The Battle for WondLa (The Search for WondLa), by Tony DiTerlizzi

From School Library Journal Gr 5–9—In the third and final installment of the "WondLa" trilogy (after A Hero for WondLa), Eva Nine is still struggling to stop the war that could destroy Orbona. The battle between the humans and aliens has forced Eva to abandon her friends and go into hiding for fear of leading Loroc, the evil sibling-eating alien, to those she loves. But when Cadmus Pryde, the leader of the humans, attacks the city of Solas, Eva's courage is tested and the fate of Orbana hangs in the balance. Teri Hatcher skillfully crafts a strong vocal presence for Eva and gives life to Eva's friends and foes. Though the narration speed seems slow at times, the pacing helps establish the detailed and multi-dimensional world. The audiobook can certainly stand alone as a lovely example of oral storytelling, but it is regrettable that listeners miss DiTerlizzi's beautiful illustrations. Those who are interested, however, can find the original pictures, several drawings, character bios, and some really cool augmented reality games on WondLa.com. Recommended for fans of the series, Dungeons and Dragons enthusiasts, and epic-friendship fantasy lovers.—Chani Craig, Converse Middle School, Palmer, MA

From Booklist In this conclusion to DiTerlizzi’s much-loved series, Eva Nine is on the run, branded a traitor and a spy. The humans and aliens who both populate the magnificently lush planet, home to upside-down birds and immense water bears, are now at odds, and Eva is the only one with the skills to reason with each species. Like Middle Earth and Oz, Orbona is packed with creatures and places with proper names in unfamiliar languages, and although there are a few stabs at exposition, readers will more fully appreciate the epic sweep of this complicated story if they read the books in order. Of particular interest is Eva’s development into a young woman of unwavering compassion and courage, even in the face of betrayal, loss, and injury. DiTerlizzi’s beautiful illustrations are worth the price of admission, as usual, and they do much to help the reader distinguish among the plethora of strange creatures. WondLa fans will be sad to see it all end, and, even with some uneven pacing, they’ll be satisfied with the result. Grades 5-8. --Paula Willey

Review *"The three books that constitute Tony DiTerlizzi's futuristic classic chart an unforgettable journey, masterfully told...The end to Eva's search for her WondLa is deeply touching. Victory has never looked this good." (Shelf Awareness, starred review)"Like Middle Earth and Oz, Orbona is packed with creatures and places with proper names in unfamiliar languages...DiTerlizzi’s beautiful illustrations are worth the price of admission." It was a well done conclusion to this series, although it was also my least favorite book in this series. It just lacked the wonder and adventure of the first two books and was more about politics and war.Eva Nine is in hiding with Haley in the forest. She is worried about luring the evil Lorac to her companions and fearful of anyone else dying because of her actions. When Haley finally convinces her that hiding is cowardly, Eva ventures back into the fray. She ends up seeking out help from the only place she can and then speaking to the Queen herself.Eva has changed a lot over the series. This book starts with her hiding from her obligations out of fear for those around her. However she finally steps up to accept her responsibility and ends up becoming an admirable heroine. This book is Eva’s big delve into politics, she is dealing with a number of different parties who are all lying (or at least telling their own version) of the truth. I honestly felt a bit sad that she had to go from the excited and adventurous girl in the first book to this scared girl weighed down by all these responsibilities...but I guess it’s all part of growing up.I was a little disappointed that Rovee wasn’t in the story more, he is in there some towards the end but is absent for the beginning. I missed a lot of Eva’s friends in the beginning of the book. This book is a bit slower in pace than the previous books as well. The story wraps up nicely. DiTerlizzi includes an Epilogue and then a few sections that occur 100, 200, and 300 years later. These sections were kind of interesting and let us see what Eva Nine’s world developed into. However, aside from being somewhat amusing they didn’t add a lot to the story.I continue to enjoy the beautiful illustrations throughout and loved how the story had both humor and heart.Overall this was a well done conclusion to this series. I enjoyed the beautiful illustration and all the unique characters. The story was slower in this book than in the previous two. Eva has grown up and there wasn’t as much wonder and adventure in this book, she is dealing more with deceit and politics. Everything ties up nicely and overall I was very pleased with this series. I would recommend to middle grade and older readers who love reading about adventure and science fiction. What really sets this book apart is the beautiful illustrations and the way the book is laid out.

