Wildly entertaining story with hilarious dialogue By Kitty Smith I found this to be a witty story that had me giggling out loud more than a few times. Jimmy is a sympathetic character, an agoraphobe who has retreated to the world of cinema but must now come out of hiding to save that which he loves. After learning that the Crypt is to be sold, demolished, and turned into 34 flats, Jimmy's world collapses. Suddenly he has a purpose, and as the story unfolds you're taken on a wildly entertaining ride as Jimmy enlists the help of a shady film buff named Mr. Granger to save the Crypt.The dialogue here is priceless, whether it's Jimmy and Oswald arguing over a game or Jimmy and Bannister arguing over the best part of "North by Northwest". It's rare I come across a book where the characters' banter is this clever without feeling scripted or forced, but "Celluloid" shines like a beacon when it comes to character interactions. The story is great, a David vs Goliath feel but contemporary and with much hilarity. A great read, one worth revisiting again.

Jimmy Clifford is like an older kid, something most common among the coveted 18-49 demographic. He owns a shop chock full of film memorabilia, and is supported by characters such as his best friend and a drug dealer who specializes in the hot drug du-jour.Jimmy is personally affected by the news of a condo to be built in place of his revered "Crypt" - said movie theatre. He takes it upon himself to stage a cabaret night to raise awareness of the situation, and to raise money to stop the takeover.What ensues is a hilarious story of pop culture, a certain coming of age, and a quest to find entertainment to make the cabaret a bonafide hit. His addictions is movies; old, new, actually all movies. his every day life is shattered when he discovers that The Crypt, a small Cinema will be closing down. This just will not do. This is his favorite hang-out. So he decides to take action.Jimmy with the help of his friends decide to do a benefit to save the Crypt, they plan on hosting a "Cabaret Night" featuring local talents. All Jimmy has to do is find seven acts, but he only has two months to pull it off.A very original story with quirky and likable characters. Jimmy is flawed, he is agoraphobic, on psychiatric medications and occasional street drugs. Despite his personal (mental health) issues he is still funny and likable. All of his friends have their own "quirks" but they too are likable.It is a challenge for Jinny to step out of his "comfort zone", but he will do what ever it takes to try to save the Crypt. Overall I found Celluloid quite entertaining, with many laugh out loud moments. I recommend to those who love a good comedy.* I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author Christie began this personal journey in 1976 when she was celebrating her first Passover meal with her new Jewish in laws. John's parents were German holocaust survivors and were disappointed that their only surviving son married a Gentile girl. As a Christian, Christie knew she would never fulfill her mother in law's wishes and become a Jew, so she decided she would try to win their love and favor by pretending to be interested in what they believed. When Jesus revealed Himself to her hidden in that first Jewish Passover meal, she was shocked. What was Jesus doing in this "Jewish thing"?!?! Then He told her, "All the holidays are about Me. Christianity is Jewish". So with a desire to intimately know Him in a personal relationship, she went on a 39 year journey of revelation, encountering Him in the Jewish feasts and experiencing the heart of her Jewish Bridegroom, King and Judge. Her main desire is more than giving out information to satisfy the intellect. Rather, it is to give an invitation of encounter so others can begin their journey of discovery about this Jewish man, His culture and His family. It is her desire for the Body of Christ to have an understanding of what Romans 11 says we have been grafted into. John and Christie have three children and four grandchildren who live in Nashville and Milwaukee and they take any spare time they have to go spend time with them.

If you have ever wondered what place the Jewish festivals have for us as Christians in our current time, this book will remind you how prophetic the Bible really is and how God has been revealing his plan to us through his "divine appointments" all along. Christie is able to carefully highlight scripture in a way that makes your heart stir with delight for our savior Jesus.This was one of the most impactful books I have read. It has completely changed my outlook on God's plan for us. I'm giving this 5 stars!

