Great YA reality with a creative splash of fantasy By Chris Aldrich This is a well-paced young adult novel that mixes a dose of interesting fantasy in an otherwise all-too-real teenage world. In the vein of classics like Dracula and Frankenstein that take adolescence and turn them into great fiction as well as well-veiled morality plays, this novel, with a much better and modernized version of the "Teen Wolf" plot or perhaps in the vein of "X-Men: The Teenage Years", takes things up three notches by adding a dose of thriller/suspense in what portends to be an awesome four book series.Typical teenage protagonist Kayleigh comes home one day to find her father bleeding and injured in an apparent home invasion that ultimate reveals her mother has been either kidnapped or killed. Struggling with the psychological fallout of losing her mother under more than suspicious circumstances, she faces the turmoils of puberty, relationships, and fitting in as a teenager in high school. Making things worse, she discovers, that like her mother, she's a "Morph" with the ability to change her appearance into almost anyone she can imagine to even animals. Facing post traumatic stress disorder amidst teenagerdom, her new-found ability just compounds things and gives her some hope that her mother may not only be alive but that she may be able to find her -- if she can withstand constant bullying from classmate Emma and a very mysterious and potentially threatening online stalker who seems to know her every move.I can't wait to see the next installment in November 2015.

I enjoyed it so much, I passed it along to my 12 year old son. The storyline is compelling, and the topics are easily relatable to preteens, especially girls. I happened upon this book through a friend's recommendation, and I really enjoyed it. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Aaaahhh…. Well, I guess I can begin by mentioning what drew me to pick this book – It’s super adorable book cover. And the cute factor doesn’t stop there.. There is something so cute (Yes, yes, I know I have overused the word) and quaint about the entire story; the world, people and setup. Irish folklore, characters with diverse backgrounds, fairy tales, mysterious antique jewellery, secret notes and lot more. There is such a picturesque, and an almost Disney-like magical feel to the entire narration. I think part of it is because of the main “superpower capabilities” featuring in this book: morphing. It looks like it is unrestrained with near-limitless possibilities – people can change into pretty much anything (and anyone) tangible. So it is a lot of fun reading about ..say.. someone changing from an old man, into a crane and then a panda all in the span of a few minutes. The story is paced pretty well, covering an entire term at high school, and I never felt lost with respect to where we are in terms of the passing of time from the first page, because we are taken through the descriptions of seasons changing from winter to spring and the festivities of Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s day. This school year is particularly tumultuous for Kayleigh – it has been two years since her mom went missing, and she feels like she needs her now more than ever, what with her facing bullying at school, going through puberty, and suffering from a really low self-esteem because of which she is not able to stand up for herself or be confident around the guy she has a crush on. To be honest, I wasn’t totally convinced about the whole bullying theme in the book, maybe because I couldn’t really understand why she got cowed down so quickly. Because from what I saw, it was Kayleigh who had a larger circle of friends than the “mean girl” who just had two girls tagging along with her. As I read along, I think I slowly got where Kayleigh’s anxieties and fragility stemmed from. There was a point in the book where she breaks down because all the events of the past couple of years – beginning with her mom’s disappearance, to recent strange discoveries about her mom’s past, cyber bullying, the typical high school stress related to grades, friends and dating, physical changes to her body due to puberty and morphing – take a toll on her.My favorite moment in the book is a conversation between Kayleigh and her friend. I can’t discuss it much because it is a major spoiler, but I will say that it was a mix of sad, profound and ironical. I just found it so fitting and “right” that the “limitations” of morphing was addressed so succinctly. You need to identify and get comfortable with your core self before trying to perfect morphing. And sometimes the cards life deals you feels so unfair, and no amount of morphing can completely heal or change that. The book is strewn with some red herrings, so I had fun guessing. I got a few right, and was totally off the mark with some others. I thought this was a really good start to the series with so many things left to discover in the next book. The only thing I am a bit sceptical about is how the whole “international secret evil organization” is going to play out. There are times I feel the whole scope and premise of that track is so… vast, that I wonder whether the rest of the story will be able to gracefully handle the weight of it. So I am curious to see how that turns out.Note : I received an e-copy of this book from xpressobooktours in exchange for an honest review.(Originally posted on bookmyopia/wordpress)