When The Search for WondLa first appeared, my entire family was instantly hooked. Delightful, vibrant characters, a stunningly vivid world, and wholly original plot make DiTerlizzi's trilogy a must-read for any lover of fantasy. -actually, I take that back. I believe that anyone- despite age or genre preferences- would fall in love with the WondLa books. The characters are simply so REAL. They have wonderful flaws as well as wonderful strengths. They love. They are betrayed. They fight, they run; they win, they lose. Ultimately, friendship, loyalty and good emerge triumphant, and although I hated having to say goodbye to this universe, I was satisfied. DiTerlizzi manages to wrap up all loose ends, yet leave enough open so that the story never truly ends. You are not left wondering what will happen to the beloved characters, but you find yourself *imagining* what will, which is a drastic difference. (plus Tony DiTerlizzi's illustrations- gorgeous. whimsical. perfect. I often flip through the books simply for the joy of looking at the pictures.)So, if you enjoyed the first books, if you enjoy a good fantasy romp, if you seek adventure, if you long for a tale of sweeping discovery, if you want to rediscover the joy of a good, satisfying fiction, (ultimately- if you breathe) -- read this book, read this entire trilogy.I promise that you will not be disappointed.

Mending Hearts (Living Plain Book 3), by June Belfie

About the Author My deepest roots are here in Pennsylvania, though I was born in New York State and lived in New Jersey and Connecticut for the first twenty years of my life. The beauty of Pennsylvania and the variation in the seasons and topography have gotten into my soul, and I hope to spend the rest of my life here. Married over forty years to a very special man who loves me just the way I am, I’m also the mother of five adult children and grandmother to eight amazing kids. We’ve just been blessed with the birth of our first great-great grandchild. Wow! That makes me ancient. (Why do I still feel like I’m thirty?) I believe in Jesus Christ and I pray for direction in my writing. Not all has been roses in my life. I had a divorce many years ago and know the pain of rejection. I've had illnesses, watched my children suffer, lost my parents, and known failure. Perhaps, for all these reasons, I feel a need to share through my writings. Perhaps a thought, a chapter, even a sentence might help a fellow human in some small way.

By Pamela Pavkov June Bryan Belfie has once again delivered a wonderful story, Mending Hearts continues her series Living Plain. She takes us back to follow a blended family resulting from two deaths.Abe and Anna Stoltzfus have joined their two families out of necessity. Neither one of them expect love to grow but we're OK with that. As you read this book you will witness how love can grow when you least expect it. With seven children blended together can this family form a bond and really become a family? Two of the older boys cause several difficulties but how will Abe handle it? Will Anna agree with his punishment for the boys or will cause a divide between them.In the mean time back in Pennsylvania Anna's sister Beth is still trying to figure love out. When she starts spending time with Shorty, a co-worker, does her boss Josiah show signs of jealousy? Beth is still wondering if Josiah is still in love with her. When Beth receives a letter from Sam, her sisters brother in law, stating his interest in coming to visit her how will Josiah deal with it. Does he once again display jealous feelings? Beth is confused as to what Josiah really feels. When Beth decides to go visit her sister she needs to find a replacement for her. When the pretty young Amish girl shows up and Josiah treats her with great interest how will Beth deal with it? Beth claims she has no feelings for Josiah anymore but her actions say otherwise. Will Josiah developed a special interest in Eve?Who will propose marriage to Beth? With the three men all interested in her, who will she choose? The choice Beth makes may surprise you.I recommend this book to all those who love the Amish genre. This story is filled with alot of twists.I did not receive a complimentary copy of this book. I have submitted my honest review based on the story. I have also rated this book with 5 stars.