I can promise you this is much more than simply a new teaching or a bunch of knowledge for you to fill head with. Christie shares some of her most vulnerable times with God and pulls you into the story in such a way that you almost feel like your there. If you have ever been curious about the emotions of God or the grand love story we are a part of from Genesis through Revelation than i would say this is the book for you.

The author's insights are amazing. She leads you on a thirty-plus-year journey of discovery through personally celebrating the Jewish feasts. The patterns revealing Jesus are incredibly faith-building, but the best part is the way my heart was stirred by her personal experiences. I have read several books on God's feasts, but this one touched my heart like no other.

By JB This book is a true gift to school administrators, teachers, and for those of us who have the privilege and honor to be a part of a Christian school, Building Biblical Worldview: The Three Loves should be a staple in our library. For any Christian who values the process of education Joe gives practical but important reminders as to why teaching from a Biblical Worldview is important. The Three Loves is an important concept that allows the reader to remember the importance of loving God, loving our students, and loving what we do working daily serving the Lord. From a broad sense it speaks to the importance of the Calling we live out, while passionately dedicating our lives to others, and to the Lord. I utilized the book among faculty for devotions and key reminders. Thanks Joe, I look forward to reading more of your work.

The adventure tale is a delight from start to finish and is just as engrossing today as it was 125 years ago when it first appeared.

Roughing It tells the true-ish escapades of Twain in the American West. Although he clearly "speaks with forked tongue," Roughing It is informative as well as humorous. From stagecoach travel to the etiquette of prospecting, the modern reader gains considerable insight into that much-fictionalized time and place. Do you know about sagebrush, for example? Sage-brush is very fair fuel, but as a vegetable it is a distinguished failure. Nothing can abide the taste of it but the jackass and his illegitimate child, the mule. But their testimony to its nutritiousness is worth nothing, for they will eat pine knots, or anthracite coal, or brass filings, or lead pipe, or old bottles, or anything that comes handy, and then go off looking as grateful as if they had had oysters for dinner. Roughing It is informally structured around the narrator's attempts to strike it rich. He meets a motley, colorful crew in the process; many mishaps occur, and it shouldn't surprise you that Twain does not emerge a man of means. But he withstands it all in such a relentless good humor that his misfortune inspires laughter. Roughing It is wonderful entertainment and reminds you how funny the world can be--even its grimmer districts--when you're traveling with the right writer.

58 of 60 people found the following review helpful. A fun read, and some history too By Matthew Taylor The genius of Mark Twain is that his work is still enjoyable, and funny, to this day. This book, originally published in 1871, is Twain's account of his journey from Missouri to Hawaii (called the Sandwich Islands in his day). He tells story after story of his adventures along the way, starting with the stagecoach ride on the Overland Stage Line to Carson City, Nevada, around 1861, and then telling of his stay in Nevada, then California, then his visit to Hawaii. The stories are informative, humorous, and all-around entertaining. He lampoons everybody he can--nobody is safe--including miners, pioneers (emigrants), politicians, Mormons, Blacks, American Indians, Chinese, newspaper reporters, "desperados", even himself on more than one occasion. Sometimes his stories are so outrageous that you wonder how much is true and how much is embellishment, or just outright fiction. Even he understands this by telling the reader on occasion that he has not made up a particular story, to demonstrate that truth is often stranger than fiction, but also to imply that he has taken liberties in other places in the book. (I wonder if the Mormon Church has ever banned this book for the things he says about them.) Even while he is being irreverent, however, he often demonstrates a sensitivity toward people, with an awareness of the situation of others that seems to me to be ahead of his time. For example, he has a chapter on the immigrant Chinese population in the West, and while he pokes fun at them in some respects, he spends the time detailing their lives and culture, as much as he could understand it, with a respect that was uncommon in his day.I bought a copy of this book years ago because I am a native Californian, and knew that there was some material in here about California in the early days (my copy is an old hardcover published by Grosset and Dunlap). As Twain states in his Prefatory: "...There is quite a good deal of information in this book. I regret this very much, but really it could not be helped." I enjoyed reading about the "old West" from an eye-witness, although most of it deals with Nevada, not California. While some of it sounded familiar, like something from any Western-genre movie, other things were like nothing I had ever heard of before, describing the "Wild West" from an original point of view. In that respect, this book is a great resource.This book falls short of five stars due to some minor flaws. He often digresses with text that is not only marginal to the point, but not even written by him, reprinting someone else's text. I skipped over some of that. He would also spend pages detailing coversations between other people that he could not have possibly remembered verbatim. While I understand that it was a common writing style of his day, it sounds like bad jounalism today. Those complaints aside, this is some great writing by Twain and some valuable American history.