Old Heart: A Novel, by Peter Ferry

Review Winner of a 2015 Novel of the Year award from the Chicago Writers AssociationOld Heart mingles a bit of suspense with precise, unsparing reflection on personal histories against a backdrop of difficult events. In this the novel might be compared to Wallace Stegner’s Crossing to Safety or Colm Tóibín’s The Master, and it is nearly as well written. It should appeal to readers of any age and might make a good gift for a friend in doubt about the possibilities for renewal late in life. — The Chicago Book Review"This is a novel of love and of loss and of self-determination. Old Heart moves through time and grabs your interest on every page and will stay with you for keeps." — Chicago Tribune"A life-affirming novel about love and second chances" — Publishers Weekly"Old Heart manages to weave together an astonishing array of themes and layers—the perils and freedoms of old age, the complexity of family ties, the liberation of travel, and finally, Ferry presents and proves the bold and needed idea that it's never too late to re-open the past to recast the present." — DAVE EGGERS"Peter Ferry’s writing is wry and beautiful, and this exuberant novel shows how a man driven by love can add a surprising extra chapter to his life." — ELIZABETH MCKENZIE"An important meditation on mortality and an honest, unsentimental celebration of the power of love, Old Heart has the feel of an instant literary classic." — Don De Grazia

About the Author Peter Ferry is a Chicago area teacher, editor and writer; he is the author of the 2008 novel Travel Writing. By Sheralyn Campbell I tried to take my time reading this book because the writing itself is so beautiful. This is an honest look at life, what happens to dreams and hopes, the stories we tell ourselves....while the years unfold. This story pulls no punches; it is a square,, dead-on look look at some hard facts: despite our intentions, marriages falter, children disappoint, we lose people we cherish, and always, things do not turn out the way we thought they would. Yet, we persist: we grow older and struggle to remain relevant, independent - we want our presence to be valued. We want to be authentic. We want to love and be loved. Our protagonist Tom Johnson is committed to doing all of that - despite his age and various limitations. It is the combination of his drive, his wisdom and self examination that we fall in love with and cheer for. OLD HEART is a fabulous book club selection. And, I can't help but think what a beautiful movie it will make.

A real page turner, exploring some of the most important issues that occur in families. If you are older yourself or have an older parent, it will really make you think about your relationships and what is important to you. It is also just a great story, with lots of interwoven themes, making it completely engrossing. It is well written and a lot of fun to read. I couldn't put it down. Finished it in 24 hours.

The story, while simply told, is complex. As I read, I often remembered the stories of my parents and I wondered how my children and I will relate during my last years of life. It is a realistic portrayal of life, yet inspirational. It a truth that old people still have dreams and wish to live with dignity. I simply could not stop reading the story. Yet, when the story ended, I felt complete.

Brilliantly executed and endlessly funny, this pause-resistant debut showcases one of the most winning, irrepressible voices since Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones.

I'm getting married.

He's perfect!

It's a disaster.

Meet Lily Wilder - New Yorker, lawyer, and bride-to-be. She has a dream job, great friends, a family full of charismatic and loving women, and a total catch of a fiancé.

Also? She has no business getting married.

Lily's fiancé, Will, is a brilliant, handsome archaeologist. Lily is sassy, impulsive, fond of a good drink (or five), and completely incapable of being faithful to just one man. Lily likes Will, but does she love him? Will loves Lily, but does he really know her? As the wedding approaches, Lily's nights - and mornings, and afternoons - of booze, laughter, and questionable decisions become a growing reminder that the happiest day of her life might turn out to be her worst mistake yet.

Bridget Jones's Diary meets Where'd You Go, Bernadette in this joyous and ribald debut, introducing a self-assured protagonist whose choices raise fresh questions about gender, politics, monogamy, and the true meaning of fidelity.

