“My take on life is this: stand up for yourself, be courageous and loyal to those you love, and never pass up a chance to consume good human food. I want the world to know that I AM DACHSHUND—the guardian, the sentinel, the keeper of everything my family holds dear!” My all-out favorite human by far is my Papa Duke, and wow, can he tell some stories! The “Alligator Story” and the “Haystack Story” from his Army days are new tales I heard him tell our family. How he’s managed to live through such exciting experiences is amazing—in fact, I think somebody ought to make a movie about him! I got to visit Sellars and Renata on their farm in Georgia with Grandma and Papa. Boy, did I have a couple of close calls. For example, my meet-up with mama pig Tenderloin made me scoot out of her pen FAST! Along with that, their farm dog Bubba took his job way too seriously, wasting a lot of time herding their four dinky cows around the field instead of playing with me. How rude! I’ve also learned more about cats (like, who would want to know more about them, right?) when I stayed with Uncle Kurt, Aunt Bethany, and their conniving Tate and Joey for a week. That turned out to be my feline boot camp, so I’m “letting the cat out of the bag” (no pun intended) by revealing how cats REALLY act when humans aren’t around! Another heartwarming tale of family, joy, good food, and unconditional love, Sarge’s story will bring warmth and smiles to readers of all ages.

Charity Eleanor Sintz likes girls better than boys but this is the least of her problems. The year is 1972, Tricky Dick is in the White House, and four-year-old Charity has managed to offend the better part of Roosevelt County, Indiana, by not crying at her mother’s funeral. Charity learns at a young age that with rare and wonderful exceptions, people in books are usually safer and more interesting than the people in front of her and that trees are more reliable than humans; sometimes Charity feels trapped in the wrong species. Left to her own devices, she grows into a random weed that can’t find a squat in the garden. But if the entire world is outside the garden, maybe it's not all bad.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Like the ones in Grandma East's yard By william mccartyguenza " There was a hedge tree in the O'Bryans' side yard. Like the ones in Grandma East's yard, it always dropped the useless apples and thorn-tipped branches on the ground that had to be cleared away. The tree stretched up and out well enough for a room-sized tree house that Grandpa had built for Una from cedar wood. Una no longer used the tree-house and reluctantly granted me access in exchange for a promise not to smoke inside. I enjoyed climbing up there to lie on the floor and inhale the cedar as I pretended to be someone else, someone smarter, prettier, and blessed with unconstrained talent for song, dance and stage ". This beautifully descriptive passage occurs in the middle of this book that tells of the life of Charity Sintz from very early childhood to young adulthood. I found myself constantly cheering for Charity as she somehow kept persevering with strength and candid honesty against seemingly impossible odds and I literally could not put the book down. I loved this first novel written by Ms.Merrell and I hope to see more from her.

Jane, a disillusioned art teacher who has been dumped by her obnoxious partner now lives at a private girls' boarding school near Queenstown, New Zealand. Her life is made brighter by the reappearance of an old art school friend who she had modelled for in their final painting examination. Through Justin she is introduced to the world of the unconventional and wealthy Mark. Jane's life really changes though when her eccentric aunt Claudia decides she wants to die in her home on a remote southern island rather than end her days in a rest home on the mainland. Jane agrees to accompany her aunt and their arrival proves to be dangerously inconvenient to people who have their own reason for wanting Claudia's house empty. Signed on the bottom is a humorous romantic mystery with dark undertones. Jane finds herself juggling three hot men and environmental issues while dealing with her own doubts and fears. This is a stand alone novel.

Set in the stunning South Island scenery of New Zealand, ‘Signed on the Bottom’ combines suspense and romance with humor and unexpected twists in the plot. The heroine, Jane Cooper is funny and likeable. Supporting characters really come to life: Claudia, the eccentric aunt who lived life on her own terms, Val and Val’s Mum, and, straight from my fantasies, Maddy the ‘casserole fairy’ who always shows up bearing food so you don’t have to cook dinner.Jane is a modern heroine who reacts to the multiple gorgeous men who cross her path in a modern way. After a recent failed relationship she may not be quite ready for Mr. Right, but is definitely interested in Mr. Fun-for-the moment-with-future-potential. The first chapter opens with a passage from a fictitious torrid romance, ‘My Boss, My Beloved’. This ‘book within the book’ is pops up in quotations and references throughout the plot and proves its worth in the finale. The main storyline is interspersed with vignettes which give the reader an insight into contemporary New Zealand life and culture. There are some lovely scenes describing the settings in Queenstown and Stewart Island. If you have visited New Zealand, you will appreciate the descriptions of flora and fauna in southern New Zealand, if not you may be inspired to go there and see it for yourself. The synopsis says this is a stand-alone novel, but hopefully we will hear more about Ms. Cooper in books to come. Chick lit at its light-hearted best.