It is an excellent value. The 200 pages of "Explanatory Notes" at the end, add greatly to the modern reader's understanding of the 1860's "Wild West". The Early Western Mining Frontier comes vividly and colorfully to life, thanks to the Explanatory Notes' full illumination of the fascinating, often hilarious, eyewitness account of young Sam Clemens.The 21st century reader now sees the momentous impact of Samuel Colt's "Navy Revolver" on frontier society, fully comprehends a "Stamp Mill's" importance to the silver mines of the Comstock Lode, and is in complete agreement about the "thoroughbrace's" necessity to the Overland Stage traveler's comfort! This edition also contains all 304 first edition illustrations, another great aid allowing the modern reader to take a virtual walk into a vanished time.In the "Foreword" to this edition, Editor Harriet Elinor Smith notes, " The vernacular style of ROUGHING IT often seems surprisingly fresh to modern readers.....". I'm betting that many readers, younger ones especially, may approach this book with dread, only to become immersed in the rollicking adventure, and reach the end of ROUGHING IT with regret. The readers who return for a second, third or more reading, will discover many levels of depth to ROUGHING IT that will continue to entertain and educate reading after reading, year after year.From the "Foreword" to this edition, Editor Smith also observes, "Although readers have long been entertained by ROUGHING IT, it has gradually become part of all serious study of American culture. He spins his tales, weaves his lies, and draws us in with the skill of a magician. Dividing fact from fiction is not always easy in a work such as this. "Roughing It" has moments of obvious hyperbole, grounded by stories of true difficulty. Yet throughout, Twain finds a way to make us smile, even laugh out loud. We are amused by the eccentric characters and turns of events which he describe, and find that we are not so far different as we might like to think.The story follows Twain's journey as he travels west by stagecoach, train, wagon, horse, and ship. He meets surly frontiersmen, murderers, thieves, fortune-hunters, and men of ill-repute. Even here, he finds the good beneath the dirt. I especially enjoyed his anecdote of Scotty Briggs, a man trying to hire a minister to attend over his friend's funeral. Hilarious stuff! And so true to human nature.Throughout his account, Twain makes a habit of degrading his own work ethic, nudging us in the ribs as he highlights his aversion to labor. With this in mind, the title seems to be a tongue-in-cheek affair. In fact, I found his accounts much less rustic and more modern than expected. Sure, we can travel across the U.S. quicker these days, but the politics and economics of Twain's age parallel our own. Will we never learn? Isn't this the point of history, to avoid repeating our errors?Although criticized in his day for using coarse language and a working-class, Twain held to his guns and gave us some magnificent humor with which to swallow his pointed barbs. He was a master satirist, and even in a travelogue such as this, his views shine through. And thank goodness! A century and a half later, I'm thankful for his insights.

A lot of fun to read By Matthew Riggio The book is a lot of fun to read and found myself laughing at loud in some parts, especially in the first and third acts. The characters, comedy, and the way the plot unfolds remind me of the comedy found in some Coen Brothers movies such as Raising Arizona and Big Lebowski. It definitely has absurd humor and it's a lot of fun! The author also sticks with that tone; he does not attempt to dump surprises in readers' laps by suddenly trying to be too serious (or vice versa)...he creates his world and sticks with it, which makes the third act rewarding and funny!

