A hilarious comedy/thriller set during WWII. I am sure you have heard of ‘Operation Mincemeat’ the ingenious plan to land a dead man on a Spanish beach – to fool the Nazis and send their jack-booted, Panzer-clad, stiff-armed, blond-haired boys up the wrong alley. Allow me to let you into a secret. I was the rehearsal, some months before hostilities began; before the unpleasantness, so to speak. I was the practice run; the ‘upper-class twit’ sent on a wild goose chase, scattering fair Albion’s imminent enemies hither and thither. And, if I were to die in the process, so be it. So long as the suitcase full of faux documents survived, I, Pelham Hardiman was of no consequence. But, my friend, I can tell you their greatest error, their erreur greates, they forgot they were dealing with an Englishman, and a Hardimann at that. And let us not forget the femme fatale.

Nick and Tesla's Special Effects Spectacular: A Mystery with Animatronics, Alien Makeup, Camera Gear, and Other Movie Magic You Can Make Yourself!, by Bob Pflugfelder, Steve Hockensmith

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Twin brother and sister Nick and Tesla Holt find themselves involved in a dual mystery: the disappearance of their parents who are abroad (supposedly) and the sabotage of their favorite comic book hero. To distract themselves from solving the first "grown-up mystery," the twins and their friends dive into action to save the job of a line producer who happens to be Demarco's aunt. With the help of movie aficionado Silas, and aspiring stuntman Demarco, the friends help to solve the mystery and weirdness on the set of The Stupefying Metalman. There's a smorgasbord of characters: Uncle Newt, Elisha and Monique (Demarco's sisters), Aunt Zoe, Mr and Mrs. Holt, all of the characters on the set of the movie, among others. All of these figures, many with shallow development, provide for a slow and confusing read. Thankfully, the main characters provide some balance and, refreshingly, all of the female protagonists, including Aunt Zoe, avoid negative gender stereotypes, proving themselves to be critical thinkers and leaders. Fans of cinematography and action movies will enjoy this series installment, which includes step-by-step instructions for creating movie props. VERDICT Readers who like the "Nick and Tesla" series, detailed mysteries, and learning how to make movie paraphernalia will enjoy this offering.—Gwen Collier, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY

Review “This was a great continuation of the Nick and Tesla series…. It’s a fun mystery read with some science, some humor, cute illustrations throughout, and some neat experiments/projects. I would recommend to middle grade readers who like mystery and science.” – Hidden in Pages   “What an absolute treat!... Nick and Tesla's Special Effects Spectacular is a terrific addition to this awesome series…. I can't wait for the next one!” – A Bookish Way of Life“The book gives great behind-the scenes information about making a blockbuster film, including technical terms and insider slang. Kids love movies, a mystery, and projects, and this book provides all three.”—Catholic Library World“[A]nother banner book by these science geeks...who live to make science fun.”—Geeks of Doom

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Science, mystery and siblings By Shala Kerrigan I like science and diy quite a bit, for children or for adults. Combine it with a story to inspire creativity and you've got a winner. The siblings, Tesla and Nick have a good, strong relationship with the harassment you'd expect if you have a sibling along with love. Their friends have personality quirks. There are points where the characterizations seem a little 2 dimensional. There is humor though the entire book, some of it very base, that would have strongly appealed to my daughter when she was in that reading range. There is also a good feeling of looking behind the scenes of making a movie. Not the drama of the characters, but in the details and explanations. The mystery is laid out in a way that has clues available to follow. The projects combined with the story are things that could inspire kids to try making their own mini-movies- which is definitely a good thing. I do wish that it had described story boards but that's a personal preference because it helps with making up stories. The projects focus was effects and filming. It was easy to read, and it's a series that I have recommended to people in the past and will recommend again.

The newest installment of the series,"Nick and Tesla's Special Effects Spectacular"(book #5) continues this exciting blend of science and mystery. There are detailed drawings and directions for a number of gadgets that are created in the story. These projects range from a Super-Stable Camera-Steady Rig to a Superheroic Grappling Hook and Wrist Launcher...An easy recipe for Horrifyingly Horrible Alien Zomboid Makeup is also included. The dialogue between my daughter's favorite characters (DeMarco and his sisters Elisha and Monique) had her laughing out loud. She especially loves how fearful DeMarco is of Elisha. It is their Aunt Zoe who invites them with their mother (Ms. Davison) and friends (Nick,Tesla and Silas) to tour the set of a film that she is producing. They are thrilled to see their hero, Cash Ashkinos as he makes his first non "B movie." There is plenty of on-set drama and intrigue as more characters are introduced and the tension escalates. This book was a special treat for my daughter and I, who are more artistically than scientifically inclined. We found a good amount of "behind the scenes" information (including both proper terminology and insider slang) surrounding the process of making a feature film. The end of the story has a fun, campy feel, like a Scooby-Doo mystery...