Written by Greenwood in the words of "God Bless The U.S.A.," and fully illustrated with colorful, vibrant images by Amanda Sekulow, Proud To Be An American follows a man and his grandson across the U.S. to various national landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge, Arlington Cemetery and more. Proud to Be An American, by Lee Greenwood

About the Author Lee Greenwood knows first-hand what it’s like to have loved ones fighting for the freedom of all Americans, as his father served in the Navy and the Merchant Marine in World War II. Still, “God Bless the USA” went far beyond what Greenwood expected when he wrote it in the back of his tour bus in 1983. “God Bless the USA” has since been voted the most recognizable patriotic song in America. It is the only song to have been in the top five on the country singles charts three times (1991, 2001, and 2003). It was also #1 on the pop charts after 9/11/01.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Finally, a children's book on patriotism! By Alex Gregory I'm quite confident most parents and grandparents in the U.S. wonder how they can even begin to instill the concepts of patriotism and national pride in their kids and grandkids. In light of the many negative opinions about the U.S.A. in the media, it's no wonder that many young (and old) citizens do not realize how proud they can and should be of this great country. Thank you Lee Greenwood and Amanda Sekulow for rising to the occasion and for making this wonderful and beautifully illustrated children's book available to us ... and at such an affordable price. As I read the book, one thing that immediately struck me was how well it illustrates (as do the lyrics), the diversity of our country (farms, lakes, mountains, the two seacoasts) as well as the diversity of our citizens. I will ensure that my grandkids and the kids and grandkids of all my relatives (and I have a lot) receive one of these books. I even have a stash of them on my desk at work to stimulate discussions with guests to my office. I can't wait to hear our little ones' questions and comments about the book and about our country.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great buta little disappointed By AZ Cowpoke Love the song but thought the book was more than just the lyrics of the song after seeing an interview with Lee Greenwood. The message is true blue and should be shared with your young ones. I just thought the book was more and it isn't.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Patriotic, colorful and informative - a great gift for any family with children. By Jeremy P. Westby I admire Greenwood's commitment to our country and consistent support of our veterans. We need to remember. We must remember. The book is an important illustration and tells a story of what makes our country so great.

Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by English writer Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel. One of the most praised things about Three Men in a Boat is how undated it appears to modern readers – the jokes seem fresh and witty even today. The three men are based on Jerome himself and two real-life friends, George Wingrave (who would become a senior manager at Barclays Bank) and Carl Hentschel (the founder of a London printing business, called Harris in the book), with whom J. often took boating trips. The dog, Montmorency, is entirely fictional but, "as Jerome admits, developed out of that area of inner consciousness which, in all Englishmen, contains an element of the dog." The trip is a typical boating holiday of the time in a Thames camping skiff. This was just after commercial boat traffic on the Upper Thames had died out, replaced by the 1880s craze for boating as a leisure activity.

Three Men in a Boat, by Jerome K. Jerome

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Jerome's classic British comedy is recounted by House's Hugh Laurie in a marvelously entertaining performance that will bring listeners to the banks of the Thames and carry them away into a world where three men and a dog named Montmorency venture from London to Oxford one sunny day. At just two and a half hours, the journey is short but sweet as Laurie captures the essence of Jerome's touching tale. With his classic witty tone, Laurie dives headfirst into each character, offering his own take on each colorful personality. There is a subtle theatrical aspect at work here as Laurie delivers a knockout one-man show that displays his wide-ranging talent. (Aug.) Review "I "highly recommend" Campfire's comics. They do what they are intended to do and do it in a way that excites kids about classic literature." --Chris Wilson, The Graphic Classroom (a resource for teachers and librarians)

It has turned out to be one the best gifts I've ever received. Jerome's witty ramblings are the funniest I've ever read. Mark Twain, who I also love to read, comes close to Jerome's style but, in my opinion, is a poor second. Jerome finds humor in the commonplace and the every day occurrences which all of us, even a good 100 years later, can identify with. Starting with his self-diagnosis of every ailment, excepting house-maid's knee, to his singular insights into his friends, self, and surroundings; I never tire of rereading this book. It becomes clear quickly that the dog, Montmorency, is the only one with any sense. Three Men and a Boat always cheers me after a cold, bleak winter. It's the best Spring tonic--I highly recommend an annual dose. I shop now for gifts to give to friends so they can share my enjoyment in this wonderfully humorous and offbeat book. Read, enjoy, and laugh often.