This is the time where you need to question yourself on what could possibly be happening in your life to where you are are considering tendering hard-saved money and sacrificing your immensely valuable, and surely irretrievable, time on a self-published farce of a novel?Whatever strange circumstance could have brought you to this sparsely trodden tributary of the narratives of the ages, take comfort in knowing you are not alone, and that your hope for the salvation of entertainment is not in vain.The voice of the book is written in a cross between a complete imbecile buffoon, and a status-conscious, neurotic, opportunist.The complexities of how to interpret this book are actually endless, and that is part of the game you are invited to play with the author.Buying this book is like hanging out with your older, smarter, ironically arrogant brother that you never had, and seldom wanted.This book, once properly understood, has the capacity to characterize at least an entire era in humanity's degradation from civilization and high culture to decadence and camp. Its incessant focus centers on social status, lack of hygiene, the dog-eat-dog, hypocritical, law of the jungle kind of world we live in. The participants break down into those who accede to the Machiavellian reality of the hypocritical religio-corporate complex, and those who decide to adopt a loftier, albeit false, perspective on meaning and guidance for their lives - known by advertisers as a "Brand Identity".Misery is about the paradox of our time, particularly that of brand identity. We espouse intellectual notions of idealism, and make a pretense to class and style, yet, there is always beneath lurking the base, animal part of us...as well as the far more fearsome part of us, the transparently opportunistic, and, willfully conformist, routinized cog in the religio-corporate mega complex.The book deals with very heavy issues. Prejudice towards Gypsies is extended towards an absurd hyperbolic degree that the reader can only come away with a feeling that he has not dedicated enough time personally to advancing the cause of the Roma people.The beginning of the book is the best, where you are exposed to the pure blank slate of lexiconal humor in it's raw state. Eugene is a master of using words and phrases that are simply funny, especially when juxtaposed. A common ploy is to juxtapose a high-minded plea of grandiosity with a brutally honest (yet obvious), unnecessary, banal, and repetitive, crude remark. The voice itself also leads to writing that you aren't used to reading. Using a combination of complex structures, old-fashioned words and phrases, as well as the occasional addressing of the reader, for reasons of like, you know, humorous effect...Eugene will guide you through your daily commute with aplomb.The reader will think of how fun it would be to write his own satirical novel using world-play to the level of a respectable rap battle. If this was a comic strip, it would be the Lockhorns. Completely bereft of any genuine positive sentiment. Pure social commentary in it's highest form about the compromises we make with ourselves, our ideology, in our shameless pursuit of Triumph. Misery is about what happens when we create something that gets out of our control.Any reader will be interested to know what Eugene might have been holding back in this debut. The fact that I didn't see the connections of Misery's protagonist and Ayn Rand's life and works until just this instant is actually pretty embarrassing, but, the connection is crystal clear. I didn't figure this out because I am an expert on Rand, but, because I remembered that Eug is a huge fan of that, and I have a basic outline of her movement. Ironically, the work, so understood, is properly one of the most bullet-proof, hermetically sealed arguments to categorically refute Randianism in all its forms.How such an anti-Randian work could have been created by an avowed disciple of Ms. Rand herself is beyond my comprehension. It may be that the author has many conflicting views that are being worked out in this piece. He also could be simply double-dealing, playing both sides of the coin, living a double life as a serious writer and thinker, and secretly pursuing his shadow persona's desire to refute the intellectual manifolds he has been operating within. Under this interpretation, this book represents a departure of Eugene Slaven, the idealistic thinker, and, the introduction of a newer, more complex, intuitive, post-rational interpretation or processing of issues. Eugene's repeated nods to nihilism won't go unnoticed by the serious reader, and, they will be hilarious to the casual reader.When understood with the access to his other writings on political theory and society, this book, although humorous, becomes anything but a joke. His rabidly critical stance toward modernity, and the atomization of the individual, to the point where they seek salvation through intoxication will please many fellow misanthropes.Understood as a sociological treatise, this book is decidedly pessimistic towards humanity's institutions and authentic culture. There is no debating that point.Yet, when