Loved the strong sibling relationship By SBCincinnati This Nick and Tesla's book is a mixed bag. There are things I really like about the book and others that I do not. The story is very suited for its intended audience of 6th-8th graders.Pros:1. Siblings, Nick and Tesla, work together as a team. They honestly seem to like each other and appreciate the other's gift and talents. Sure, they tease each other occasionally and at times get annoyed, but most of the time they get along well.2. The instructions to build your own inventions that go along with what Nick and Tesla are building throughout the story. The advance copy of the book I received did not have all the projects included, but the instructions for the homemade steadicam and zombie make-up were pretty stinking cool. For the most part, minimal adult help is required(put sometimes necessary) for these projects.3. The authors seemed to have a thorough knowledge of life on a movie set, which added much to the value of the story.Cons:1. Writing style at times is slow and clunky. I could barely resist the urge to start circling all the "to be" verbs, which really slow down the pace of the writing (To be verbs include: am, is, was, were, have been).2. Nick and Tesla's parents apparently were kidnapped in a previous book. The siblings mention this on rare occasions. Seems like too big of an issue to be treated so minimally.3. All the kids in the book show little respect for authority or the adults in their lives. Probably typical for this age, but have I an issue with the consistency in which disrespect/disregard reared its ugly head. (The kids weren't nasty to adults, they just ignored their instructions.)

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Diversion Illustrated Classics), by Mark Twain

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-British actor Mike McShane provides a superb portrayal of Mark Twain's classic characters, nailing the Mississippi drawl and cadence. For those who know and love the story or are following along with an unabridged edition, however, this production is marred somewhat by what the publisher has chosen to leave out. The more descriptive chapters are shortened or expurgated entirely, which is understandable in the interest of editing for time. Some of the more distasteful racial epithets are gone as well, although Injun Joe retains his moniker. Sid and Mary are also cut entirely, as well as references to smoking, slavery, most of Tom's ludicrously funny romantic notions about the violence inflicted by pirates and robbers, and even the naked figure in the schoolmaster's anatomy book. The result is a watered down Tom and, especially, Huck. The ending also lacks the satisfaction of the original version. The party scene where the fortune is revealed has been cut as has Twain's concluding paragraphs which "endeth this chronicle." It lacks even the closure of the customary, "You have been listening to-." The sturdy plastic case will survive many circulations. If your facility serves an elementary-age population for which the language of the original would not be appropriate, or there is a teacher looking for a sanitized version, McShane's excellent performance makes this edition worth recommending.Diana Dickerson, White Pigeon Community Schools, MI Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Huckleberry Finn may be the greater book, but Tom Sawyer has always been more widely read. Moreover, it is a book that can be enjoyed equally by both children and adults. Twain, who called it a "hymn" to boyhood, would be thrilled that in narrator Patrick Fraley his hymn has found its most passionate voice. Many good unabridged readings of Tom Sawyer have already been recorded, but most are simply that: readings. Fraley's performance is something more; in attempting to bring each character to life, his enthusiasm for the material is so palpable that the mere sound of his voice commands attention. A can't-miss addition to all libraries, including those that have other Tom Sawyer programs. Kent Rasmussen, Thousand Oaks, CA Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gardner’s reading of Twain’s classic convinces us why certain titles remain in the pantheon of must-reads (and must-listens). Gardner’s resonant tones roll over the rich, extensive vocabulary, almost as if Twain himself were telling the story. He reads the varying country dialects in a natural manner, conveying Tom’s spunkiness and quick wit. He uses higher pitches for the female characters, imparting an innocent breathiness into Becky Thatcher’s dialogue and a solid, forthrightness into Aunt Polly’s. Although the nineteenth-century language and syntax may seem a bit arcane, the delightful audio enables kids to enjoy this compelling tale, which might seem daunting in book form. The cover art depicting Tom and a friend whitewashing the fence is appealing. Grades 5-8. --Patricia Austin

