While speaking at a summit on the campus of Georgetown University, President Barack Obama mentioned a conversation he had with a young man who asked the question, "How did you get over being mad with your dad, because I've got a father that beat my mom, and has left the state. I've never seen him because he's trying to avoid eighty-three thousand dollars in child support payments. I want to love my dad, but I don't know how to do that." Many young men and women are faced with this painful quandary when dealing with an absentee father. Misfire: Recovering & Restoring an Estranged Relationship between Me & My Father When It Seemed Impossible addresses this question head on. Bennie C. Lee Jr.'s story details how an explosive relationship between his mother and father led to an estranged relationship between he and his father. For 14 years Bennie did not have much of a relationship with his father, and it seemed as if that was how the story was going to end; spending the rest of his life without his dad. To the contrary, they ended up sharing one of the greatest relationships a son could enjoy with his dad. In this book, Bennie shares six powerful, scripture-based steps on restoring an estranged relationship with one's father.

By Dicken Greene The bright, almost blinding, florescent light of our cramped kitchen shown in my wide four-year-old eyes. The yells of my father toward my mother and her lover ring in my ears still forty-two years later. The silhouette of my father, standing in our front door cursing us as my mother knelt to comfort her sobbing son, are seared into my memory. This is my story and that of many others. The power of Mr. Lee’s message in relating his life is to allow the many others like him, to safely relive the trauma caused by their absentee father, through the eyes of another who has successfully navigated to a place of peace. Peace not just for himself, not just for he and his family, but for himself, family, and for the greater good of us all.He does this in three parts: firstly by relating a powerful autobiography which poignantly illustrates the key issues, pitfalls, blind spots, misdirections that torment and entangle many people who have experienced an absentee father, and reveals how beneficial and healing it is to repair the relationship; secondly he reveals how this trauma can manifest itself in our personally destructive behavior and how reconnecting with one’s absentee father can have a profound healing influence for ourselves, family, and the community; and finally he correctly instructs those who are suffering to seek expert help. Like the blind leading the blind, we often do not realize how our own filters impact our perceptions then actions. His story captures our attention with revealing imagery that truthfully mirrors our own then shows us how he worked through it, how you can too, and who can help. It reminds me of the joke, “How many psychiatrists does it take to screw in a light bulb? One, but he has to want to.” Reading Misfire or giving it to a friend or sibling may encourage them to want to heal then will show them how. In short, Bennie Lee’s Misfire is right on target.

We are often taught that what goes on in the house stays in the house. Sadly, because of family secrets children grown in to adults who are pained by mystery, haunted by whys and tormented by their own renditions of what ever happened. This book beautifully exposed how much we need God in our times of despair, sorrow, confusion and hopelessness. He is the only one who can open doors no man can shut and shut doors no man can open!

I've often wondered if one of my children had sensory processing disorder or if he was just "sensitive." Sensory is a confusing topic, and there are a lot of terms thrown around, such as sensory integration, sensory integration, sensory seeking...I could never make sense of all of it - until this book!Chock full of information and put together amazingly well, this book describes the sensory systems in detail. The authors discuss what healthy sensory systems look like, and what problems with each sensory system looks like as well. You get the viewpoint of both a therapist and a parent/educator.Are you wondering if your child has a real problem or if he's just going through a phase? Chapter 9 gives you 3 signs to look for, red flag behaviors, and a handy checklist! My very favorite part of this book is the activities section! There are several sensory activities for every sensory system! These activities look amazing, and I know I'll be referencing this section a lot! Finally, the cheat sheets and index of behaviors are great. Have a child who always uses the "outside voice" or covers their ears when there is noise or dislikes being dirty? You can find the answers you're looking for quickly in the index. This is an invaluable resource for all parents and educators!

This book seriously explains the issues in such an organized way so it is easy to understand. I love that it is told from 2 perspectives... the therapist so I can read the technical way things work and the parent perspective so I feel like I am not alone! I highly recommend this book to parents who suspect a loved one may have sensory issues. I am also a teacher and I as I am reading this book I am making lots of connections with experiences I have had with students in the past. Very powerful book for teachers whether you have students with diagnosed sensory issues or not (because they are in your class even if you don't have a diagnosis.)

By Deetdewgirl This book is like the Sensory Bible! I LOVE how it explains Sensory Processing, gives TONS of great sensory activities, and the additional resources are insanely handy for everyday life! My son has SPD so I'm no newbie to understanding sensory theory, but I found myself learning even more and finding ways to communicate it to others in a way that makes sense to everyone! I thought I'd seen every sensory activity under the sun, but I was wrong! This book is a blessing to ALL kids, not just those with SPD!