Said what she thought , made some mistakes in her life but learned from them. Anna was dealt a lot of heart ache early in her life but God took care of her and healed her broken heart. All ends well for these sisters.I've always enjoyed June Belfies Amish stories and Living Plain didn't disappoint.

Each book is a great read and Book 3 did not disappoint me. I loved how the story ended for both sisters. Anna and Beth are both memorable characters and while reading about their lives, I wanted the best for each woman. It's a book that is hard to put down while reading it.

" Q: how many cops does it take to throw a man down the stairs? A: None. He fell " and "Q: What did the overweight ballet dancer perform? A: The dance of the sugar plump fairy". After she read these to me, I made her remove this book. These are not good jokes for kids.

Geography is essential to a child’s education. And basic to that study is a simple outline of countries and continents. In Draw Europe I have tried to give students an easy introduction to committing the map of Europe to memory. Through simple, step-by-step instructions, students learn to draw each country as it connects to its neighbors and, with a little practice, will be able to draw Europe as a whole.

Being A Better Friend to Those Experiencing Loss. Knapp draws on his own experience of losing both his first and second wife to cancer to provide insight into some of the unhelpful responses we often make, and presents a repertoire of ideas on how to be a genuine friend and helper to a grieving person. Various chapters in the book deal with different kinds of losses, including the trauma of losing a spouse or child, divorce, loss of pets, and other losses that we sometimes fail to recognize need to be grieved over if healing is to occur. A veteran teacher, Knapp supplements his chapters with practical lists of responses that may be helpful at different points in the grieving process. His book is a wonderful tool for preparing ourselves for the inevitable human experience of dealing with other's grief, or our own. A student of life and processes, David Knapp "leans into" the situation at hand. Whether raising four children, or blending a family with eight teenagers, running a small business or teaching fresh-faced college students, he knows how to communicate effectively. He does not write from theory, but from experience and study.

There are many books written for the griever, but few written for the friends of the griever. I think we can all relate to the feeling of wanting to be a help and a comfort when our loved ones hurt, but not knowing what to say or how to say it. This book clears that all up and does so in very practical ways. I especially love the chapter that gives a timeline for helping the person who is experiencing loss and I know I’ll be referring to it often. You should know that David is my Dad. Yes, that means I’m very proud of him! But it also means I can give you a peek behind the curtains to the man that he is. I have watched him walk through seasons of deep grief and have the courage to face all that it brings. Because he was so open to going through the process, he was able to learn the lessons and can share them with us in such a gracious manner.Get this book if you have a friend going through a loss of some sort! But even if you tuck it away on your bookshelf for a time, you’ll be so glad to have it when life happens to someone you love, as life has a way of doing.