understood as a motivational how-to book on how to achieve success in life beyond your wildest dreams, then, it's probably invaluable to the right audience. It really all comes down to how you feel about the religio-corporate mega complex.Ultimately, this work is about authority, and the authenticity that comes with it. Whether it's about having the right lineage of apprenticeship, or, codifying one's own tenets to coherently assimilate followers, this book comes down to playing power politics. The plot spindles out of control as the fabric woven by the haphazard interplay of the fate-bound characters. Somehow the book manages to explore timeless constants of human nature, alongside the recurring homage to a current debate. For instance, the role of aggression and rage, especially as an instrument to wisdom and creativity cannot be dismissed as mere humor. Our author is too erudite a scholar to waste the very sap of wisdom on something merely funny. I feel that this is essentially a masculinist archetype, known in the past as chivalrous, chauvinist or even 'toxic-masculinity'. It should be clear to the reader that this is the idea that we have a vestige of primal urges and prerogatives that have nothing to do with civilized man. The primal, and, also the tribal aspects of humanities development find rich exploration in this work functions an obvious allegory for the history of mankind, going though stages of primal, hunter, tribal, civilization, and degradation and dissolution. The constant pugnacity of all characters along with the emphasis on organizational behavior can't help but re-iterate the healthy message of manning up and starting your own ideological movement. In the world of Misery,capitalism's combination of efficiency and waste result in a situation where ironic Brand appeal becomes a dominant market mechanism. This book is like having an actual coach in building your own intentional movement, intentional community, or cult brand.The work also includes short stories written by the main character as part of the plot. What a great imaginative device to showcase ridiculous anecdotes and expose the reader into the creative process of the writer. The reader will undoubtedly question how the creative process needed to intensify for the short stories - needing to be that much more dense in their presentation. It is also interesting how the ability to create the short stories can only come from a period of isolation, which, was kind of downplayed towards the end of the book, and was never really a big selling point of Misery to the disciples outside of the inner circle. So, it's pretty messed up that you have to go into isolation to join the inner circle, but, that's just basically how it is.One eerily convincing passage reads:"Marcus is a dark soul. To write that kind of prose, one has to be removed from society. Were he to appear and immerse himself in human interaction, the talent for that type of writing would be instantly vitiated."With this emphasis on the creative powers of isolation, Slaven is truly speaking to a forsaken generation and it's only hope for salvation through stoically-induced, controlled folly.The true theme of this book is about cultural appropriation. For instance, the whole craft beer, and craft spirit phenomenon as a way people to carefully craft an authentic extension of themselves through brand identification. Maybe the beer labels and bazooka joe comics are all about the youth culture. The Madison Ave. culture of now. It's a cosmic quest for the perfect cocktail story, the perfect ice-breaker, that hints at what it might be like to individuate using brand loyalty to craft beers to express the part of our identity that wasn't possible without an ironically-labelled intoxicant.

In addition to being genuinely funny, it is also sprinkled throughout with subtle social commentary and philosophical musings. Highly recommended for fans of The Ginger Man and/or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Reading this book changed my life, as I'm sure it will change yours. If Slaven starts a cult I will be its first initiate. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. You won't regret it.

April 18, 2014, was the deadliest day in the history of Mount Everest.

Standing on the border between Nepal and China, this mammoth mountain rises more than 29,000 feet—nearly five and a half miles—into the sky. It is the highest point on earth. More than four thousand people have reached the top of Everest. Hundreds more have died trying.

Early that morning in 2014, around fifty men were on the mountain. Suddenly, a block of ice the size of a house broke off a cliff. It cracked into truck-size pieces. The ice chunks tumbled down the mountainside, instantly killing those in its path. For days, people dug in the snow and ice, hoping to find survivors. But in the end, sixteen men lost their lives.

I'd say the author is a smart woman and I enjoyed the science notes woven into the story. Reading this book left a wonderful feeling of the timelessness of the female adventure spirit and the challenges put upon that spirit throughout history. I highly recommend this book.
