This book will remind you what it felt like in your head to be a kid, and have great adventures on seemingly ordinary days. Not a book for kids, just about them and their stories in a sleepy beach town in the 1950's. I know you will enjoy it.

You Gotta Love This Book By deena metzger Kids in the Wind wryly challenges the pervading notion that adults are smarter, more complex and more interesting than kids. Wethern’s characters, though young, are smart, original, audacious and complex. Who knew childhood could be so true, so entirely engaging and so wise. You gotta love these kids. You gotta love this book. You won’t put the book down until you’ve lived it through from cover to cover. Storyteller, Brad Wethern is a master.

When our oldest was younger (he's 21 now, and I'm talking about when he was 7-9 here) the books were very juvenile. Drawings, almost cartoon like, instead of pictures, and for the most part the 'recipes' were things like fruit skewers-literally just putting fruit on skewers, how easy is that?But this book by DK (Dorling Kindersley) is a whopping 300+ pages, and has colored pictures of every recipe. And to be clear, there are some actual recipes here-no more fruit skewers, and peanut butter dip (which was yes, just peanut butter)Our 11 and 7 year old helped me with numerous recipes here:+Classic Coleslaw-with summer rigth around the corner, we love cooking out on our trusty Weber grill. And who doesn't love coleslaw with a good burger? The kids and I made this, and while we prefer a vinegar based slaw, this one was ok. It lightens things up a bit using some yogurt, instead of just mayo. On the other hand, we found the dressing a bit heavy.+Bell Pepper Hummus-the kids are willing to try just about anything you can dip a chip or carrot into, so why not some hummus? My 11 year old enjoyed cutting up the peppers-with some help and supervision from me!-and they thought this was pretty tasty. I love hummus, and I thought it was pretty tasty as well. Easy to make too+Beef Pasta-my 11 year old made this pretty much on his own. I chopped the veggies and laid things out and then he put everything together. I liked that they put some vegetables in here, but overall the sauce was pretty blah. The addition of green pesto added some flavor, but where is the parsley, the cilantro, the cayenne pepper? Something! I wasn't the only one disappointed in this very pedestrian pasta.+ Apple Crumble-during the same meal we made our coleslaw for, we prepared with Apple Crumble for dessert. YUM! Of course, pretty much any apple pie is going to be a hit in my house, but the boys liked this, and enjoyed preparing it, though I think that's because they stole more than a few slices of apple.+Chocolate Fudge Brownies-Nope! This recipe calls for 18...yes, you read that right 18 tablespoons of butter. Ok, we went with it, but there is just too much butter and not enough chocolate. We mixed everything up, and the recipe said too cook for 20-25 minutes. I didn't think that sounded right, but again, we're going with it....when we took the cake out, it was still raw brownie batter. We were able to salvage it, but only after I cooked it for another 20 minutes! And yes, my oven is working properly. I'm thinking that cooking time was a misprint. In the end, these brownies were not tasty. Just way too much butter.One thing I do like is that each recipe spells out the equipment you will need. My kids can assemble all the ingredients and utensils they need for any given recipe.Aside from a few mishaps, this book is a wonderful introduction to cooking for kids. There are step by step instructions and picture, and since my kids are more visual learners I appreciated this.We are pretty adventurous eaters, and nothing in here scared my boys off. On the other hand, the lack of spices immediately tells me that many of these recipes are, simply put, going to be rather blah. This is one of the better kids cookbooks I've come across, and it's a good buy for the price, if you want to stick to the basics.

Most that I found were made for really young children with recipes that are extremely easy or they are designed to appeal to children by being filled with snacks and junk food. The Complete Children's Cookbook by DK has brought children's cooking to a whole new level. Filled with at least 4 full colored photographs per recipe, this book is absolutely gorgeous! These photos are very instructive and absolutely drool worthy. In fact, this book is so nicely done that it is as nice (possibly even nicer) than my most prize cookbooks.Inside you will find the basic kitchen safety, food safety and how to use cut, etc safely with photograph examples so there is no question what is meant. The recipes are amazing! Never would I have believed this was a children's cookbook had it not been for the children in the photographs. The recipes are something I'd find in my own collection. The basics like poaching an egg are covered, but then gets more interesting with recipes like: Potato Rösti, Noodle Soup (with baby corn and shrimp in a fish broth), Phyllo and Spinach Tarts, Zucchini Frittata, Quiche Lorraine, Rainbow Beef, Chocolate Profiteroles, and Raspberry Crème Brûlée to name a few. The recipes we've tried so far are delicious and I've got a long list to go. This book make my mouth water!DK as again given children another exceptional book to whet their minds as well as their appetites. Honestly, this book is amazing enough to add to anyone's cooking library and shouldn't be ignored just because it has Children in the title. This is a great book for beginner as well as a more seasoned cook and bridges all ages. The recipes are delicious and quite healthy and I can see any parent being delighted when her child served a dish made from this book to the whole family. The best part is the family WILL eat these dishes. They are delicious!Give the gift of cooking by presenting a child you love a copy of this book. It will be something they will use and treasure and possibly hand down to their children.