I Liked The Book Okay, But Never Really Laughed or Connected With The Characters By Robin The story covers Lily's antics, including her sexual romps, in the week prior to her wedding to Will. I wanted to find humor in the book so bad, but I never did find it funny or laugh at all. Perhaps it's because it's pretty crass at times (like the old people and restrooms bit) or because I've been around people like Lily and it grows tiresome with the constant superficial quips, potty mouth, drinking, sexual conquests, etc. But even though not my taste, I can imagine some people will enjoy this book and find it funny, entertaining and sexy at times.I think the pace of the book was off for me. The first half was slow and repetitive. Lily is an open book and her quips and escapades are like a broken record-we quickly learn that she's a newbie lawyer who loves to drink, party and have sex and is nonchalant about being repeatedly unfaithful to her fiance even the week before her wedding. They've only been together 6 months and family and friends vocalize worry that the marriage is doomed because Will doesn't know enough about Lily's past antics and her still ongoing infidelities. She hasn't been honest with Will about her ongoing sexual exploits. But her main concern is really whether she wants to marry him. I got tired of Lily in the first half of the book. Will is almost nonexistent, and so I had no affinity for his character and didn't care if they got married or not. I guess I just got bored and wanted to stop reading about her conquests, and I also didn't find her fraud litigation case and law career that interesting (though there's not a lot about it).I did finish the book, and I'm glad I did because the second half picked up the pace and was much more interesting. We learn more about Will, Lily's court case gets a little more interesting and the characters themselves connect more and become more reflective as the wedding date draws closer. Plus, there's a surprising twist. Will they marry or not? I'm not telling! I ended up liking the book okay, but it was not a page turner for me until close to the end when I finally felt interested to see how it would play out. I think whether or not someone enjoys the book or finds it funny could be colored by one's own views of marriage, sex and infidelity. For me, I mostly think the pace of the book was off and the beginning half was too flippant and shallow to get interested in early enough to get invested in the story -- but maybe younger adults in the process of defining what they want out of intimate relationships, what their own sexual boundaries are and what it means to the individual to be in a committed relationship would enjoy it more. I just didn't feel like I was involved in Lily's journey until late in the book, and I just liked the book okay.

21 of 23 people found the following review helpful. problematic and not for everyone - but I laughed and laughed By RobynJC I Take You is the story of Lily Wilder, a funny, sharp attorney who's getting married in six days to Will. Will is perfect: an archaeologist who inspires comparisons to Indiana Jones with his geek-cute style, given to quoting Epictetus at her, and happily bantering with her crazy set of in-laws (her father is a serial marrier, so Lily's got not just a mom, but a whole batch of step mothers and a kooky grandma as well). There's just one problem: Will is kind of... boring. And that brings up another problem...Lily can't stop sleeping with other men. Men she picks up in bars, men who are part of the wedding party....all men.As the day of her wedding approaches, Lily and the entire bridal party descend upon Key West, the locale of Lily's childhood, the place she fled when she was 14 and has never returned. As Lily careens towards the wedding she finds herself juggling multiple one night stands, an unraveling deposition for a huge case, loving family members who want her to call the whole thing off (see: one night stands), and a mother in law who is willing to stoop to blackmail to make sure that Lily doesn't follow through with the wedding. This is both a delightful book and a problematic one. On the delightful side: it is funny. I laughed, and laughed. Lily has a sharp wit, and the writer has a natural, easy way of translating that to the page. So many of the characters are so well drawn; there is a huge cast of interesting female characters, from the mom and two step-moms (a home renovator, Congresswoman, and society doyenne), the recently retired legal eagle grandma, the loving lesbian best friend, and the barracuda States' Attorney mother in law. Plus, there is a twist with Will, the perfect Indiana Jones fiancee, that I didn't see coming.But. It's problematic. Lily's behavior, throughout the week, is SO unlikable, and so cruel in some cases, that it becomes hard to root for her. She does sleep with lots of men - from random strangers she meets in bars, to, yes, good friends of her fiancee's. (This isn't a spoiler, because bizarrely, it's presented as not such a big deal.) She is horribly cruel and nasty to her in-laws when she meets them, hoping on some level to sabotage the engagement. Obviously, Lily is ambivalent about getting married, but the way she deals with it is so awful, that it becomes hard to like her - just because she's funny? The book also tries to make some moral points, but the morality was muddled. There was a lot about sexual freedom, and the double standards applied to men and women with regard to sex. This is hardly a new idea - Samantha from Sex and the City started this debate decades ago. But Samantha wasn't sleeping with her fiancee's best friend two days before the wedding. I personally don't judge Lily for having lots of sex with strangers; I judge her for doing it three days before her wedding, behind her fiancee's back, with his friends. (And a note to those who might be more conservative - this is pretty graphic sex.) And okay, if Lily doesn't want to get married, and finds monogamy and marriage stifling, also fine, but here's a hint: don't get married! It was so hard to figure out why she wanted to get married, and hard to be on her side when she's getting wasted and lashing out at her husband's in laws. Ms. Kennedy obviously had some agenda items in terms of morality, monogamy, marriage, etc. - but after a while, it felt like I was getting lectured at by a drunk (Lily, not the author) who didn't have a leg to stand on. And the ending tried to turn all that on its head, trying to build a "happy ending" out of a very fractured scenario. So - maybe four stars is a bit high? But I read it quickly, the humor was spot on, the characters were fantastic and funny, and this is a first author. So I'm going to give it a generous notch up, in honor of those admirable traits. Definitely read it for the funny, and hope that next time, perhaps, the author can resolve some of the fractured moralizing and find a story a bit more worth of her fantastic natural skills.