Helping each other through these normal times increases our bonds to each other and fulfills a purpose for us being in each other’s lives". -David KnappDeath is the opposite of life. And for those who have experienced loss, grieving can feel dark, lonely, scary, confusing and/or almost unbearable. For those grieving, life almost seems suspended, but the reality is, life goes on regardless of our loss. As fellow humans looking on, we WANT to communicate, but words seem impotent and so often we simply don't know what to say, hence, the title of David Knapp's book: "I Didn't Know What To Say: Being A Better Friend to Those Who Experience Loss".The author speaks candidly about his firsthand experience with death and dying by sharing his personal heartache, struggles and lessons learned in the process. He discusses how fear and isolation often go together in the grieving process. The griever often feels fear while those around them often isolate them until they "get over it". He gives insights about the multi-layered nature of grief and helps readers understand how they can better fit into the process of helping others through those various layers. He discusses the subjects of avoidance and stuffing, hope and disappointment, sadness and sorrow, coming to grips with permanent separation, loss, and learning to live with a new identity.Though the author shares his story about grieving the loss of two wives after illness, I appreciate how he also incorporates other forms of death, dying, and loss. These may include grief over abandonment from an adoption, separation through abortion, the loss of children and friends through illness, a miscarriage, or even the loss of a pet, job or a dream. He also touches on the differences between genders, cultures and religions to help readers understand differing perspectives and worldviews about death and dying. In each chapter you'll find sections with practical helps such as, "Point to Ponder" and "What To Say" or "What Not To Say" to someone during the grieving process, along with other practical advice on overcoming barriers that affect healthy mourning. In the end, the author shares how his personal roots of faith helped ground and guide him through the inevitable reality of grief, permanence of loss and discovering a "new normal".No one can be completely prepared for loss and grief, but through the author's sharing of his very personal journey and lessons learned, readers can become more equipped to be a better friend to those who are grieving. This book is practical and helpful for caregivers, friends or family of those experiencing some form of grief or loss, and those in a position to lead or counsel others.(Note: I was provided an Advanced Reader Copy of this book for review purposes. I was not required to write a positive review, and these opinions are my own).

Stephen Lanning I don't know if it is proper to 'rate' a book on bereavement with 'stars', especially when it may deal with the loss of a spouse as the author has experienced. We've all been there before--trying to console a person on their loss. It makes it many times as hard the more familiar we are with the person experiencing the loss. We just feel clumsy. The thing that makes this book so helpful is that it applies to loss--of divorce, children and even pets--so thoroughly. I would call it a guide book in the way that it is so broad and thorough. The author does face grieving squarely. I know that I've been so uncomfortable seeing good friends suffer in the middle of a funeral home--or their living room--and just, selfishly, want to find any excuse to leave. But this work is different. It not only allows one to squarely face talking about another's loss, it gives you step-by-step 'tools' to actually minister to the person. (And yes, I've seen a person seemingly more broken up by the loss of a pet than with the loss of a person. This book helps here, too.)My own issue right now is how to give this book as gifts. But it is a sorely needed topic that begs to be covered EXACTLY akin to the way the author covers it. Sure, in 200+ pages, the experienced reader can possibly see how you may have handled a situation differently. But here, in one volume, is a book that should be in every home. It is said that the only two things we face for certain are death and taxes. This handles the former subject quite well as a very needed voice in an uncertain world.

What would happen if God drove a Harley-Davidson? Could a petty criminal who turns talcum powder into cocaine be mistaken for Jesus Christ? Could the Saviour escape a flood in a giant flying fish to become an apprentice lion tamer? Only Charlie Peace, a teller of incredible stories, knows. His magical tales about the Gospels, Jesus Christ, and a City of Gold fill the otherwise mundane lives of two children, Jack and Polly, with mystical dreams and visions. Charlie is their hero. Years later, Jack - now a criminal with a cult following - is haunted by the need to find truth in both the stories and the storyteller. He needs to believe, and only Charlie can set him straight. But where is Charlie? With the help of wildly eccentric characters such as the heiress Ottoline Ottolyne, the evangelical Matthew Tenn, and other members of the Church of the Millennium - where sex is a sacrament - Jack begins his search for reality. His quest takes him from rustic England to seedy Manhattan, on a whirlwind adventure where anything can happen - even a miracle - and does. Blasphemous, outrageous, and blackly funny, Charlie Peace is a scandalous fable about God, love, and the number of gallons of gas a Harley needs to get to heaven.