94 of 98 people found the following review helpful. To say nothing of the dog! By E. A Solinas Imagine Bertie Wooster and two of his idiot friends out on a boat... with no Jeeves. That about describes "Three Men in a Boat : To Say Nothing of the Dog," Jerome K. Jerome's enchanting comic novel about three young men (to say nothing of the dog) who discover the "joys" of roughing it.The three men are George, Harris and the narrator, who are all massive hypochiandriacs -- they find that they have symptoms of every disease in existance (except housemaid's knee). To prop up their failing health, they decide to take a cruise down the Thames in a rented boat, camping and enjoying nature's bounty.Along with Monty -- an angelic-looking, devilish terrier -- the three friends set off down the river. But they find that not everything is as easy as they expected. They get lost in hedge mazes, end up going downstream without a paddle, encounter monstrous cats and vicious swans, have picnics navigate locks, offend German professors, and generally get into every kind of trouble they possibly can...Even though it was published more than a century ago, "Three Men in a Boat" remains as freshly humorous as when it was first published. While editor/playwright/author Jerome K. Jerome wrote a lot of other books, this book remains his most famous. And once you've read it, you'll see why.Jerome's real talent is in finding humor in everyday things, like trying to erect a tent in the woods, getting seasick, or questioning whether it's safe to drink river water. Written in Jerome's dry, goofy prose, these little occurrances become immensely funny. One of the funniest parts of the book is when the boys listen to a fishermen telling of his prowess, only to accidently knock down his record-breaking stuffed fish.... and discover it's made out of plaster. Oops. But Jerome takes a break from the humor near the end, when the boys find a drowned woman floating in the river. And here he becomes solemn and quietly compassionate: "She had sinned - some of us do now and then - and her family and friends, naturally shocked and indignant, had closed their doors against her."But back on the funny stuff. The capstone on all this humor is the "three men." These guys are basically pampered Victorian aristocrats, who have a romantic yearning for the great outdoors. You'll be laughing at them and with them, as they struggle through the basics of boating and camping. It's worth noting that the Digireads edition of this book is very good, with a flexible cover, extremely strong binding, and a nice reproduction with rather small print. Think "Dover Thrift," but of higher quality.Funny, wacky and creepily true to life, "Three Men in a Boat" is an enduring comic classic in the vein of PG Wodehouse. Not to mention the dog!

61 of 62 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book, horrible edition...make sure you sample first By James A. Johnson I want to be clear; this is specifically for the Kindle edition of this book. The actual content, the book itself, would get five stars. It's a great book, huge fun to read, shockingly undated given its age, and I could not have asked for more entertainment once I read it.I did not, however, manage to finish the book in this Kindle edition. This is perhaps the 25th book or so I have read in this format, and I have grown sadly used to the number of typographical errors and layout problems that lace the majority of the works, but this one I couldn't get through. There are hard returns throughout the book that presumably mark the end of the original line in the text. Unfortunately, they do not correspond to the end of the lines on the Kindle's screen, regardless of the text size, so literally every other line on the screen is one two three words long. It was too disconcerting to get used to, and finally I went through the trouble of downloading a public domain copy from Gutenberg and transferring that over to my Kindle.Maybe I am oversensitive to this problem, but do yourself a favor and look at the sample of the book before you purchase it. If I had done so I never would have bought it, regardless of the price. 5 stars for the content; 1 star for the edition.

Outstanding artwork by Julius Czotonyi, who is the premier plaeo-artist at this time. Accompanying this beautiful artwork, is the astute, insightful and easily grasped text by Brian Switek, who is beloved for his many writings on dinosaur and prehistoric topics for readers of all ages. I do have children, but honestly, I bought this book as an adult for myself - yes, it is THAT good.

Hard to miss with the art of Julius Csotonyi. My onlu gripe is that Allosaur gets cut off for text ane we miss this great piece in its full effect: http://csotonyi.com/galleries/mesozoic-era/jurassic-period/#!enviragallery1398-7I also wish some of the other creatures in the art were identified. This book is meant for younger audiences but all ages will enjoy it.

Nice big print, too, unlike the other books with Csotonyi's work. Exciting and colorful layout. This would be a great book for people who are not yet totally die-hard dino fans and just want to dip their toes in paleontology. Everything is explained, but not at endless, perhaps overwhelming depth. Stunning cover, too.