Frank This review applies specifically to the April 2010, Sterling Edition, illustrated by Robert Ingpen:I'm beginning to feel quite frustrated with the limited publishing information given to books on Amazon. For example, most books where you may click to "look inside" will default to the most common paperback. For books like Tom Sawyer, that is fine if you need the book for high school English class, where any copy cheap enough to write notes in the margins will do. I wanted a copy of Tom Sawyer to keep and love. I saw this publication on Amazon, but it had so little info and the one review given was a single sentence about the general value of Twain's story. The truth is, one doesn't buy this particular printing unless one is already convinced of it's literary excellency! So I am about to do Amazon a huge favor by telling you what it didn't tell me. For about $15, the asking price at the time of this review, you can invest in a real treat for your self or someone you love and wish to inspire. This printing was meant to mark the one hundredth anniversary of Twain's death (2010). The story is unabridged, provided in full original text. It is positively rich with watercolor illustrations by Robert Ingpen. I just skimmed through the book looking for one that I especially liked, but I couldn't pick just one. In design, they are exactly as I would have dreamed them to be. Barefoot Tom, balancing a piece of straw on his nose, Huck Finn with a dead cat, Tom and puppy in church, Injun Joe- terrifying....each one pulls me in to read the text. The fabulous, wrapping cover art is also printed at the end of the book, so won't be lost if the dust jacket is damaged. The sewn binding is well constructed and the book lays nearly flat when open, so you may enjoy all of the pictures and layout without damaging the book. The inclusion of a pale blue place marking ribbon is a lovely touch. There is a thoughtful biography of Mark Twain proceeding the story. Also, provided are the author's and illustrators notes.I have a boy, six going on seven. He is a reader and is happy to consume Magic Tree House and Box Car Children books at alarming speed under the covers at night when he is supposed to be asleep. I'll admit I was missing our former habit of reading together. So we read classics aloud together as a family. For less money than a video game this book will provide hours of family entertainment. I hope my son will be inspired to read it again and again. It will have a place in our library and be a reference for years to come. It is heirloom quality. It would make a very special gift to a favorite boy of any age. In fact, I am considering getting another copy for my father, who loves Twain. Incidentally, not being able to ascertain the quality of this book through the Amazon web site, I went to a little local bookstore where I could put my hands on it first. I ended up buying it there, paying full price- about $5 more than Amazon was asking. They wrapped the book for free in nice heavy paper and since there was no shipping- I think I came out better for it. Before my son had opened this package, he knew it was a book to be awed by. Awesome it is- mostly for Mark Twains' masterful kntting of prose, but also for the cover and publishing.

Davis The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: Unabridged and IllustratedThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer that I bought from amazon.com is a paperback Piccadilly Classics (Unabridged and Illustrated) edition, written by Mark Twain (Samuel Langborne Clemens) and illustrated by T. Williams, and published by Piccadilly Books, Ltd. copyright 2010.I am VERY pleased with this edition's keeping to the Mark Twain's original manuscript and the use of (from my understanding...and by the looks of it) wonderfully-used original illustrations. I mean, really, the size of the book, typeface and insertion of the illustrations are artfully done and flow very nicely. The thing that makes me sick about this book, is that it is less than 1-month old and falling apart DURING my first reading of it. Such a fun, beautiful and timeless book deserves to be printed accordingly. A classic deserves a matching binding and cover quality that will withstand numerous generations of readers effortlessly.Specific problems I have had with my copy include: (1) The pages are bound together unevenly. I had a mind just to send the book back to amazon when I saw this flaw, because I knew they would right the problem immediately. My kids saw some of the illustrations and cover, however, and were so ready for me to read it NOW, that I kept it and decided it would just be an imperfect addition to our library. But more imperfections promptly presented themselves. (2) Because of the uneven binding job, the cover tore at the bottom where there are no pages to hold it up (the unevenly bound pages "slant" to full starting at the front cover back). (3) The cheaply-laminated cover has ALREADY started curling apart at both corners (front and back), and in the middle (front and back), where I hold the book to read it.This edition was unfortunately not available in hardcover. I would LOVE a hardcover, quality copy of this specific edition!