The Wrath and the Dawn, by Renée Ahdieh

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—A reimagined tale based on One Thousand and One Nights and The Arabian Nights. In this version, the brave Shahrzad volunteers to marry the Caliph of Khorasan after her best friend is chosen as one of his virgin brides and is summarily murdered the next morning. She uses her storytelling skills, along with well-placed cliff-hangers, to keep herself alive while trying to discover a way to exact revenge on the Caliph. However, the longer she stays in the palace, the more she realizes there's more going on than just a murderous prince. While her feelings for the Caliph grow and change, the first love she left behind is busy plotting to overthrow the entire palace. When the various plotlines come together in a final conflict, the story is brought to a satisfying, if unexpected, ending. A quick moving plot and sassy, believable dialogue make this a compelling and enjoyable mystery, with just the right amount of romance and magic. The main characters are well drawn and surprisingly likable, while secondary characters also develop in endearing ways. The rich, Middle Eastern cultural context adds to the author's adept worldbuilding. Intimacy is dealt with in a straightforward way, without graphic details, and a subtle message of strength is portrayed through the brave independence of the protagonist. VERDICT This well-written mystery will be a surefire hit with teens.—Sunnie Lovelace, Wallingford Public Library, CT

I didn’t love it, but I didn’t particularly hate it either. If we’re talking specifics, lets just say that from the 30% mark to the 70% mark I merely tolerated this book. It wasn’t bad or awful or unbearable or anything of the sort, not at all. It was merely…cold. The Wrath and The Dawn begins with a nail-biting scene. It’s kind of a risky opening, considering that the reader goes into the story virtually blind and the prologue may give away a little too much right in the beginning, but the author made it work. Somehow. And thereafter begins the story of Shahrzad, who volunteers to be Caliph Khalid’s bride—Khalid who marries and then kills each of his brides every dawn—in order to avenge the murder of her best friend Shiva at the hands of the boy-king. Little does she know that not everything is as it seems and Khalid is not everything he shows himself to be.Shahrzad (Shazi) was a force to be reckoned with. With her wit and her sheer charm and her give-it-like-it-is attitude, she manages to leave Khalid with no choice but to keep her alive. But her every breath comes with a price…a price that the King must pay. I loved that Shazi was strong and level-headed and more interesting to me than Khalid ever could be. But in all honesty, apart from these facts, I really didn’t care about her much. She was…cold. There comes that word again. But it’s true. Shazi (like every other character in the book) lacked emotion. Sure her character was smart and self-dependant but to read her inner monologue was, in a word, agonising. It felt like all her emotions—hate, anger, confusion, infatuation, love, everything—ran on one straight line. She felt like a piece of cardboard and for a book that promises to be pretty much the book of the year, it was both amusing and disheartening to see that the MC itself lacked depth and was abundant in lousiness.Khalid was a character I was really looking forward to, having read all the quotes of the book beforehand and anticipating a sullen, broody, swoony man. Instead, what I got was a boy who was angry at everyone and everything and then Shazi changed his mind by just being herself and wow I’ve read this in a million books before. In the aspect of Shazi managing to bring Khalid out of his “shell,” it’s the clichéd stuff, you guys. Speaking of shells, HOLY HOLY RHEA HE KILLS THE GIRLS OF THE KINGDOM EVERY MORNING AND THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM BEING A SOCIAL PARIAH GEEZUS WOMAN. I wasn’t sure exactly what it was about Shazi that drew him to her—I certainly could see that she was smart, but really, Khalid was suspicious of her right until he fell in love with her. And then of course, it didn’t matter at all that she had come to kill him.Again, the romance was just…sad. And I’m not talking star-crossed sad. I’m talking Oh-dear-Lord-they’re-so-fake-please-God-stop-this sad. A lot of readers, however, have loved the Khalid-Shazi love story and while it wasn’t for me all all, I can understand the appeal. Because there’s this:“Love is—a shade of what I feel.”And this:“I love you, a thousand times over. And I will never apologize for it.”And my personal favourite:“What are you doing to me, you plague of a girl?” he whispered.“If I’m a plague, then you should keep your distance, unless you plan on being destroyed.” The weapons still in her grasp, she shoved against his chest.“No.” His hands dropped to her waist. “Destroy me.”OMG RHEA SO WHAT WENT WRONG?Honestly? Everything. Like I mentioned before, I read many quotes of the book before I started to read the book, and they were so, so swoony. But when they actually became a part of the book, when I was in the moment with Khalid and Shazi and their unfortunate little love, the same swoony quotes came out sounding bland and meaningless and forced and all wrong. While I really don’t mind third-person POV, it seemed to me like even that worked against this book. It made me feel detached from not only the characters themselves, but from the narrative and the setting and just everything about the setting. As for the writing? Renée Ahdieh’s writing reminded me a lot of Lauren Oliver’s writing, in which it was over-discriptive about irrelevant things and had analogies and similies that flew right above my head. Maybe I’m not the right type of reader for her writing (is that a thing?) but I’m still debating about the merits of reading the next book of the series. Apparently, the series is a duology and I suppose I could take my chances on reading just one more book. And if I’m being completely honest, the sneak peek into The Rose and The Dagger did entice me a bit. But as for The Wrath and The Dawn? Complete, epic fail.Rhea @ Rhea's Neon Journal