By JMM The Complete Children's Cookbook from DK Publishing is a quality cookbook for teaching your kids how to get started cooking. The book's editors did a great job - the design and layout of the book is fantastic; and it's a nicely curated selection of recipes, most of which are very easy to moderate in difficulty.The book begins with basic info on food prep, kitchen tools/equipment, and health - and then it's on to the fun part! There are over 100 recipes in the cookbook. They are organized into categories - Breakfast; Soups & Salads; Light Bites; Main Meals; Desserts; Cakes & Muffins; Cookies & Bars; Bread; and Party Time.This is obviously geared toward children - but to be honest it will appeal to adults such as myself who are not too experienced in the kitchen. Each step of the process is detailed and includes a photo, so there's really no way to get lost.

It made for some good conversation and thinking time together. A Bible verse is included that goes along with each case. We had some great talks about these verses together and even used this as part of our devotional time each night for a short while. I hope they keep writing these. We both have our eyes peeled for the next one!

The writing is actually over their head (probably targeted for more like the 8-11 range), but they love looking for clues and talking through the possible answers. Great purchase for bedtime reading and definitely something they'll circle back to once their reading improves.

Think these are going to be REALLY simple? Uh uh! Read carefully more than once as some are tricky. (Yes, I as an adult did not solve them all!)Meet Emily and Matthew the two detectives. Why wouldn't the video game scan? Why were all the ants dead in the ant farm? What was the reason behind the remote control helicopter crashing? Who stole the green Ferris Wheel ticket? How about Bessie the screwdriver? These are just a few to whet your appetite. You will even learn some interesting facts along the way. At the end of the book there are three Matthew Parker puzzles for you to solve.A linked index at the beginning of the Kindle version works well as does the index when you hit your "Go To" button. The answers are all at the back of the book but there is a link at the end of each mystery for easy access. Along with each answer there is also Bible Evidence, a verse given at the end of each solution. For example: Mr. Whitaker is convinced that he saw pots of green paint in the store paint display. In fact it was the yellow pollen on the windows reflecting on the blue paint can labels that gave that illusion. Scripture: I Corinthians 13:12 - "For now we see through a glass darkly."Well-written, fun and challenging book. Targeted for the 8-12 year old range I would suggest that some older kids would appreciate this too. Thanks, Liz

The characters are real and engaging - the sweetly stupid Bianca and her hoard of suitors, Baptista, who is more interested in selling his daughters to rich husbands than making them happy, the sly and masterful Petruchio, and most of all, Katherine, the Shrew. The play is full of action, comedy, and enough mistaken and hidden identities to keep the reader happily confused.Katherine, who appears to be "tamed" by Petruchio's cruelties, learns the art of subtlety and diplomacy that will enable her to survive in a society ruled by men. Her speech in the last scene is not a humbling affirmation of the superiority of men, but a tounge-in-cheek ridicule of Petruchio, Lucentio, and Hortensio, who think that a woman can be tamed like a wild animal by a few days of bumbling controll.The Folger Library of Shakespeare's plays are the most readable editions that I have seen. There are detailed side notes and definitions of unfamiliar words, which are perfect for the reader who is not familiar with Shakespearean English.