Only fools would suggest otherwise. Unfortunately, other fools have censored both books. This is an obscenity. Do these morons actually think that they need to protect the reading public from ideas that were the cultural norm 175 years ago? What unmitigated, insufferable, ignominious gall. Thankfully, Amazon can still provide us with the original versions of these brilliant books. The suggestion that reading Twain in his original prose somehow endangers the public good is both specious and ridiculous. So, then, if we read Lolita will we become pedophiles? If we read Pound will we become fascists? If we read Portnoy's Complaint will we masturbate constantly? The exquisite sensitivity of some groups within our society says more about their determined unwillingness to embrace the freedom and democracy they enjoy than anything else. To hell with them. Buy these wonderful books and read them guilt-free.

Having seen enough of death and violence, he wants nothing more to do with the struggle that cost him his freedom and his love. But old loyalties die hard and, despite himself, Davy is drawn into a dangerous conspiracy on behalf of his fellow Provos . . . .Meanwhile, Fiona has forged a new life for herself in Vancouver, British Columbia, far away from the war-torn streets of Belfast. Now a vice-principal at a local elementary school, she has a successful career, good friends, and a new man in her life. Yet she remains haunted by painful memories of her troubled homeland―and the love she left behind.Patrick Taylor's Now and in the Hour of Our Death is a moving and compelling portrait of ordinary men and women caught up in a conflict not of their making, and of the way the past holds onto us even as we try to move on into an uncertain future.

Review

“Pray for Us Sinners is written with heartfelt urgency to explain Ulster rather than demonize the place and the population. A deeply felt thriller and a very valuable one.” ―The Globe and Mail

“Flawlessly researched and . . . nails the chips-and-guns-with-everything atmosphere of violence in mid-1970s Ulster.” ―Quill & Quire on Pray for Us Sinners

“Taylor . . . captivates and entertains from the first word.” ―Publishers Weekly

I have read nearly everything Patrick Taylor has written. I highly recommend this writer. Now and In the Hour of Our Death will make you laugh, cry and cause frustration but you will never find this work boring!!

The "F" word was used more than I cared for, but having been to the "olde sod", I know it is the way folks talk. I enjoyed the book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The sequel to "Pray for US sinner" By Scott Simmons The ending to "Pray for US sinners" was such a sudden shocker that there needed to be a follow up and I'm glad Patrick wrote this one. It put an ending to the story that had gripped me, I want to find out what happened to them all. These two books tell a good tale but also help the readers get some insight into the deep problems of Northern Ireland. It is to bad some readers are shocked about reading about the war and the swearing. I would recommend having a few pints with someone from that era. You would find out the word F*** is used like the word "like" by teens. It is just how they talk. War is ugly and one should probably not read these books if you do not like gritty action thrillers. The books does put our safe and gentle life into prescriptive; gosh that line at the mall was terrible and it took 5 minutes to find a parking spot close to the door. Thanks Patrick they are tragic tales that make me want to visit Ireland.

Lion Heart: A Scarlet Novel, by A.C. Gaughen

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—In this finale to the "Scarlet" trilogy (Bloomsbury), Marian (aka Scarlet), imprisoned for months by her ruthless uncle Prince John, dares to escape, only to learn that her father's life is in jeopardy. Her grandmother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, asks her to serve as her knife-wielding spy in order to bring King Richard home safely, but Scarlet, now the recently titled Lady Huntingdon, decides that she must return to Nottinghamshire to face her fate and reunite with her true love, Robin Hood. As with Scarlet (2012) and Lady Thief (2014), this volume is replete with action and romance, each chapter adding just enough tension to continually engage teens. Scarlet once again emerges as a complex, well-developed protagonist, while Rob, Eleanor, and David (her knight protector) are quite well-rounded secondary characters. The action is fast-moving, the dialogue realistic, and the historical details accurately portrayed. While Gaughen admits to having tampered with King Richard's time line in the author's note, she clearly explains how the tale's events and personages fit into their historical context. Potentially difficult vocabulary is elucidated within the prose, and the subplots are masterfully interwoven with the action of the principal story. VERDICT An must-read series conclusion, sure to spark interest in the life and times of Richard the Lionhearted.—Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, formerly at LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI

Review

“Following in the tradition of Tamora Pierce's stories of feisty, kickass heroines and drawing on some factual underpinnings. . . Gaughen's tale will satisfy teen readers seeking action-packed romantic adventure set alluringly in another age. Fans of Scarlet will celebrate both this opportunity to revisit Gaughen's colorfully depicted long-ago world and her suspenseful ending to a lively story.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“A must-read series conclusion, sure to spark interest in the life and times of Richard the Lionhearted.” ―School Library Journal