A compelling YA retelling of 1001 Nights By schmettajames I'm a big fan of fairytale retellings, and I'm always looking for ones that are outside the usual western European stories. The Wrath and the Dawn is a retelling of 1001 Nights (sometimes called the Arabian Nights), a collection of traditional Arabic folk tales with a framing story about a murderous king who kills his new wives at dawn every morning. In this version, 18-year-old Khalid is the Caliph (or King) of Khorasan. Every day, he takes a new bride, who is then murdered the following morning. After her best friend is killed, a young woman named Shahrzad volunteers to become the Caliph's next bride. She want revenge, but to get it, she'll have to make it past the first night. She tells him a story and he's intrigued enough to keep her alive for another day. And thus begins an elaborate power struggle between the spouses, as Shahrzad begins to see that her husband is perhaps not the monster she assumes him to be.I really enjoyed The Wrath and the Dawn. Shahrzad is an awesome heroine. Even with her need for revenge, she's smart enough to take the long view and she finds ways to keep Khalid fascinated enough to spare her life each day. Khalid is an interesting character. A guy who kills a wife a day isn't exactly appealing, but the author makes him compelling. It's clear from the beginning that Khalid isn't a just a psychopath and that there's something more going on, but Shahrzad will have to break down a lot of barriers to get to the truth. Their game of cat and mouse is fascinating to read about, and I had moments of dread when Shahrzad was pushing at Khalid, wondering what might make him snap. And as she's plotting her revenge, she finds herself developing unexpected feelings for her husband. It's a tense, absorbing read.I did have some small issues with the writing. There were times when the descriptions felt a bit overdone. For example, every time characters are eating, we're given a detailed description of the food, which felt unnecessary after the first couple of times. And the reader is constantly reminded of the eye colors of the two main characters (hazel for Shahrzad and amber for Khalid). Eye color seems to be mentioned every few pages, and I found it annoying. But these are minor quibbles, and I'm sure many readers won't be bothered by them. Also, I expected there to be more stories within the main story, given the source material, but there are only a few.I highly recommend The Wrath and the Dawn, and I'll be back for the sequel next year.