I loved the cover, and thought the premise - a young woman who was sure that she wanted lots and lots of sex but was unsure that she wanted lots and lots of sex with only one man after they said "I do" was promising. I love strong female characters and I enjoy funny, witty romps into the realm of chick-lit, but I can't say I liked this book. What it did right - there were some humorous scenes particularly when Lily (the main character) is on her worst behavior while sightseeing, meeting her soon to be in-laws or in the courtroom. I also liked Lily's father and her best friend, and even some of her conquests, particularly Ian. There were a lot of moments where I chose to keep reading because I was very interested in the satellite characters and I wish the book had more of them. What it did wrong - this was Becky Bloomwood all over again. When I first started reading the Shopaholic novels by Sophie Kinsella I wanted to root for Becky and I wanted to be fine with the fact that although the character was a complete ditz and seemingly screwed up everything in her life because of her inability to balance her checkbook and be a functioning adult, her charm and pluck got her out of every tight spot. As the series wore on, I started to dislike Becky more and more. I found her ridiculous, childish and often completely infuriating. The fact that Becky always wound up smelling like roses was grating by the third book, and by the last book sickening. It only took one book for me to completely dislike Lily. I never rooted for her, and every time I thought she would see consequences to her actions (not her sexual actions mind you, but her complete disregard for the feelings of other characters and her inexplicable disrespect for her profession) she came out on top. I don't think it's cute or empowering to hear a character describe herself as a slut or bear no accountability for her actions. I felt cheated that the only self discovery that led to any action on her part was reversed bu the end of the book. The sex is plentiful and relatively hot although I was curious as to how many more times I was going to have to hear "slid a finger inside me" which is as un-sexy a phrase as any and used as often as "my inner goddess" was in the Fifty Shades books. My theory is that Lily sleeps with countless men because it feels pretty good even though none of them are able to locate her clitoris. I found it baffling how that crucial bit of the female anatomy was left out of every sex scene.I knew this book was hitting the shelves yesterday (May 5th), so I faithfully read the ARC copy I received from the publisher so I could review it. Sadly, I can't recommend it.

By Blanca Mendez Difficult people are alway there , the matter how to deal with them… and the goal to be in positive flow no matter how negative is somebody and not to become difficult being with such negative people. I do feel the necessity of some advice as not comfortable sometimes and do mistakes dealing with that type of people. I find both books to be a good support in learning how to cope with the negativity from certain type of people. The helpful detailed guidance is provided, I've leant alot from both book, glad to have them as my helper in my personal training. It could benefit to many, balanced relations are alway better no matter what kind of people are around. Good offer, nice set on how to deal and not not to become difficult while dealing with all that.

It's liberating to know that somehow you are a difficult person too. You can't really point a finger to someone else unless you recognize and remove your own blind spot. This book just helped me recognized my own faults.

