characters. Which I couldn't wait to see where Lila will take us with it.Oh, there shows up duplicate of Deanna. Mrs. Cliff. The woman is the s***. And the bigggest nightmare for our bikers. They run from her as theirs sexy feet carries them. Lol.The Muffkaters is as awesome as ever. They're such a big part of the story. And sometimes such a pain in the bikers a***s. I love them! Both. The posses and the bikers. And also there's...Mmm...Maybe I will stop here. Because you really do not need to waste your time here and just go and spend your time with another consuming Hawks biker.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I LOVE this series!!!!! By Mzlane Lila Rose has done it again!!! I'm telling you, this series just keeps getting better and better!!! From the very first page I was hooked and could not put it down till the very end.Malinda has just lost her husband. She should be upset but she's not bc ever since her husband joined the Hawks MC he changed. Their marriage changed and she found herself no longer in love with him. Now that he is gone she is determined to keep not only herself but her two teenage children as far away from that life as possible but is there more to the story than Malinda knows? Was being a member of the Hawks MC what changed Tank or is there more to the story? From the moment Declan Stoke lays eyes on his brothers widow he is hooked. He knows its wrong but there is just something about her. Its pretty clear early on that Malinda wants nothing to do with the Hawks from the start so they are forced to call in for backup.....Julian!! Gosh, I'm telling you, I love him!! He is such a character!!!When Stoke and the Hawks MC realize just what kind of man Malinda's late husband was will they be able to keep Malinda and her children safe? Will they finally show her what it means to have a family that will love and protect you above all else? Will Malinda open up her heart to love again?Along with Julian, there is some really awesome and amazing secondary characters in this series! Do you love Deanna and her wild mouth attitude? Wait till you meet Mrs. Cliff!!! Holy cow that woman was a freaking hoot!!! She will def give the Hawks MC a run for their money and have you laughing your butt off!!Gahhhh, I dont want to say anything else just go now and one click this whole series!!! It is absolutely amazing!!! I can't wait for more!!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Love me some Stoke!! By Tracy A. Dimatteo I just love the Hawks MC!! All of the main characters of each story along with the supporting characters are well developed and compliment one another.Malinda is the wife of Hawks MC member, Tank. On one night many years ago he effectively destroys the love between him and Malinda and becomes indifferent to his two children. Tank is not well liked in the MC, spending his time partying hard and using the club whores. But this story isn't really about Tank, it's about Malinda whom none of the MC members were aware of until the day of Tank's funeral. Deciding that she needed to be brought into their fold and protect her from whatever was behind Tank's death, they enlist Julian and the women.Declan Stoke, known just as Stoke to his brothers, is a great guy and we learned that in prior books in the series. After dating Helen who was Ivy's best friend and seeing her cheat on him, he swears off anything permanent until he sees Malinda. With the MC offering protection, Stoke is able to get past Malinda's walls and easily opens his heart to her and her children. What you get with the Hawk's MC is a deep sense of family and loyalty. While there is always trouble brewing, this is not your typical MC read. These books are filled with laughs, tears, and happy endings. If you haven't become part of the Hawk's family, I highly recommend that you read this extraordinary series!!