Non-western setting, retelling of a great classic, so much potential for a great main character, for an awesome setting we don't get to see often, for intense and authentic conflict and tension and I was ALL OVER IT.The setting stuff played out for the most part. That was good. However:Prologue: Gave away the big revel. RIGHT THERE. Explained why the Big Bad was doing Big Bad Things. And it wasn't Just Because, but because of this Other Big Bad Thing. So, right away exonerates the bad guy, you know he's not really a bad guy after all, and that he will make the perfect love interest to be Saved and Redeemed. Not, you know, the one that you believe is really bad all along and that belief will drive the conflict and heighten the emotional stakes and keep you on the edge of your seat as the main character fights both the Big Bad Things he's doing and a growing attraction to him.THANKS A LOT FOR RUINING IT BEFORE CHAPTER ONE!So, chapters start. I can see why, for pacing and tension, there needed to be an early and then frequent changes of POV characters, but it made it hard to get to know or connect with any one character. Though this could have been a good thing since it therefore took longer for me to start to hate them all.Every POV character but the main character felt completely unnecessary and ridiculous. There's this big melodramatic (and I REALLY mean melodramatic) tangle of people trying to "rescue" the main character from a situation she voluntarily entered with the understanding that she had a job to do here and maybe they should have thought about that instead of just trying to go get her back which could undermine everything she was trying to accomplish and possibly put her in even more danger. But then:She didn't seem to be in any real danger after a day or so. There was a completely unconvincing and throwaway attempt to make it seem as if she was, but other than that, all "danger" was us being told she was in danger when everything that was actually happening completely contradicted that. Thus, all the ongoing rescue attempt stuff felt even more ridiculous, especially since no one made any attempt to try to contact her or find out if she really did need rescuing.Insta-love. "Love triangle" that was pure melodrama and served only to drive the unnecessary and annoying rescue attempt. The characters began to feel interchangeable. Even the main characters. No attempt was made that I could see to make the characters actions, choices, attitudes, or behavior fit the purported time and place. Not even to acknowledge that it was unusual for the time and place. Modern mores and reactions plopped into a non-modern setting. To be honest, I quit skimming after 55% or so just so I would be able to review the book without explosive and virulent cursing. Since it's a reboot, and there will be a sequel, I know enough of how it's has to end that I can safely not care and move on with my life.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is an 1876 novel about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. The story is set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived. Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother Sid. Tom dirties his clothes in a fight and is made to whitewash the fence the next day as punishment. He cleverly persuades his friends to trade him small treasures for the privilege of doing his work. He then trades the treasures for Sunday School tickets which one normally receives for memorizing verses, redeeming them for a Bible, much to the surprise and bewilderment of the superintendent who thought "it was simply preposterous that this boy had warehoused two thousand sheaves of Scriptural wisdom on his premises—a dozen would strain his capacity, without a doubt." Tom falls in love with Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town, and persuades her to get "engaged" by kissing him. But their romance collapses when she learns Tom has been "engaged" previously to Amy Lawrence. Shortly after Becky shuns him, he accompanies Huckleberry Finn to the graveyard at night, where they witness the murder of Dr. Robinson.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: Unabridged Edition, by Mark Twain

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-British actor Mike McShane provides a superb portrayal of Mark Twain's classic characters, nailing the Mississippi drawl and cadence. For those who know and love the story or are following along with an unabridged edition, however, this production is marred somewhat by what the publisher has chosen to leave out. The more descriptive chapters are shortened or expurgated entirely, which is understandable in the interest of editing for time. Some of the more distasteful racial epithets are gone as well, although Injun Joe retains his moniker. Sid and Mary are also cut entirely, as well as references to smoking, slavery, most of Tom's ludicrously funny romantic notions about the violence inflicted by pirates and robbers, and even the naked figure in the schoolmaster's anatomy book. The result is a watered down Tom and, especially, Huck. The ending also lacks the satisfaction of the original version. The party scene where the fortune is revealed has been cut as has Twain's concluding paragraphs which "endeth this chronicle." It lacks even the closure of the customary, "You have been listening to-." The sturdy plastic case will survive many circulations. If your facility serves an elementary-age population for which the language of the original would not be appropriate, or there is a teacher looking for a sanitized version, McShane's excellent performance makes this edition worth recommending.Diana Dickerson, White Pigeon Community Schools, MI Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Huckleberry Finn may be the greater book, but Tom Sawyer has always been more widely read. Moreover, it is a book that can be enjoyed equally by both children and adults. Twain, who called it a "hymn" to boyhood, would be thrilled that in narrator Patrick Fraley his hymn has found its most passionate voice. Many good unabridged readings of Tom Sawyer have already been recorded, but most are simply that: readings. Fraley's performance is something more; in attempting to bring each character to life, his enthusiasm for the material is so palpable that the mere sound of his voice commands attention. A can't-miss addition to all libraries, including those that have other Tom Sawyer programs. Kent Rasmussen, Thousand Oaks, CA Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gardner’s reading of Twain’s classic convinces us why certain titles remain in the pantheon of must-reads (and must-listens). Gardner’s resonant tones roll over the rich, extensive vocabulary, almost as if Twain himself were telling the story. He reads the varying country dialects in a natural manner, conveying Tom’s spunkiness and quick wit. He uses higher pitches for the female characters, imparting an innocent breathiness into Becky Thatcher’s dialogue and a solid, forthrightness into Aunt Polly’s. Although the nineteenth-century language and syntax may seem a bit arcane, the delightful audio enables kids to enjoy this compelling tale, which might seem daunting in book form. The cover art depicting Tom and a friend whitewashing the fence is appealing. Grades 5-8. --Patricia Austin