Charlie Peace, by Paul Pickering

From Publishers Weekly A bizarre, wildly surreal fantasy that lampoons Christianity and organized religion, this convoluted tale makes Salvador Dali's psychospiritual rantings look tame. Narrator Jack Peachey, an English burglar hailed by thousands as the true Jesus, turns talcum powder into cocaine and causes the clothes of women around him to dematerialize. Jack is a disciple of a religious cultist, a former Kansas farmboy who became a lion tamer in a circus with Christian revivalist themes and who assumed the name of the circus manager, Charlie Peace, after the latter's death in a fire on the island of Tobago. Peachey goes to seedy Manhattan to track down Peace and a miniature crystal talisman linked to the medieval Albigensian heresy. There Jack meets Ottoline Ottolyne, an heirless linked to the Church of the Millennium, a heretical cult which uses sex as a sacrament. Interrupting these shenanigans are anachronistic retellings of the Gospels narrated by Jack, now charged with murder and imprisoned on Rikers Island, N.Y. Pickering ( Blue Gate of Babylon ) overworks parody and sacrilegious gags to serve his theme that every true believer is a natural heretic. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Just who is this Jesus character, and why is everybody out to get him? Jack Peachey, a brilliant but troubled orphan recently released from prison, finds himself caught up in tricks such as turning talcum powder into cocaine and genuinely inexplicable events such as healing the sick and walking on water. Is he the latest incarnation of Christ or a pawn in a religious scam? Pickering skillfully interweaves three stories--those of Jack and Poppy, Charlie Peace and Molly Mooney, and Christ and his 13th apostle, Pax--to create a web of surprise and suspense, miracle and horror. Some may claim that Charlie Peace is as heretical to Christianity as The Satanic Verses is to Islam, but it may be closer to a more outrageous Last Temptation of Christ . Some fundamentalists and prudes will be offended. More daring readers will be fascinated and challenged by this lively and original work. Highly recommended.- Jim Dwyer, California State Univ. at ChicoCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews A mishmash of a tale that mixes the fantastic misadventures of a modern-day hero often mistaken for Christ with stories from the New Testament retold from an offbeat off-putting slant. English novelist and journalist Pickering (The Blue Gate of Babylon, 1989; Wild About Harry, 1985) assembles a meandering narrative that goes back and forth in time, now and then rehashing the same material. The Albigensians, medieval heretics who believed the earth was created by an evil god, are mentioned several times- -and certainly the world Pickering describes is nothing to cheer about. There is also an on-again/off-again quest for a City of Gold or its jeweled replica held by title character Charlie Peace, who has mythic dimensions and may be 2000 years old. Jack Peachy, the hero, was intrigued by Peace's stories as a child in Yorkshire and goes to New York with his sister Poppy in search of him and his City of Gold bauble. Feverish, dysfunctional New York is one of the targets of Pickering's satiric barbs, as is America's religious right. But nothing has much impact because the incidents--realistic or fantastic--seem to be thrown together arbitrarily, making the whole less than the sum of its parts. Whether Jack lives or dies or simply withdraws to a quiet corner becomes of no compelling interest since he, like the book, appears to be fashioned at whim. The Christ who surfaces in the stories here, sometimes on a motorcycle, isn't made out to be worth the effort of either worshipping or disavowing. The humor is largely jejune or spoiled by a sense of strain, and the sex, though graphic, lacks sensuality. A Pilgrim's Progress going nowhere (which may have been the author's intention). -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

But the novel as a whole is uneven. It interweaves stories by or about three different characters: Jack Peachey, the man mistaken for the second coming of Christ; Charlie Peace, the friend and surrogate father of Jack Peachey, who has spent his life searching for a legendary city of gold; and Pax, a disciple of Jesus Christ, who is constantly baffled by his Lord's unexplainable behavior. The stories about Pax and Jesus are imaginative and thought provoking (and sure to offend devout Christians). I would have liked to see an entire novel of these interesting characters. These were the stories that kept me reading. The stories about Charlie, and the central story of Jack were less compelling. Neither of these characters was fleshed out very well. This novel was ripe with interesting ideas, but none of them congealed into a discernable theme. The book kept me reading, but left me unsatisfied in the end.

Christ. And if the son of God were to return how we as,less than prefect humans would more than likely crucify his ass a second time.A great thought jerker!