“Debut novelist Gaughen does more than offer a rip-roaring tale, though it is that. The story, told in Scar's distinctive first-person voice, captivates and gets readers as deeply into the heart of a troubled girl . . . has plenty for both the romantic and the adventure lover.” ―starred review, Booklist on SCARLET

“A reimagined Robin Hood tale with a distinctive twist.” ―RT Book Reviews on SCARLET

“Plenty of swashbuckling adventure and a hearty dose of romance power this re-imagining of the legend of Robin Hood.” ―School Library Journal on SCARLET

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. My favorite book so far in 2015 By AnitaLove2Read There is no possible way to express my utter joy and love for this series. I will be hunting down and collecting these books in hard copy for my personal library for sure!I probably am a little bias because since a child I have always loved the story of Robin Hood, and outside of Beauty and the Beast, finding re-tellings of Robin Hood is one of my favorite hunts. This series was just as beautiful and action packed as one could have hoped for, and I will not be able to recommend it enough."For the longest time, no one really knew about me. I were Rob's secret, his informant, his shadow in dark places. They didn't see me, and I didn't mind that they didn't see."In this conclusion to the series, Scarlet has changed, she is no longer hiding, but she is fighting for what she believes in; but first she had to realize that when she spoke, people stopped and listened. Lion Heart was so perfect in its conclusion, with plenty of Rob and Scar moments that made my heart so happy, but the action was not ignored either. Truly my favorite parts were of Rob and Scarlet though, Robin was written so perfectly with just the right amount of arrogance and humility, and their banter had me laughing out loud at times. The politics and action keep the story moving forward, and I found myself growing to like and get attached to new characters. I kind of didn't want this story to end. While reading, more than once I was afraid of the turn the book was making, but A.C. Gaughen does not disappoint!I'm trying to think of a part of the book that maybe I wasn't thrilled with; a small point of criticism, but this is me honestly and truly gushing over a book. I just absolutely loved it.Rated: PG-13, there's cussing, fighting, blood..typical Robin Hood stuffGenre: Young Adult - Fairy tale retell, Romance, HistoricalRating: 5 Beautiful and wonderful stars. Can I give it 6?

By kindlemom1 (My Guilty Obsession) I'm not sure I have ever been this excited nor this nervous for an ending to a trilogy. This trilogy has been one of my most favorites from the word go and when you love something so much, it is hard not to pick up the last book with tons of emotion. Can I just tell you how much I have missed these characters and how very much I loved this book, this last, so sad to see it end, book? Because I did. I loved it all. The detail, the history, the characters, the plot, the action, the sweet romance, the everything and I really am so sad that that was it but so happy with the way it all ended and came together.Gaughan did such an amazing job with this whole series. Intricately integrating fiction with fact and creating a retelling that was both unique and entertaining.Scarlet isn't your average heroine, nor is she your average thief. She is cunning, smart, beautiful, passionate, fierce, and willing to die to save those she loves and her country. Willing to fight for land, love, and freedom like so many from this era.All of the characters were phenomenal and I loved every single minute of their interactions. So many scenes brought tears to my eyes and made me smile that it was crazy. I have come to love all these characters so much and it was so great seeing so many things, so many good things for once, happen to, and for, so many of them. None of them have had it easy and they have all lost someone so to see some happiness, finally, was just..amazing.This truly is hands down one of my favorite YA historical reads out there. We need more like this in this genre because it really is a stand out series with beautiful writing and fabulous characters.I'm so happy with the way this ended, even if not everyone got what they had coming to them, this ended on such a high that it was all worth it. I am so sad that I now have to say goodbye to this world and the people in it. I will sorely miss them all.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I only wish that there was an epilogue By Bookworm496 I literally can't stop smiling over this book. It was just as amazingly written as the first two, the action was jut as awesome, and (my personal favorite) the romance was EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST TWO COMBINED! The only thing wrong with this holy grail of the series was that THERE IS NO EPILOGUE! I really want to know how the lives of the characters go on after the end of the book, and while the author's note at the end does say the gates of some of the characters, they were all minor characters that I was scratching my head trying to remember.Other than that, it was PERFECTION!