Frank This review applies specifically to the April 2010, Sterling Edition, illustrated by Robert Ingpen:I'm beginning to feel quite frustrated with the limited publishing information given to books on Amazon. For example, most books where you may click to "look inside" will default to the most common paperback. For books like Tom Sawyer, that is fine if you need the book for high school English class, where any copy cheap enough to write notes in the margins will do. I wanted a copy of Tom Sawyer to keep and love. I saw this publication on Amazon, but it had so little info and the one review given was a single sentence about the general value of Twain's story. The truth is, one doesn't buy this particular printing unless one is already convinced of it's literary excellency! So I am about to do Amazon a huge favor by telling you what it didn't tell me. For about $15, the asking price at the time of this review, you can invest in a real treat for your self or someone you love and wish to inspire. This printing was meant to mark the one hundredth anniversary of Twain's death (2010). The story is unabridged, provided in full original text. It is positively rich with watercolor illustrations by Robert Ingpen. I just skimmed through the book looking for one that I especially liked, but I couldn't pick just one. In design, they are exactly as I would have dreamed them to be. Barefoot Tom, balancing a piece of straw on his nose, Huck Finn with a dead cat, Tom and puppy in church, Injun Joe- terrifying....each one pulls me in to read the text. The fabulous, wrapping cover art is also printed at the end of the book, so won't be lost if the dust jacket is damaged. The sewn binding is well constructed and the book lays nearly flat when open, so you may enjoy all of the pictures and layout without damaging the book. The inclusion of a pale blue place marking ribbon is a lovely touch. There is a thoughtful biography of Mark Twain proceeding the story. Also, provided are the author's and illustrators notes.I have a boy, six going on seven. He is a reader and is happy to consume Magic Tree House and Box Car Children books at alarming speed under the covers at night when he is supposed to be asleep. I'll admit I was missing our former habit of reading together. So we read classics aloud together as a family. For less money than a video game this book will provide hours of family entertainment. I hope my son will be inspired to read it again and again. It will have a place in our library and be a reference for years to come. It is heirloom quality. It would make a very special gift to a favorite boy of any age. In fact, I am considering getting another copy for my father, who loves Twain. Incidentally, not being able to ascertain the quality of this book through the Amazon web site, I went to a little local bookstore where I could put my hands on it first. I ended up buying it there, paying full price- about $5 more than Amazon was asking. They wrapped the book for free in nice heavy paper and since there was no shipping- I think I came out better for it. Before my son had opened this package, he knew it was a book to be awed by. Awesome it is- mostly for Mark Twains' masterful kntting of prose, but also for the cover and publishing.

Davis The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: Unabridged and IllustratedThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer that I bought from amazon.com is a paperback Piccadilly Classics (Unabridged and Illustrated) edition, written by Mark Twain (Samuel Langborne Clemens) and illustrated by T. Williams, and published by Piccadilly Books, Ltd. copyright 2010.I am VERY pleased with this edition's keeping to the Mark Twain's original manuscript and the use of (from my understanding...and by the looks of it) wonderfully-used original illustrations. I mean, really, the size of the book, typeface and insertion of the illustrations are artfully done and flow very nicely. The thing that makes me sick about this book, is that it is less than 1-month old and falling apart DURING my first reading of it. Such a fun, beautiful and timeless book deserves to be printed accordingly. A classic deserves a matching binding and cover quality that will withstand numerous generations of readers effortlessly.Specific problems I have had with my copy include: (1) The pages are bound together unevenly. I had a mind just to send the book back to amazon when I saw this flaw, because I knew they would right the problem immediately. My kids saw some of the illustrations and cover, however, and were so ready for me to read it NOW, that I kept it and decided it would just be an imperfect addition to our library. But more imperfections promptly presented themselves. (2) Because of the uneven binding job, the cover tore at the bottom where there are no pages to hold it up (the unevenly bound pages "slant" to full starting at the front cover back). (3) The cheaply-laminated cover has ALREADY started curling apart at both corners (front and back), and in the middle (front and back), where I hold the book to read it.This edition was unfortunately not available in hardcover. I would LOVE a hardcover, quality copy of this specific edition!

Only fools would suggest otherwise. Unfortunately, other fools have censored both books. This is an obscenity. Do these morons actually think that they need to protect the reading public from ideas that were the cultural norm 175 years ago? What unmitigated, insufferable, ignominious gall. Thankfully, Amazon can still provide us with the original versions of these brilliant books. The suggestion that reading Twain in his original prose somehow endangers the public good is both specious and ridiculous. So, then, if we read Lolita will we become pedophiles? If we read Pound will we become fascists? If we read Portnoy's Complaint will we masturbate constantly? The exquisite sensitivity of some groups within our society says more about their determined unwillingness to embrace the freedom and democracy they enjoy than anything else. To hell with them. Buy these wonderful books and read them guilt-free.