A Solinas "The Taming of the Shrew" is probably William Shakespeare's second most controversial play -- nobody can figure out if it's misogynistic or a biting double satire on the sexes. Whatever it is, it's still a witty and hilarious comedy that pits the titular "shrew" against a crazy guy determined to browbeat her into traditional subservience... and while they're no Beatrice and Benedick, it is lots of fun.Framing device: a local lord and his hunting party stumble across a drunken tinker, and decide to play an elaborate prank on him. They dress him in rich clothes, arrange fine food for him, and even drag a protesting servant boy in to pretend to be his wife. And they put on a performance for him as well: Baptista Minola has two daughters, the hot-tempered razor-tongued Katharina and the quiet, demure Bianca.Since Bianca is not allowed to marry until Katharina is, her suitors form an alliance to get the elder sister out of the way, which is made more complex when a young student named Luciento falls in love with Bianca, and comes up with a clever plan to woo her. Enter Petruchio, an impoverished nobleman with as sharp a wit as Katharina -- and since he's the only one willing to marry her, her father jumps on the chance. From the very beginning, Petruchio beats her over the head with crazy reverse psychology, a ridiculous wedding ceremony, and a honeymoon from hell.It's often debated whether "The Taming of the Shrew" is a sexist play or not, since the strong-willed, independent Katharina ends up another little obedient wifie, lecturing the other wives on giving their husbands "love, fair looks and true obedience." Blech.But consider: this speech comes from a woman who, after years of intimidating the men around her, has been browbeaten, emotionally abused and humiliated until her boorish hubby finally "breaks" her... not exactly a rousing celebration of "the taming of the shrew," or of Petruchio! If anything, Shakespeare seems to be hinting that women should be subtle about their rebellion (as Bianca is) rather than broadcasting it to the world... and perhaps that is what the "shrew" had really learned.And as usual, Shakespeare wraps the play in delicious wordplay ("You lie, in faith; for you are call'd plain Kate,/And bonny Kate, and sometimes Kate the curst"), weird situations (the ridiculous wedding), and an farcical romantic tangle centering on Bianca. And Shakespeare has some fun with the framing device about Christopher Sly -- while the lord is being a jerk, the whole situation is just so hilarious that it's impossible not to enjoy it.And the characters are pretty fun as well, even when you want to kick them in the backside -- Katharina is delightfully witty, bombastic and very intimidating, and Petruchio is a hilarious, witty jerk who knows just how to counter her. Bianca seems like a subservient doormat at first, but Shakespeare hints that (in her own way) she's just as rebellious as Katharina, unbeknownst to her clownish admirers and her worn-out dad."The Taming of the Shrew" seems like a pretty offensive piece until you see all the little barbs sticking out of the surface. Really uncomfortable, and truly brilliant.

Rockwell There are many reviews of the play below,, so I am reviewing this particular edition of tthe play. As someone reading all of Shakespeare for the second time, I am always alble to learn something from the World's Classics introduction. They are scolarly and complete and the text always has footnotes on the same page. I have tried other editions but these are the best. The Taming of the Shrew although it does contain episodes that are misogynistic to modern ears does portray a couple truly in love. As an early play Shakespeare is beginning to find his own voice.

By Fire Dad ^6 Icebound is book two of the Legend of the Shifters Series and it is packed with excitement and adventure. The characters have a lot of depth so you really feel like you get to know them well as you read and you are invested in what is going on with them. For such a young author I'm impressed with her attention to detail both in the story world and the characters. She has built a world that I can see in my mind when I read these and I'm really liking this series and looking forward to the next book.Ivy's friend is dead and she wants revenge, her journey continues as she returns with a rare plant that can give life and strength, but it can also destroy and cause pain. When she returns to the conservatory she must continue to learn more about her abilities, learn about the prophecy, and guard herself against a plot against her.Book three is sure to keep the pace and I can't wait to read it! 5 Stars.

GREAT SEQUEL....NOW I WANT # 3 By Kindle Customer The characters are well developed and easy to love and root for as they struggle with the evil all around them. The heroine is a typical teenager in so many ways it makes her endearing. She is confused about life and her true purpose as this second book takes us to the...."rebels" you could say.I hope the third book comes out soon, I definitely want more of this story.While a young Author, Ms. North has a wonderful writing style that is easy to read and her books are really well edited. She has created an interesting world full of evil with quests, intrigue, mystery, suspense, romance and lots of great action and adventure.KUDOS Ms. North on a tale well told!

I was easily pulled back into Ivy's world and happily led mercilessly through until this unearthly hour. And after waiting so long to get book two, I just want book THREE now! Icebound is impeccably written and enriches the reader's understanding of the world that was built in the first book while laying an intriguing scene for the next one. Ivy has grown as a person in more ways than one and I am looking forward to continuing her journey in book three!