Miss Hazeltine's Home for Shy and Fearful Cats, by Alicia Potter

Review Will Miss Hazeltine be able to help the most shy and fearful kitty of them all? -- Parent Talk Parent Talk This delightful book tells a tale of fears overcome but the real pleasure is in the detail as Potter's words and Brigitta Sif's illustrations combine to ensure every re-reading has the potential for new discoveries. -- Absolutely Dulwich Absolutely Dulwich A quirky charm exudes from every spread: the sight of Miss H as yoga teacher is priceless and the forest scenes (with and without cats) have a real magical feel about them. -- Red Reading Hub Red Reading Hub The illustrations are a tremendous treat. The gothic theme includes all the details in Miss Hazeltine's cosy cottage and the woods around it, her pointed hat, her too-large feet, and the huge eyes of all the cats. -- Books for Keeps Books for Keeps A heart-warming book [...] I felt the message was strong -- Juno Juno It is a really funny book and I give it 10 stars. -- Flo (age 6) Anorak ...amusing and beautifully illustrated. -- Your Cat Magazine Your Cat Magazine The strength of this book lies in Sif's absorbing illustrations. Miss Hazeltine is brought to life as a warm, spirited and nimble character, a contrast to the withdrawn, crouching nature of the many scaredy cats in her care [...] This is a worthy story about patience, courage and wholehearted acceptance of the unique character of each individual. Inis Reading Guide This is a magically illustrated picture book with detailed drawings affording plenty of opportunities to talk and share with young readers [...] The language is simple and understated and as a result the message remains clear - that kindness and friendship can triumph! The School Librarian

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A guide for overcoming fears By Janet Hamilton Summary: As the title suggest, Miss Hazeltine has opened a home for shy and fearful cats, and it’s very popular with pet owners. Their cats have all kinds of issues from a fear of mice to an inability to pounce, but the one that is scared of everything is Crumb. He refuses to participate in Bird Basics, Scary Noises, Meeting New Friends, or any of the other trainings Miss Hazeltine offers. That’s okay with her. She lets him just sit and watch, and he proves to be a good observer. One afternoon, when the other cats are sleeping, she goes out for more milk and doesn’t come back. It’s Crumb who knows just what to do and leads the other cats on a rescue mission. He alone knows what scares Miss Hazeltine and how to help her overcome her fears and find her way back home. Upon their return, the cats change the sign on the house to Miss Hazeltine’s Home for Shy and Pretty Brave If You Ask Us Cats.Pros: Miss Hazeltine’s approach, to allow her cats to proceed at their own pace in overcoming their fears, seems like a very comforting one to cats or children. Kids will enjoy the cartoonish illustrations and relate to the cats’ difficulties.Cons: The cats are a little too bug-eyed to be cute in the classic cat sense.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful and Quirky By Laura L. Harrison Spectacular. Detailed, whimsical illustrations and a great story will have children entranced. My new favorite title for 2015.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Pitch Perfect Poignant Read By Customer As a fan of Alicia Potter's work, I was anxious to read her latest picture book offering: Miss Hazeltine's Home for Shy and Fearful Cats. The pacing is perfect, and with humor and heart, the reader follows Crumbs and the other cats as Miss Hazeltine offers gentle encouragement. When Miss Hazeltine goes missing (falling on her way back with buckets of milk for her growing brood) the touching low point--of no lesson having been given on what to do when your human goes missing--is poignant. The end, both visually and textually, is pitch perfect. A wonderful read for scaredy cats and for those who already consider themselves brave.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Angry Birds are back for more graphic novel fun By Wayne A McCoy The Angry Birds are back for more fun in 'Angry Birds Comics, Vol. 2: When Pigs Fly.' It's about as fun as the first one, and definitely good for younger readers who are fans of the game. This time around, there are mysterious green eggs, pigs on stilts, and of course, the titles flying pigs. The birds try out alternate nest materials (like stone or water) with some dismal results. There are weird shells, strange berry juice, and a broken sling shot. The pigs try to steal the eggs, and the birds always manage to stay one step ahead of them. It's cartoony violence like the game is. The pigs are pretty dim, and the birds are pretty silly. It's got a slapstick style found in cartoons, and the colors are bright. Once again, the bottom of the pages seem to have some sort of flip cartoon, but since I'm reviewing a digital copy, I can't make the pages flip fast enough. If you're buying a copy for kids, they might have more fun with a paper version so they can flip the pages and watch the birds fly into the pigs.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this fun graphic novel.
